Aunt Viv is Still Upset

I’m not completely sure I believe this story but I am choosing to post it anyway.

TMZ, the first news source to report the death of Michael Jackson, and a website not known for making up lies, is reporting this morning that Janet Hubert, the original Aunt Vivian from “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air,” referred to Will Smith as an asshole during a recent interview.

For those of you not in the know, Janet says Will had her fired from the show because she would not kiss his butt. She also said Will didn’t think it realistic that a dark skin black woman could actually be living the life Janet portrayed on the show. According to Hubert, the role originally called for a light skin black woman with green eyes- which happens to be what her replacement, Daphne Maxwell Reid, looked like.

At any point, with news of a possible “Fresh Prince” reunion being in the works, Janet was asked if she would be willing to participate. It was reportedly at this point that Aunt Viv had this to say about Big Willy: “There will never be a reunion … as I will never do anything with an asshole like Will Smith. He is still an egomaniac and has not grown up. This constant reunion thing will never ever happen in my lifetime unless there is an apology, which he doesn’t know the word.”

Had this been reported a decade ago I may have believed it. However, Janet has said several times that she is over “that whole situation” and has since moved on with her life, appearing on several TV shows and making a return to her Broadway roots.

Having said that, I personally doubt an invitation would be extended to Janet if there was a reunion, or that she would accept it if there was. Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Carlton on the show, has also continued to make his feelings about his TV mom known over the years… and they are not very nice.

  1. I also read this on Huffington Post this morning. I remember a few years back her railing against Will and the cast of Fresh Prince.

Honestly, whatever happened, happened, and I’m sorry she never got the recognition she felt she deserved.

If she is really, truly still upset about the matter, she is only hurting herself. The show ended almost 20 years ago. Let bygones be bygones. Life is too short for that much anger.

If she is over it like the article indicates, the media needs to leave it alone and stop rehashing painful memories from the past.

Also the whole dark-skinned vs. light skinned Aunt Viv is tired. Stop it. Honestly, it’s the media that keep perpetuating this difference among African Americans. Both women were excellent Aunt Vivians and true fans of the show saw Aunt Viv for who she was — an intelligent, beautiful, hardworking and encouraging backbone of the Banks family — not the skin color of the actresses portraying the character.

  2. Nicely put Ella.

I also heard a while ago that Janet, along with JoMarie Payton (actress who played Harriet on Family Matters) wanted more to do with the show i.e. executive produce etc that’s also why they left (could of been a lie maybe they just didn’t want their business out?) But I’m not gonna lie the show/s didn’t seem the same without them.

  3. I believe they both had an hand in the fiasco, but people love to tell a story that makes them look better…

  4. I wouldn’t be surprised. A year or two ago she did one of those Life after type shows and she seemed bitter about it then, even after all this time. I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. Maybe he was acting like a big start and wanted repect and she treated him like who are you. She probably was thinking she is a veteran and tried to teach him something and he wasn’t listening.

  5. Sorry..*star..*respect..I really need to practice on my Mavis Beacon Typing Tutor..LOL

  6. When you don’t let go… people still have the power over you….SISTA LET IT GO!!! ITS INSANE!! 20-15 years ago. I cannot believe a person her age is still tripping. I will be praying for you.

  7. Obviously this experience has left her very bitter and has undoubtedly held her back from finding closure. Anyone who has lived a little knows that getting over things is a lot easier said than done. Instead of pointing the finger she needs to look at herself on how she can remove that pain from her life and forgive. Its hard just getting over regular shit in life. This woman had lost her whole career. Her resentment is giving Will so much power in her life and he aint even thinking about her. I feel sorry for her.
