If you all here remember, I predicted some weeks ago that Beyonce Knowles would surely win an Oscar, not for acting, but for co-writing the song “Listen” for the “Dreamgirls” soundtrack.Well it looks like that will not be happening as The Academy has deemed her ineligible.Apparently there is some old and sacred rule that says no more than 3 statuettes can be given out for songwriting and thus they will only be recognizing Henry Krieger, Anne Preven and Scott Cutler for the song. The Academy gave no reason for their decision and I am sure we will here cries of outrage and condemnation from Beyonce’s fans, but I will have to side with The Academy on this one and I will tell you why.
Some years ago while doing an interview Beyonce stated she was the writer of X (( I can’t remember the exact number or find the article at this moment.)) number of Destiny’s Childs #1 singles. This caught the writer off guard and he went about doing his homework and later noted how none of the singles she wrote listed her as the sole writer but often had as many as 7 or 8 other people listed as songwriter also. Now we all know 7 or 8 people didn’t really write the song but rather added a word or two here and there and thus qualified for a writing credit. The Academy however is not the RIAA or The Grammys and will not be crediting bit writers and that is what I believe Beyonce was to this song and why they left her out.
I never believed Beyonce was a songwriter in the true sense of what we think a songwriter to be.When I think of a songwriter I think of Diane Warren, Babyface, Roberta Flack, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and Prince.Beyonce is this new age songwriter who fancies herself a writer because she adds bits and pieces to songs. Many artists do this today and then call themselves songwriters (( Ala Jennifer Lopez who actually called herself a songwriter for that garbage of a song “Dear Ben”)) to add credibility to their careers.Unfortunately for Beyonce The Academy wasn’t having it.
Now a part of me definitely feels bad for Beyonce because I believe “Listen” is a shoe in for “Best Original Song” and so do many others. But this is one time where backstage wheeling and dealing cannot save her.It was already reported that Beyonce’s contract called for her to be pushed as Lead Actress only, to the detriment of Jennifer Hudson who actually is the lead. But it appears The Academy is having none of that when it comes to handing out Oscars for songwriting.I also doubt she will be nominated for lead actress either and the chance of her beating such reputable actresses as Dame Judy Dench and Meryl Streep are zero to none even if she is nominated.
Beyonce need not sweat this snub as I am sure she will see many awards for her participation in “Dreamgirls”.She and the entire cast did an excellent job and are expected to sweep The Golden Awards later on this month- as well they should.
Btw, here are pics of Jay and Beyonce taken in The Dominican Republic over the holidays.I know many sites posted these already but I didn’t want to until I had the HQ images to share with you guys.
