Angele Bassett to Direct Whitney Biopic

“American Horror Story: Coven” actress Angela Bassett is set to direct Lifetime’s upcoming filmography on the life of late pop singer Whitney Houston.

With a simple working title of “Whitney Houston,” the film is set for a 2015 debut and will reportedly tackle the years Houston was married to fellow R&B singer Bobby Brown.

In a released stament, Bassets said she has “great regard for both singers” and is “beyond excited to go behind the camera and into their world.”

The race to bring Whitney’s life to the big/small screen has been relentless since the singer passed away prematurely in 2012. Actress Meagan Good expressed interest in portraying Whitney, as did Vivica Fox, who has had her name attached to a Whitney biopic for well over a decade. Longtime mentor Clive Davis was also reported to be in talks to tell Whitney’s life story.

No casting has been announced for the film, but I wait with bated breath to see who will be chosen to bring one of music’s biggest icon’s to life.

  1. Love Angela Bassett (best actress ever), love Whitney so I’ll check this out. And yea, finding the right actress is crucial for this role.

  2. Can’t wait! This should be interesting and so much to gain for Angela Bassett as a director, someone who knew and worked with her, how ideal, knowing the pressures of the entertainment industry, telling the truth, but without sensationalizing (I hope not) her riveting and tragic rise to stardom and her transition as a most beloved one-of-a-kind superstar, powerhouse singer and generous human being (people will learn things they didn’t know)! May God bless this production in every aspect!

  3. Great! I have a confident feeling that Whitney and Aaliyah’s biopics are in good hands

  4. At one time Vivica Fox would have been so perfect for this role.

Casting will make or break this film. Hope they get it right.

FYI, Nicole Ari Parker has also has her name floated around as a possible lead in Whitney’s bio. Not sure how I feel about that. I know Nicole can pull it off, she’s a great actress. But looks wise, I wanted someone who looked more like Whitney.

  5. I think we all will cringe a bit with seeing anyone portray Whitney, I know I will. I sincerely hope that the woman they choose resembles Whitney somewhat, particularly complexion wise. I vote for JHUD; a great actress, a true singer (all though she will lip-synch) and Whitney loved her. JHUD has went through her own trials and tribulations, and JHUD has grace and dignity even in the most horrendous situations.

Maybe even Tika Sumpter or Kerry Washington, but absolutely not to Nicole Ari Parker, Meagan Good, Beyoncé or Zoe Saldana, because if someone thought of Zoe for Nina Simone, Hollywood is crazy enough to cast her. BTW, I do love those actresses just not for WHITNEY!

  6. I have to say this is one of those movies that’s going to pull on your heart strings. I have to agree @ Kim that Jennifer Hudson would be the best person to play Whitney!
Jennifer is not only an amazing singer but actress the emotion she exudes on the big screen is amazing.
It can’t just be any person playing Whitney hands down. I can’t wait to see what they come up with.

  7. Whitney Houston is my all time favorite from a child! But I am going against the grain on this one. I would like them to cast someone unknown and phenomenal to play this role that will knock your socks off the way Jennifer Hudson came along in Dream Girls. Just because you are in the spot light doesn’t automatically make you the best in the world! This would be an excellent opportunity for an unknown!
