Back In The Day: The Bold, The Black, The Beautiful

Way back in the day, 1991 to be exact, Robert Townsend hosted his own HBO sketch comedy series and actresses, Stephanie E. Williams (The Yong & The Restless) and Ann-Marie Johnson (In The Heat Of The Night) were regular cast members. One of my favorite features from that show was the soap opera parody “The Bold, The Black, and the Beautiful. Ann-Marie played Chandelier Arrington, Stepanie played Candy Jones, and their fight over the Mexican gardener is now legendary (lol) .

  1. Oh my damn that brought back memories 😆 Ann Marie was a bad chick and Stepanie was pretty as hell. If I remember correctly she was dating Robert at the time. She was also the first Black woman to play on The Young and The Restless. She was a beautiful Brown Sista and you just don’t see Black women who look like her on television anymore. All the Black women today are mixed or not Black at all.

  2. Wow. Thanks so much for that clip! I love Robert Townsend’s stuff. I have ‘Hollywood Shuffle’ (classic) and watch it from time to time. I’ve seen some of the scenes from his ‘Partners in Crime’ series; I’ll have to check out the others. 🙂

  3. Times have sure changed…

    Cree you are so right.

    Thanks for this Steph.

  4. It’s nice to see naturally beautiful black women. No weaves or colored lenses just beauty. This was funny too.

  5. This is in my top 5 all time fav comedy sketches. Ann-Marie is the best actress on the planet! She rocked drama (In the Heat of the Night) and comedy (I’m Gonna Get You Sucka) better than any actress I’ve seen. She is under rated.

Are there any Ms. Benita sketches ala In Living Color in cyberspace?

  6. I guess I’m too young because I had never seen or heard of that show before, but that was too funny. It gave me a nice little boost on this boring Monday morning.

  7. I remember seeing Stephanie Williams when I was a teen and thinking she was so beautiful. Thanks for posting.

  8. I agree pearlsrevealed. Ann-Marie is an amazingly talented yet underrated actress. She worked on a lot of Robert Townsend’s films and she always transitioned from comedy to drama so easily. Right now she is playing a crazy designer on That’s So Raven and amazingly she still looks the same as she did almost 20 years ago.

  9. That was funny! “$50 dollars?, you can kiss yo a** goodbye”

  10. This brings back alot of memories for me. Robert Townsend kept black people employed back in the day just like Tyler Perry is doing now. To this day my sister and I quote parts from Hollywood Shuffle.

  11. Darn! I am too young to have seen this show. I remember watching the Five Heartbeats though…

  12. I’m going to have to google her or something. Who did she play on Y&R?

    I’ve been watching for years…
