Brandy’s First Week Album Sales

posted by Sista on December 10th, 2008 at 8:42 pm

Singer Brandy released her Human CD this past Tuesday and according to Hits Daily Double she will easily debut inside the top ten with sales of about 70-80,000. This is the singer’s first album under the Epic label and Brandy’s fifth solo album to date. Like a lot of R n’ B females, Brandy saw her release date pushed back and struggled to garner radio support for both her singles- Right Here (Departed) and Long Distance. Still, Brandy has been hot on the promo trail lately and her CD has garnered solid reviews from both fans and critics alike. The singer appeared on the Tyra Banks Show earlier this week and has a BET special airing tonight- Brandy: Just Human, which takes a behind the scenes look into the making of her new album.

  1. hmmm Im not sure if this is considered good or bad numbers for Brandy , not too sure what the expectations were. But nonetheless who cares about numbers, Ive never really been a huge Brandy fan, but it seems like she has really satisfied her dedicated fanbase with this album, Ive heard nothing but praise for it.

  2. I just purchased the album, and I think its great I love Brandy, I am mad she never received her just dues in the industry because she had the 90’s on lock without dressing or dancing to sexually.

  3. Brandy’s album is hot, “piano man” , “a capella(something’s missing) ” my favs

  4. Bad numbers brown sista! I don’t trust HDD anyway. They said Britney would do 300 and she did 500K. Brandy has atleast 100K loyal fans out there. Here first week average is well over 80 k! I am hoping for better and off to the store to by 7 more!

  5. Blame it on tha Rain

I caught Brandy on Tyra & I was impressed w/ how far she has come & grown. She is definetly NOT the Brandy that I knew as a teen & grew up with. She is a humble woman & for that I can only respect her. I am not saying that I will purchase the album & I am not sayin that I will not, but as long as Brandy is happy w/ the product & her fanbase is… that’s a ok. From all that she has gone thru & the interview that I saw, I believe that her album will have a great amount of meaningful songs on it. Good luck Brand

  6. Hey Dominique

HDD was right on the money with Britney first saying she would sell over 400,000 and then on Friday saying she would sell between 470-490,000 copies.

As for Brandy having at least 100,000 fans- I thought Janet had at least 200-300,000 loyal fans who would buy her album in the first week but that didn’t happen with her last 2 albums.

Plus as I said, radio won’t support Brandy anymore and if ppl don’t hear your music they can’t buy it.

I think Brandy has a solid album and a few nice tracks but I think the wrong song was released as the first single.

  7. The album only been out two days LMAO

    these are predictions…

Im sure Brandy will sell over 150 K first week…

HDD are only basing that on first day sales and predictions.

  8. and the right single was released. It was the right song 2 explain what she was coming from, (the accident) it was a smart Introduction, first single if it flopped or not.

  9. i love brandy and i bought the album its really good! who cares about numbers? i dont

  10. Brandy has been in the game for about 20 years, so I say she is an icon in her own right…. Being that we are just labeling people icons now  . I am glad that she continues to release mature records with great lyrics, I am Brandy’s age and I feel that she has grown with me instead of staying stagnant because of comfort. I still listen to “Baby”, “Best Friend”, “Broken hearted” (wanye), “Have you ever”, “Almost doest count”, etc. I really hope that she gets the support that she needs to continue to make music.

  11. i think they are respectable numbers considering how bad the industry is now. sales were down again this week (7% from last week and 22% from a year ago according to billboard) and i think it’s only going to get worse. according to their prediction, next weeks number 1 is supposed to be around 175k (usually around the holidays, the numbers are huge, but now this year). with sales decreasing the way they are (i don’t think they are going to pick up anytime soon), do you guys think that it’s time that they change the certification criteria or do you guys think they should keep it the same?

  12. whew dont bring up that labeling icon stuff in here….we all know who you are referring to and thats the only problem i have with your statment….i agree that brandy can be considered an icon and in my eyes she is…i grew up with brandy and she has been my girl since day one and to me she is an icon

  13. Blame it on tha Rain

    @wohoo

With the way this economy is going I think it would be best for the industry to change the criteria. If not, they will find that even their top notch artist will not be able to have those record breaking numbers that they feel validate the artist’s work.

