Anika Noni Rose Heads Back To Broadway

Anika Noni Rose Tony Award winning actress Anika Noni Rose, who is probably best known for her role as Lorrell in the hit movie Dreamgirls, has landed the lead role in a Broadway classic her fellow Dreamgirl, Beyonce, was once in talks to star in herself. As you all remember, I posted an article here some months ago about an all Black cast being used in the revival of “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof”. At the time it was reported that the producers wanted a big name Black female star to play the role of Maggie The Cat, and thus Audra McDonald, an acclaimed Black Broadway actress was booted in favor of Beyonce. LL Cool J was also said to be taking on the role of Brick, but neither of those casting choices worked out because Playbill has officially announced that Anika and Terrence Howard will be playing the roles of Maggie and Brick.

Joining the pair will be James Earl Jones as Big Daddy and Phylicia Rashaad as Big Mama. The play is being directed by Phylicia’s sister, Debbie Allen and tickets for the production go on sale December 29th.

  1. I never heard of this play, but I will probably take the trip to the NYC because it sounds like a great cast.

 Great for Anika!!! She is so under rated.

  2. That good she was good in dreamgirls. If the play come to my town i would go see it.

  3. Thank GOD!!! If would have to see Bey and LL on stage there is no way I would be able to hold my laughter!

Anika is a great actress to play Maggie and Terrance as Brick will be great! Liz Taylor and Paul Newman would be proud! I can’t wait to see it!

  4. Oh yes, I love Broadway Plays. I will be hoppin’ on the Amtrak train to go see this play when it comes out. Its the truest form of performing arts. You HAVE TO HAVE TALENT to be on Broadway. It’s not a game.

  5. I love Anika, she is good at what she does and she is not caught up in the mix like other actresses that i will not mention.

do your thing then Anika :dance1:

  6. YOU GUYS NEED TO STOP THINKING THAT BECAUSE BEYONCE SOLD $100,000,000(AS HER DADDY WOULD SAY) MILLION RECORDS THAT SHE WILL GET ANY PART IN A MOVIE OR BROADWAY PLAY…THESE PRODUCERS WORK JUST LIKE THE OSCARS PRODUCERS (SHOW ME THE ACTING)…

JENNIFER HUDSON RIGHT NOW IS THE HOTTEST TICKET FOR MOVIES AND BROADWAY PLAYS.

BEYONCE IS THE HOTTEST TICKET FOR MUSIC..

AND IF I HAVE TO PLACE A BET ON WHICH ONE OF THESE LADIES WOULD RECEIVE.. ONE OSCAR, ONE GRAMMY AND ONE TONY..I WOULD PUT ALL MY MONEY ON JENNIFER HUDSON……

  7. Thank goodness. Anika is just right for the part because she is already a Tony award winning actress. Plus, I felt that she was the forgotten Dreamgirl during the movie promotions and during the awards ceremony.

Beyonce is a good performer but she is just not a very good actress. Just like Audra McDonald said before “Broadway is a totally different beast that Beyonce was not ready for.” I also think that Beyonce only wanted to grab this part because she is on a quest to be the first African American woman to win a Grammy, Tony and Oscar. If I am not mistaken, hasn’t that already been done by Whoopi Goldberg? Maybe somebody needs to inform Ms. Knowles so that she can stop making these comments. Even if she had gotten the part, it doesn’t mean that she would be guaranteed a Tony award. It doesn’t work like that. It just seems like Beyonce has motives and not the passion to be an actress.

But, congratulations to Anika. She is going to be the voice of a black princess in an up coming Disney movie and now has landed a role in her first love, the theatre.

  8. Sometimes Hollywood’s BEST fail at Broadway (in reference to Beyonce having been considered for the role initially and her desire to have an Oscar, Tony & Grammy), but there’s nothing wrong with dreaming. 🙂

Congrats to Anika!!!!!!!!!!! She’s a spitfire! I loved her in Dreamgirls. I wish I could ‘see’ this play. It’s one of Tennessee William’s (American’s Willam Shakespeare) finest! Good luck to her and the entire cast. Maybe they’ll release it to dvd as I’m quite sure I won’t be able to make it to the theater. Also, rent the movie if you’re unfamiliar with the play. Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor star and it’s two great performances by those famed actors. :brownsista:

  9. Anika is under-rated as an actress. I loved her in DreamGirls, with that being said I always root for the “underdog.” I wish Anika all the success and hope to see her in upcoming future roles.

  10. None of you give flies about Anika. Youa re only happy Beyonce didn’t get the role 🙄

  11.
None of you give flies about Anika. Youa re only happy Beyonce didn’t get the role
LOL. You are so right. I lost respect for Beyonce during the whole Dreamgirls drama. She acted just like a spoiled child. This is proof that Beyonce’s star is only bright in the music world.

  12. Actually i tougth beyonce should have get the part because that would have been an early fall for her since she over-estimate herself in everything but oh well lets nonobste this whole anger for beyonce’s buttpad and move on

i’m sooooooo happy for anika she was great in dreamgirls but at that time people were more concentrated on j.hud for showing who we know what a real singer is i know anika’s performance was appreciated by many but j.hud voice the one that made barbie look dumb as hell won the heart of many she gave a voice to all of them people that are proponent of true musique but still everyone you meet will tell you anika was good and i know she will shine in the play and i can’ t’ wait to see it

  13. anika and jhud both were amazing in dreamgirls they transmet the emotion of their character to you nd that’s what a real actress is supposed to do i know she’ll do great

  14. Anika Rose and Terrance Howard are both excellent choices  Anika did a very good job in Dream girls and she has a very good voice. Terrance Howard is also an excellent actor and I always look forward to seeing him perform  . I am glad Anika stayed away from the whole Dream girl’s drama. Drama can and will hurt your career as we can see what it has done to you know who by using a poor choice in words and comments. She may be still loved by some but Beyonce lost a lot of fans and respect behind the whole Dream girl’s drama. Jennifer. Hudson did an excellent job with handling the media’s drama and staying clear of interview pitfalls.

  15. I love Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman!! The movie was awesome. They had some great lines in the movie – Tennessee Williams is also one of my favorite playwrites.
I think they cast the perfect ones – it is surely to be real steamy and emotional performances by both of the leads.

  16. I most definitely :iagree: on that Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman they were great and the supporting cast as well.I know they show Cat on the Hot tin roof on Tuner Classic Movie Channel if you guys get a chance check it out it’s a great movie

  17. Good for Anika. But Terrence Howard being in it is a turnoff. I don’t like Slickback very much.

  18. I like the movie and hopefully I’ll get a chance to see the play. Wasn’t Halle Berry going for the role of Magaret/Maggie?

  19. I think Beyonce didn’t get this role because she isn’t percieved as smart, so much as sexy…the main character is a very smart woman, she isn’t just using her sexuality, she’s quite emotionally intelligent… She doesn’t need him, IMO so much as WANT him….
Of course it’s a great play and I’m sure they gave the roles to Anika and Terrence because they wanted really, truly gifted talents to play the parts (although Terrence does come across as phony at times…his speaking voice is obviously contrived…it might work for him, though as his character lacks an authentic self) I would love to see this play, anywhoooo…I can’t say I would have rushed out to see Beyonce and LL…In fact, it’s quite funny, the thought…

  20. Beyonce and LL didn’t get the roles because neither can act well enough to pull of these roles. Anika has won a Tony for her Broadway work so I think it is safe to say she knows what she is doing, and we all know Terrenace has act his arse off. The casting of the play is brilliant and the use of Beyonce or LL would have made it a joke.
