Fifty pages will be dedicated to Black fashion designers, models and trend setters who have helped shape the world of fashion as we know it. Tyra and the above ladies will also chronicle how they went from everyday runway models to entrepreneurs running million dollar companies. Look for the issue to hit newsstands August 13th with models Tyra Banks, Alek Wek, Iman and Kimora Lee Simmons on the cover.

This may be the first issue of Ebony that I’ve ever purchased.
eh watch ebony disappoint me next week when i pick this up! i’m really trying hard to believe in ebony since it’s my last hope for a black magazine! and it’s been doing a good job, but i’m thrown off by the three light skinned models, and the “token dark girl” on the cover…i hope they prove me wrong and have a balance because there are many dark girls who have been black icons in the fashion game:

I’ve got this magazine yesterday, the articles are great and the women are beautiful. It’s quite disturbing on how we see people doing something great but yet others will make it a mission to be negative. Is people lives screwed up that much that a person can’t be happy for their own?
Black comes in all shades. i’m gald they have the all shades from kimora to alek there all beautiful. Light/mixed ppl are black to we have to stop says peolple are to black r to white lets appriciate the fact that we come in so many different colors

and i’m not saying celebrating black fashion icons is bad…i’m saying the young children who pick up the magazines that their sisters and mother’s read when filled with only an array of light skinned models sends them a message! let’s face it, we can try to preach to them when they are young that they are beautiful just the way they are but if they don’t see role models that look like them or that they can identify with, a seed is planted that they aren’t good enough! i’m not one to be politically correct i call a spade a spade! i’d like for my younger sister who is still in her molding stages to see that we as black people glorify our own in all shades! i would have liked to see two light skinned girls and two darker girls on the cover or see girls in all shades! it’s not a mission to be negative! it’s calling it how it is! i’ll pick up this issue but i hope there is a BALANCE!

I agree that Kimora Lee is not Black. If many of you did not know she had SOME Black in her, at first glance you would have considered her Asian and that is because she looks 100% Asian. How can someone who looks Asian, or White be Black just because they have a bit of Black in them? That makes no sense and would make most people in this country Black as we know that no one is pure and even many White skinned people have Black blood running through their veins.
Black people love to covet White and other non Blacks out of self hatred and a desire to change what Black is and what it looks like, especially where Black women are concerned.
The White man and every other race under the sun told us that once our blood became mixed with theirs, those offspring were no longer one of them and we just went along with it. How can anyone just be us? Are we so little that just anyone can pop up and be Black? Pamela Anderson spoke of having Black people in her bloodline. Is she now Black too?
Lastly, Kimore has never claimed Blackness and when she speaks of herself only mentions her Asian heritag and I have seen her do it time and time agin. Even her daughters are named for TRUE lineage.
Get it together Black people and show some pride in yourselves cause White folks are watching you all hate yourselves and they know why you are so hell bent of claiming non loking Blacks are your own. They see the self hatred just like I do.

What you say is true but you’re looking at it wrong. Race is a man made construct that identifies people based on the easiest distinguishable feature which is skin color. It is not the set-in-stone grouping orientation that society has come to enforce. Governments love the fact that these divisions exist because it allows for a ‘majority’. This majority feels united by a arbitrary common feature. Skin color and can discriminate etc.
The big fault in society is that we no longer feel as though we are one people. Blacks, whites, arabs, hispanics, asians etc. We can easily add, black-hispanics, white-hispanics, black-asians and a million other racial groups but they wouldnt have enough numbers to warrant social division….
Wake up people Race is what we have allowed it to become and this discussion shows it.

sorry i actually reread your original post and you’re not looking at it wrong. They decided to classify biracial children as black further shows the randomness of race. If they had decided to call these children brown or something we would probably have a whole new race born. of light-skinned black people.

Kimora is black. Her mother is Korean-Japanese and her father African-American.
I do not believe she deserves to be on this particular cover because of all those women, she is the only one who was completely (and I believe still is) bankrolled by her (ex)husband. Tyra, Iman and Alek are all sisters who did it for themselves.
Kimora’s father is not full Black. He himself is of a racial mixture and I stand by original statement of the desperation of Black people to make people who do not look Black, Black. Kimora does not identify Black and she siad so. Get some self respect and stop saying race doesn’t matter or is what we make it and then go on to call her Black. You kill your own point when you do that. I think the bigger issue and question that should be asked is what do Blacks who claim this woman hope to gain from trying to make her something she clearly she is not?
If Kimora self-identifies as part black, what is the problem? If she didn’t want to acknowledge her black ancestry because she can pass as Asian, why would she allow herself to be put on this cover or her ethnicity to be known to the general populace? You guys really need to stop with this “who is black” thing. All bi- and multi-racial celebrities have never hidden their multiple ethnicities, but choose to identify as black–KEY WORD: SELF-IDENTIFY! Any of them, and any bi- and multi-racial person has a choice, so why do black people get psycho over this subject when folks could pass if they so chose to.
And yeah, it’s 2007–people with black or any other “colored” ancestry no longer have to pass as white in order to succeed. They can be proud of their black(or any other non-anglo) heritage and actually talk about it.

Nobody is saying that Halle, or Tracey Ellis is European– obviously not. We’re saying that they are, along with Kimora *MIXED*.
That isn’t imposing what WE think they are– this in, in fact, WHAT they are.
Saying that Kimora is only Asian or only Black is imposing your own want on what she is.
Mixed-race people need to be represented as who they are, a beautiful combination.