  14. @blame it on the rain

i agree that they also need to change the criteria. i mean, nobody is selling 10mil anymore to be able to be certified diamond and it is hard to even sell the 1mil for plat status. i look at lil wayne who’s supposed to be the top selling artist of 08 and he has sold 2.6mil. since most big selling artists top of at 3mil or 4mil at max, i think that 3-5mil should be the new diamond, 250k should be gold and 500k should be plat. either that or they should no longer put such emphasis on the certification status

  15. Go brandy! It’s ya birthday! I will be getting that album. One woman I can respect and support. Go my sista :brownsista:

I love her from the beginning of time. I used to try to keep up the braids just like her but they can get expensive…lol…….even now. I enjoy her then and I enjoy the same music now. That’s the kind of music we need. Music that mean something and can stand the test to time. Voice isn’t all that but she was still the coolest chick. Would like for Monica to do something now but…….here’s to wishing.

Glad that final is over

  16. Great convo on here. I was reading on my phone at the gym. I think that Brandy is an icon and need not be compared to OTHER icons. I think that Brandy will see over 100k. I am hoping that HHD reconfigures their numbers. The fan base, upon getting the news, was outraged and went to Target to do something about it! That makes 9 copies for me! Its going to be A Brandy Xmas family! I am really committed to Brandy because her music is “raw” mature, and heartfelt. She is not trying to be a dancer, etc. She is not sporting an alter ego (sorry..Im not trying to come for Bey, but…) So as a 29 year old man, I have a choice.. I can listen to If I were a Boy…oops, Im a man.. dont need that song…

I could listen to single ladies…but ooops, I’m a man and not single. I could listen to womanizer…but oops…?????? What other female of recent has come out with some adult music!?

Finally… Brandy is my BROWN SISTA and they been playing up for years!

    Fina

  17. The HDD estimates are usually pretty accurate, and I think she will do those numbers. I have all of Brandy’s previous albums, but I did not purchase this one(my mom did though, lol). I am not feeling either of her singles, nor the album. Piano Man is my fave though.

  18. I love Brandy and I have all her cds including the new one. The new cd is really good.

  19. Well, have you all thought that maybe Brandy doesn’t really think about numbers? Maybe she just wanna be able to make music again after what she went through? And what aboout her excpectations? . Maybe she didn’t really expect more? Who knows. Either way, I think it’s a success. I believe that there are artists out there who does music cause they want too not because they want to sell millions of records. Of course it’s nice to be able to sell that much but selling a lot isn’t always a sign of a great album.

I recently listen to a Celine Dion interview (in french) that she couldn’t care less about records sales ANYMORE or any form of competition in this industry. She said that she is doing music cause she still wants to do it. Then she only sold 200K on her first week, and everybody said her career was over but then she still sold 4M overall on that particular album. Of course for her status you would think 4M is a small numbers but when I think that Lil’ Wayne sold 1M the first week but overall just over 2M… So it’s all about fan base. I think some artists are making music to make themselves happy and their fans as well.

There are also artists like Tamia. She sold 18K on her first week. Her records mostly go gold and rarely over that, but she keeps on making CDs. I would think that if I was a singer and I sing so well and I have good songs and here I am with a CD barely going gold and there are other artists who clearly sing worse than me but sell a ton more, I would think I would be disappointed that I would refrain myself from making any CD. But I guess I that’s why I’m not an artist. They can be happy as long as the are able to make the art. They are born with that soul.

    I wish Brandy the best.

  20. Brandy’s album is decent. Not her best work, but it’s good. Wish her well. I’m sure her fans won’t let her down.

  21. Well, I agree@ Stephanie. If Radio is not playing your stuff, it is hard to sell. But also, traditional R&B is not catching the ears of the public either. So if an artist going to do that genre, they have to have that in mind and still do them knowing everything will be ok. Besides, more money is made with touring and having publishing in your music anyways. That’s why more and more artists are co-writing their stuff these days.

  22. Brandy’s sales will pick up as things are slowing down in pop music and Beyonce and Rihanna are making it popular again to sing slow songs… Brandy will be find. “Long Distance” will likely get as much play as anything from the other girls.

  23. I saw Brandy on The Tyra show and not only was she hilarious but she also sounds sooo good live. Her voice makes me think of silk, it’s beautiful and sultry. I haven’t bought the album yet, but you can your life that I will do that this weekend. I don’t care how people feel about her, there is something about brandy that I truly appreciate and I’d love to see her in concert.

