Essence submitted the singer’s piece and it won in the arts and entertainment category. However, because this is Beyonce, you know drama can’t be far behind.
Fending off accusations that Beyonce’s win undermines the value and credibility of the honor, president of the New York chapter, Michael Fenney, said Knowles’ article “won fair and square” and that he believes the win was based on writing and content, not the singer’s celebrity status.
Cori Murray, entertainment editor for Essence, also chimed in, saying “Beyonce is a real writer. We had to edit her, but everyone gets edited, except for Toni Morrison of course.”
