‘Mary Jane’ to Debut at Film Fest

The one hour pilot for BET’s upcoming original series “Being Mary Jane” starring Gabrielle Union and Tika Sumpter is set to make its debut on the opening night of the Urbanworld Film Festival, being held from September 19th thru the 23rd.

The film was written by “Girlfriends” and “The Game” creator Mara Brock Akil and directed by her husband Salim Akil. The power couple are also the driving force behind such films as “Jumping the Broom” and most recently “Sparkle.”

Originally titled “Single Black Female,” “Being Mary Jane” is about the life of an Atlanta television anchor who attempts to juggle the demands of a successful career and fledgling love life.

The highly anticipated show is set to make its official debut in the fall of 2013 and will feature the oh-so-fine Omari Hardwick as one of Mary Jane’s (Gabrielle) suitors.

As for the Urbanworld Film Festival, it is being held in New York and is worth checking out if you happen to be in the city.

  1. Go Gabby, another “girl on fire” and seems ageless! She makes good career moves and the “Bring it On” film makes her recognizable to new generations of fans and consumers. Her past Neutrogena ads were also quite beneficial. She has remained in the public’s eye in a Hollywood that doesn’t cater to black actresses! Applause!

  2. white america isn’t interested in seeing black women in film with BLACK love interests…