  24. I’m a Brandy fan and I hope she does well. However, the industry has definitely changed. Her loyal base will buy the album but beyond that her album is going to have a hard time selling during the Rihanna/Beyonce era. As others have said her songs get very little or no rotation on urban/hiphop stations. She missed that window of opportunity to capitalize in between the big album releases. Plus, her cross over appeal is very limited. Its also all relative her numbers probably are not expected to hit beyond 100K the first week anyway. Anyawy, good luck Brandy.

  25. I forgot… I will be getting Brandy and Jazmin (dropped out of the top 50) today!

  26. she was so cute on tyra!

  27. man her sales are better than what I expected. I don’t like this album direction but her last four albums were banging. She needs to leave Darkchild alone. He don’t produce hits like he use to.

  28. I haven’t listened to all of the album yet, but good luck Ms. Brandy :brownsista:

  29. Her cd is great to listen to. It shows her true skills.

  30. PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She is an Icon, she opened doors for the top performers today! She is a legend. True talent! She does’nt even need studio help. Unlike others. Brandy you go girl. B Rocka’s Biggest fan!

  31. Stephanie, I agree with you. A lot of times artists have good albums but the single they choose is not a good reflection on the album. Thats what happend with her Afrodisiac album. That CD was great!

  32. Well her deluxe version is currently inside the top 10 sales on iTunes and the normal version is inside the top 100. It should accumulate to about a top 5 sales in the US if this keeps up for the next week. It is also rising in sales quickly inside Australia and will also be a top 10. GOOD LUCK BRANDY!

  33. Human is the most original album out right now. She sticks to what she knows best – SINGING. All the songs on the album have great single potential, I appreciate this album so much and thank her for bringing her vocal harmonies back to us.

  34. Love and Happiness

OMG, You have just got to hear “Quickly” by John Legend featuring BRANDY, it is the absolute bomb.

One question: What in the hell do the good singers have to do to get their music played on radio? (pay them?)

Anyway, go to youtube and listen to “Quickly” Brandy sounds sooooo sultry.

  35. Brandy’s problem is that she takes very long hiatuses, which causes her popularity to decrease in between each album, therefore affecting her sales. This is because she virtually disappears from the public eye and makes no attempt to stay relevant during these three and four year breaks.

The only reason “Never Say Never” did better than her debut was most likely due to the fact that she was still starring in a hugely successful sitcom (moesha.)

    Love the new album though.

  36. I really do love this album. It’s amazing. The wait was worth it. If I met Brandy I would shake her hand, and say job well done sistah girl. LOL. Thank you brandy for blessin’ us with your album. I hope that you’ll have a big come back. I got 3 copies. Love you Bran Bran. :)

  37. i love you brandy….you make us miss you and i love the fact that u sitback and enjoy the money we have given you….part of making money is about taking a break to enjoy it with your family somewhere we cnt see you….love all your music.

  38. Brandy will never sell what britney did in her first week..HAHA

  39. Im so happy to hear all the great comments said about brandy and her lastest album, Im trully proud f her and all that she has accomplished in life and her career. Yes, she has been underated for a long time, but i feel that her time has now come. I’ve heard ppl who has never listed to brandy by for, say that they will now go a buy her past album becuase of this one. I was so happy to see the other females and or male fan at target the morning of the 9th buying here album. I’ve loved her and always will. And if she reads this I’m proud of you and your voice keeps me smiling through the day!!!

  40. :iagree: Unless you’re Kanye or Lil Wayne, you’re not gonna sell a million copies anymore, number one album or not….

But I’m like a lot of you….I could care less about numbers. It would be nice if Brandy could sell like she did in the 90’s…all I care about is good music..Brandy inspires me…her music, her voice, her ability…awesome. And she has grown soooo much which is why she still remains relevant unlike some of her musical peers of the 90’s. They may have matured as people, but it doesn’t really translate in the music…with Brandy, her growth as a person and her musical growth are synonomous. She is without a doubt my favorite artist ever and my biggest vocal inspiration.

    She’s back!

  41. Brandy will never sell what britney did in a day.HAHA

  42. This is a tough time to make a comeback.. especially if your kind of music is that of Brandy’s. The subject matter of her songs is so superior to the crap you hear on the radio! Brandy’s album is for grown people! I love that she has matured so much. Brandy has come out with an album at every major stage of my life… and I feel like she has grown WITH me! I am praying for her! I want her to do so well. She deserves it!

