BEYONCE HONORED FOR ESSENCE MAGAZINE ARTICLE 181x250 Beyonce Honored

As reported earlier this week, Beyonce Knowles was honored by the New York Association of Black Journalists for “Eat, Play, Love,” an editorial she penned for Essence Magazine about her nine month hiatus from the music industry.

Essence submitted the singer’s piece and it won in the arts and entertainment category. However, because this is Beyonce, you know drama can’t be far behind.

Fending off accusations that Beyonce’s win undermines the value and credibility of the honor, president of the New York chapter, Michael Fenney, said Knowles’ article “won fair and square” and that he believes the win was based on writing and content, not the singer’s celebrity status.

Cori Murray, entertainment editor for Essence, also chimed in, saying “Beyonce is a real writer. We had to edit her, but everyone gets edited, except for Toni Morrison of course.”

Controversy aside, Beyonce took time out of her busy schedule to thank the NYABJ via video. Check it out below.

  1. Congrats to Beyonce. I read the article and it was very nice.

  2. yes girl!

  3. This is just becoming too much. I mean come a lady that can barely speak has now won a journalism award. I am all for go head sister do you but this is becoming ridiculous with her.

  4. I didn’t want to say anything in my article, but knowing the entertainment industry as I do, I think it is plain to see that both the People Most Beautiful cover and this award are staged. And before ppl get mad, let me give you another example. Ever notice when a celebrity has a movie, album, ext coming out, they start getting things like Walk of Fame inductions? I see that one a lot as a matter of fact. These are things designed to bring attention to the celebrity and whatever they are promoting. Same thing with Beyonce. She has been MIA from the game for months now and all of sudden with her return to performing right around the corner, all these honors start coming outta nowhere. It’s a part of the business- the promo. Expect a few more things to happen in the next week or two. I smell a Nobel Prize nomination coming on LOL.

  5. I agree with you SISTA it is just like come on enough already.

  6. Here we go again, Beyonce wins something and it is just for PR purposes or it’s staged to make her look good. Those shows have been sold out for a month now so I don’t know what this award and People picking her to be their most beautiful have to do with anything. And it doesn’t take much to get a Walk of Fame. You have to pay for it which is why so many people have them. Studios usually pay for them on behalf of the actor!

Congrats to Bey on another honor.

  7. @Bria
She can barely speak? Just because she isn’t super intelligent, doesn’t mean a thing. Beyonce has admitted that she doesn’t articulate as well as others. You are really over dramatizing her lack of perfect diction. Their are plenty of celebrities who aren’t the smartest people in the world and most of them are sitting on the Forbes list with eight figures beside their names.

    @Sista
People wanted to be the first magazine to get an interview Post Baby so I believe that they desperately wanted her on the cover. Also, this award situation. Like you said, ESSENCE submitted this. I don’t think Beyonce cares much about some journalist award that people haven’t really heard of.

Lastly, I think it’s disgusting that people tear this woman down about everything. I am a Beyonce fan, yes, but that has nothing to do with me defending her. Everytime this woman accomplishes something, from a magazine cover to a Soul Train Music Award; she must to have paid for it, they just gave it to her because she’s Beyonce or her father bribed someone to give her that award. It’s been going on since the early 2000′s when Destiny Child started to get really popular. People would say anything to discredit this woman. Every year when People magazine’s MB comes out and it’s a white woman, I see many black people groan and wine about the lack of color on the list. When a black woman get’s the cover, black people still groan and wine because it’s Beyonce or that the woman isn’t dark skinned with black hair.

At the end of the day this woman is winning and will continue win while people continue to tear her down and from the look on her face; she isn’t bothered by it.

  8. Well Sista,
No matter how stage you think Beyonce’s honors are, including The Most Beautiful Woman In The World and The New York Association for Black Journalists Award, the honorers believe that Beyonce G. Knowles wins and deserves them. Therefore, the time and the place the honorers decide to give the honors to the honoree are up to them. I love it all, and congratulations to King B.

  9. @LMAO

Perfectly stated. People’s editor was on TV stating that she was the ONLY choice that they even considered this year. It has nothing to do with who is literally the most beautiful, it has to do with picking someone who has had a big year or some sort of impact on pop culture. A couple of years ago, they picked Christian Applegate simply because she had beat her cancer and they picked JLO last year because of her huge comeback with AI.

