Back In The Day: Jade “One Woman” Performance

Here is a video I recently found on You Tube of my second favorite girl group of the nineties: Jade. The group consisted of Tonya Kelly, Joi Marshall, and Di Reed. During their brief yet successful career, Jade released two full albums, one exclusive live album, and had a string of popular R&B hits. Here they are above performing their single “One Woman” on BET’s Video Soul back in 1992.

Wanna know what happened to this once mighty group? Read an interview with Joi Marshall here and an interview Diva Planet did with Tonya Kelly here.

  1. Iremember them- used to love their braids. They were having a great career and then they just vanished. I would love to see them reunite to perform agaib. I heard they were at make-up artist Chris Maldanado’s funeral. He died with Aaliyah and they had worked with him on several of their video and magazine shoots.

  2. Oh my goodness. I remember this group. “Don’t Walk Away” and “Mr. Do Right”. Man, I miss the days of good feel good music that you could connect with. The days when radio had a variety of artist that dominated the airwaves.

By the way, what happen to the girl groups and female rap artist. The music industry has really gone to the dogs.

  3. Can you guys believe that for the first time in nearly 50 years there is not one Black girl group on the music scene? That is just how bad the world of RnB music is. Black music in particular has gone to the dogs and that is so sad. When oh when will we have another talented girl group to adore? Destiny’s Child was a piss poor choice for those of us who grew EnVogue, BrownStone, and Jade.

  4. I’ve never even heard of them of this song. But then again…why would I? The girl groups I grew with were TLC and Destiny’s Child. Mostly Destiny’s Child.

  5. Damn Majesa I feel sorry for you πŸ™

TLC however were out when Jade was out so how did you end up growing up on TLC but missing Jade?

  6. That’s my song!!! Dana, I kinda feel you. Black music has gone to the dogs, it’s really sad. It’s nothing more than catchy hooks and rump shaking. How ever, as far as groups go….I think groups altogether have just faded out. Destiny’s child was alright, but I’m with you, I grew up on Envogue, Brownstone, SWV etc. AAaaah the good ole Days.

  7. I loved “One Woman” so much when I was 15.What a coincidence! I just bought Jade’s second album from a used record store yesterday.

  8. I remember seeing Jade when they were on a promotion tour with SWV at a local club in Dallas back in the early ninties. Kelly was so beautiful and pleasant and that smile, that smile could like up any room. They were great especially in concert. I hate Giant Records went under like it did. I thought Cassandra Mills, sister of Stephanie was doing a great job. She had other acts that seemed like they were on their way. I saw Di singing background at one of Usher’s concert a few years back. I wish them all the best of luck. Especially….Kelly.

  9. I totally agree with Dana about girl groups in the nineties…..this song just brings that whole era back to me. I am going to dig through my old albums now I might even find some Anita Baker(now thats music)!

  10. 5-4-3-2-Yo! Time is Up! πŸ˜† I never bought the full length albums. Back then, buying ‘singles’ was what I did and I bought a number of them for Jade. Yes, those girls were talented singers. Thanks for the throwback! We love it! Mmmmhmmm. πŸ™‚

  11. @Shell, Anita Baker now that’s what’s up.

I remember this song also and used to really like it. It just brings back more good memories.

  12. Yea, this was a fun era (to me). I remember those combat boots and had a pair. LOL.

I wonder if they’ll ever do a “comeback”? That would be sweet!!! πŸ™‚

  13. I used to love Jade and Brownstone. You should do a throw back of X-cape Now those sistas can sing!

  14. I miss the ’90s!!!!!!!!!!! X-Scape, Jade, En Vogue, Brownstone, SWV, Groove Theory, the list could go on and on!

  15. “i’m your one and only i’m only one woman baby”

    Loove it! remenber 1000 words?

  16. RnB in general has been fading for years and almost came to an end when Hip-Hop was on the rise. Luther and Anita (80’s RnB) has always appealed to the older audience so in order for RnB to appeal to young folks, they had to intertwine with Hip-Hop which was the birthplace of the “New Jack Swing” Era that Jade, TLC, Guy(the catalyst), Boyz II Men etc. were all apart of which we all Teddy Riley created it lol. Even today you have RnB artist that collaborate with hip-hop artist to be relevant in music. RnB is not true RnB anymore. That faded in 80’s. We just have Hip-Hop and RnB. As for girl groups, I grew up with EnVogue, Jade, TLC, Brownstone, Xscape, SWV, etc. Destiny’s Child was just a group to spark Beyonce’s solo career whether you want to believe it or not it was lol. I never really looked at Destiny’s Child has a group because Beyonce sang every single verse where as some of the girl groups gave every member a chance to sing, so you can identify with their voices and personality. I like some of Destiny’s Child’s music but to me they weren’t legends though but to each it’s own right? lol

  17. The only one I can think of right now is Cherish, danity kane is more pop oriented…however neither is on the lvel of the groups before them…but give it some time.
