Ashanti Tackles Chaka Khan’s ‘Sweet Thing’

ASHANTI OFF THE RECORD PERFORMANCE

Ashanti celebrated the top 10 debut of her “Braveheart” album by stopping by AOL’s New York studio to perform a selection of her biggest hits, including “Foolish,” her latest, “I Got It,” and Chaka Khan’s timeless classic “Sweet Thing.”

According to Ashanti, despite her decade long career, many in the public are still unaware of her vocal abilities, and often throw jabs at her via social media.

Not one to Twitter beef, Ashanti says she answers her critics by proving them wrong.

Check her out below tacking the classic everyone from Whitney Houston to Mary J. Blige has attempted to put their stamp on.

  1. She sounds decent, but she is not a strong enough vocalist to pull off Chaka, Whitney, or even Mary. Good luck to her, though.

  2. I never understood why people would say Ashanti can’t sing when she sounds exactly like her music.

This was a great tribute! Good job Ashanti!

    Love the new album also!

  3. OMG!!! BRAVEHEART CD! ! IS AWESOME! !! GREAT JOB ASHANTI! PROUD OF THIS BROWN SISTA!! “SCARS ” SHOULD HAVE BEEN HER NUMBER ONE SINGLE. THAT SONG SCARS…IS NOTHIBG BUT THE TRUTH! GODSPEED!

  4. She could have been a lil more soulful. But yeah, Ashanti is a true singer. No autotune or tricks needed at all.

  5. @Sista I agree, at the beginning she sound perfect but I was missing that soul swag that makes this song sassy and classic. I like Ashanti’s voice but I think she falls short when she goes up too high. I think that should be saved for those for short climaxes that would showcase that she has a little range. Although she can hit those notes when she holds them too long it seems like she is straining and than I don’t want to hear the rest cause I am cringing. I think she need to pull from all her strength and find that happy medium. Anytime a singers mouth is opened that wide, she is doing too much.

  6. I thought you did a pretty good job with this cover. I think when people compare her voice to other singers then they say that she fall short. But why and that’s okay. The sweetness of her voice is her signature sound not appreciate her voice for what it is. She has more of a honey tone as opposed to a soulful sound
The sweetness of her voice is her signature sound. Every singer has one
    #BRAVEHEART = great album IMO

  7. I like Ashanti’s voice, and this cover was ok. Nobody has come close to Chaka, though

  8. Now, I definitely love Ashanti, she is a class act and always stays above the fray. She did a good job singing all her songs live, particularly her new ones. She has a sweet voice, her vocals are light but powerful. Her voice carries great melody, but she still needs to master a mid range that evokes soul. Nonetheless, I have always LOVED the sound of her voice. It`s unique, and solely hers.

It`s wonderful that her new album is a hit, seeming she worked sooo hard to release it to her fans… I wish Ashanti all the best in everything she does…Sista, thanks for always posting on Ashanti.

BTW, Ashanti looked fabulous in the mini-concert.

  9. Ashanti shows us yet again what an amazing singer she is props to Ashanti job well done!