As you stated, Essence submitted the piece so I’m not quite sure why she’s the one being attacked or why she’s being accused of staging this award to garner publicity for her sold out shows.

Do I think there are times when she gets awards cause of who she is? Absolutely! However, that goes for every popular artist at the moment. You have pop singers winning r&b awards because of who they are or winning vocal awards because of their names. I doubt any of them are spending their hard earned money purchasing awards, especially when they have multiples of the same award!

  10. How do you know Beyonce deserved these honors, especially the journalism award? Do you know who the other nominees were? Did you read their submissions as well?

No hate at all. Just asking a real question.

  11. @Caren

How do you know she didn’t?

  12. I never said she was undeserving, so there is no need to ask me that question.

  13. I don’t know…what all to say so I’ll congrats and keep it moving. @SISTA, Nobel Peace Prize? C’mon son! LOL NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

  14. @ Kanyade, How goes it? You and me were some of the original commentors from like 2007!
@Sista, yes whenever someone is about to “come back” so to speak, you tend to see alot of them… a whole whole lot :-)

  15. Hi Liyah! :) hope u r well.

  16. I agree with everyone’s comments but at the same time, it’s like if they can do it for white celebrities, then they can do it for African American celebrities as well. We are constantly saying that we have to work so much harder for this and that. Well hey, if they want to give it to her… so be it. Another accomplishment whether earned or not. Congrats to Beyonce!

  17. People shouldn’t get upset when people don’t think this award and possibly others are without merit. I think the NABJ wanted to blow up their spotlight and they did! Essence knew what the response would be, so why not?

This is just another promotional tool for Beyonce and something for wikipedia. I’m never one to say what a person deserves or not, but I could never congratulate this particular award. My own personal feelings. I know too many artists, struggling writers, I find this an insult, for real! But, I don’t blame Beyonce in the least bit, but the NABJ, an organization that I always respected until now!

When Jay-Z and 50 cent kill the New York Times Best Sellers list, I have no problem, actually I cheer! When celebrity bloggers, step in and blog, I love it! When celebrities write books with a professional writer, no problem, they’re trying to tell story and often this is beneficial to many! I love books and the written word! If I thought this was a powerful and compelling piece, I would bow down, even if I didn’t believe Beyonce wrote it all by herself. The open letter or blog Tameka Raymond wrote, if she wrote it was very good, but not worthy of NABJ award for fine journalism. Gabrielle Union wrote a wonderful blog about her insecurities for global grind and that was really good, but not great. I’m sure if Lady Gaga and Jill Scott wrote an magazine article, I would love it, but to win a journalism award, it would have to be moving and riveting!

Singers and actors replaced super models for magazine covers and editorial, cosmetic contracts, spokesperson endorsements, etc., now singers and actors are in stiff competition with reality tv stars like Kim K. and others. So look for more of these bogus moves, it’s just the times we live, everyone wins, at the expense of “integrity”…the soundness of our foundation!

  18. good nice… thanks :)

  19. I am well kanyade. Thank you :-)

  20. @LMAO don’t act like you don’t understand what I am saying and I stand by it. It is not just Beyonce most of these celebrities use ghost writers when they write articles like that to make them sound ledgible and credible and like they are some what literate. But she is the only one who gets an award yet again for someone else’s writing. I know this to be true because a good friend of mines is one of the go to writers for such a task. I won’t use her name because I won’t mess up her bread and butter but from what I hear alot of them can’t put a sentence together including the honored one.

  21. ^5 to CYNTHINIA :) I always love your comments

  22. You know that kid in school? I mean he is smart and talented but not Einstein or Mozart, yet everyone acts like it? That’s beyonce. All these fake accolades are only making people detest her even more, what kind of imbecile believes beyonce deserves this award? Or even the most beautiful woman IN THE WORLD award? She needs to learn how to stop letting people use her for jokes and controversy purposes

  23. Beyonce may win lots of awards, but she will NEVER win with black women. Always tearing each other down because of their own insecurities.

  24. That insecure black woman shit is a cop out. Hit up mostly white sites and see what they had to say, especially about that most beautiful People cover. Those mofos straight up showed they ass.

Only insecure Beyonce fans think people who don’t lick her boots are insecure.

From years of being online I can tell you that without a doubt the most insecure ppl in the world are those who covet the accomplishments of others, while having none of their own to brag about.

  25. Kayla!

If you are that insecure that someone winning awards is making you detest them EVEN MORE, then seek help. You don’t know her personally to be “hating” and “detesting” her because ESSENCE submitted her piece and the association felt like she deserved the award in the ARTS and ENTERTAINMENT category.

BTW, essence and the NYBAJ are the imbeciles who thought/believed she deserved the award. You should express your extreme disgust and how this is causing so much hate in your heart to them!

  26. Woohoo: beyonce doesn’t deserve this awards there are many other writers. That’s the bottom line , Don’t worry about my heart or insecurities.

  27. hmmmm…
    I just don’t know how I feel.

    But congrats anyway.

  28. Smh, as a fan i can’t even say nothing to the chicks that know so much about a person they dislike so much. Why does Beyonce bother some of yall so much?

    LMAO i agree with you!!

  29. @Kanyade

    Thanks!!!

  30. sarahbartman

next time she should show a little more arse…she seems to do that so well~

  31. CAREN…CO SIGN!!! THERE IS NO WAY AND I REPEAT NO WAY!! I AM NOT HATING I THINK BEYONCE IS A PHENOMENAL WOMAN!! BEYONCE IS A REMARKABLE TALENT! HOWEVER, I AM WOMAN THAT HAVE NUMEROUS DEGREES. NO WAY SHOULD SHE WIN A JOURNALIST AWARD!! NO WAY!! IT UNFAIR TO YOUR STRUGGLING JOURNALIST WHO HAVE BEEN WRITING AND WAITING YEARS…AND I MEAN YEARS TO WIN ONE!!

  32. It’s a slap in the face to journalists everywhere for her to receive that NABJ award for ONE article!” THIS GOES BACK TO WHY WORK HARD DOES IT REALLY PAY OFF?

  33. Y’all do know she won in the Arts and Entertainment section? Smh, anything to hate over. CONGRATS BEYONCE!!!!!

  34. It’s to the point that if BEYONCE were to cure cancer, stop hunger, or win the Nobel peace prize….it’s just not good enough….it’s a scam….she weaves a weave …she didn’t have her baby….she lied about a surrogate…she doesn’t love jay z…she ruined Kelly s fabulous career….she’s average looking….she’s fake….she beaches her skin….she can’t speak….she is not that pretty….she should not have gotten most beautiful….why did she in the journalism award…..blah..blah ..blah….
BLACK O EN DO BETTER…CUT THIS JEALOUS CRAP OUT….ALLLLLLL THESE MADE UP STORIES, INTERNET LIES, BLOG URBAN MYTHS, INTERNAL BACK ON BLACK HATE..CRABS IN A BARRELL…..
IT’S TO THE POINT THAT IT’S JUST ANNOYING..THIS WOMEN HAD BEEN ON TOP OR OVER 15 yrs. why please explain why are sistas STILL TRYING NOT TO ACCEPT HER TALENT & SUCCESS… I’VE HONESTLY HAD ENOUGH…NEXT WEEK THE BLOGS WILL HAVE HER AS AN ALIEN WITH 9 vaginas….URBAN BLOGS LOST ME AT THE DOLL CARRYING LIE… LET IT GO SHE CONINUES TO BE BLESSED…BECAUSE SO MUCH HATE IS THROWN HER WAY…IT DON’T STICK, BECAUSE IT’S PROBABLY NOT TRUE…LET IT GO…MEANWHILE RHIANA SNORTS COKE, AND SMOKES WEED SUPPOSEDLY…INVESTIGATE THAT…A MESS… BE HAPPY FOR OUR SISTA. SMH……

  35. Congrats to Beyonce. I don’t know why some people say she can’t speak well. She sounds as good as an average person. For all the critics, how perfect would you sound if I mic was constantly being shoved in your face? She’s a performer, not a public speaker, but she speaks just fine. Too many haters with too much time on their hands, trying to critique everything. It’s none of our business how or why, bottom line, she won! Why do you care why?