  43. Play a song for love Mr. Piano Man………………………… LOVE IT.

Brandy never lets me down. She has been one of my favorite artist since I was 15. Like Mary J she has over 30 songs that I know by heart and that has chnage the way I look at life in general. She is humble, beautiful and true. Thats a true artist to me. I :hifive: :hifive: LOVE THE CD ALREADY and I only had it for 2 days now………………………………………

  44. I’ve bought four albums this year that I can listen straight through from beginning to end without skipping…and a couple I’ll let start over and keep playing…Kanye’s “808 & Heartbreak”, a gospel artist by the name of Kierra Sheard “Bright Bold Life”….Danity Kane “Welcome to the Dollhouse” (that’s one that I can let go over and over)…and finally Brandy “Human.”

I applaud her for not just making the typical comeback album (that normally ends up flopping anyway)….going for the biggest producers, having a whole bunch of rappers, and getting naked. She is about the music, her craft, and the art. I love her. I can’t say it enough.

  45. I brought Brandy’s new CD and I love it!! I have played the CD over and over and I hope she does well in the sales. The CD is nice, I love Piano Man, Human, and Don’t Shattered My Heart . Great CD. I have been a fan of Brandy every since she came on the scene. I wish her all the luck

  46. Brandy’s voice is incomparable. Simple as that you either hate it or you love it, most love it. I LOVE IT. i cannot stop playing HUMAN. She has truly touched my heart with this CD and thats whats its all about. Not wearing stripper clothes, leotards, coochie poppin. Beyonce and Rihanna are good dont get me wrong. But I was a little offended at Beyonces DIVA song. I dont think artists should say they are a queen , the best, the this, the that. Who are they to say. Brandy eats humble pie on a regular, and you can truly see in her heart that she just wants her music to be felt like it moves her. To me thats what makes her so relatable. Trust me even after the lawsuit and not coming out with albums every 18 months Brandy is set for life, she was worth 10M back in 1995 before her 2nd album so she has millions of dollars. I say this to reinterate that she does release CD’s for money, she sings because thats where her heart is and her fans mean alot to her. As far as her talent. No artist can come close to the harmonys, ad libs and emotion that Brandy exudes. and remember ppl emotion and volume of singing are 2 different things, ex, Jennifer Hudson emotion and volume. Brandy emotion, musical wit and depth, at one point i used to try to copy Beyonces runs but, im so bored with her now vocally everything so full force. But i will always work at mastering brandy’s runs.

  47. I really wish I could personally thank her. She is the only artists who makes songs that make me emotional, touches my heart, and can bring me to tears….tears from good feeling of course. Her songs are beautiful and her voice is phenomenal. Once again Brandy, thank you.

  48. Say what ever Brandy album sales are POOR :stop: Blame it on the ecomony or whatever people are still selling….Beyonce sold 470K+ copies of her album and so did Britney at that was just a couple of weeks ago….. I think that she was not promoted or that her fans have simply out growned her maybe ME personally I am a CD buyer and went out todya to support Jamie  Foxx…sorry Brandy you may need to focus on actting and then do another album :hifive:

  49. @ Hotcocoa……Brandy’s real fans haven’t OUTGROWN her…just the ones that can’t spell outgrown (ie. your post….”ougtrowned”) I think the truth of the matter is that Brandy has outgrown some of her listening audience because her lyrics are not one dimensional. And the fact that you bought and like Jamie Foxx’s album explains a lot. So sales or no, Brandy’s album is solid. Way to go Brandy!

  50. UnfortUnately, Brandy wears clothes, sings adult contemporary music, and has been gone for four years. All of those things play into album sales. She is not done though. Her album is beautiful. Her story is life-changing. I will always be a fan and she has not outgrown me either!!

  51. well, i am a loyal fan of brandy and i am because her music touches my soul. i don’t know what her record sales will be, but i do know that music has changed and for whatever reason R&B isn’t what it used to be. brandy’s new album is great and i can’t stop listening to it, it’s one of her best. and i BOUGHT IT, limewire is ruining the music industry sales.

and for those who compare her to britney spears, i will say britney spears may out sale brandy but brandy has much better and AUTHENTIC music. brandy stays true to herself, and most artists these day don’t.

  52. This is my whole thing…the industry is full of different artists that serve different purposes and make different types of music…therefore we all have a right to listen to and enjoy whomever and whatever we choose…

So me being a diehard Brandy fan and lover of her music, it’s comical to me that the first thing some people want to do is compare her to an artist that is making a completely different type of music and is not even similar to this artist in her approach, presence, or image. I can praise Brandy without putting someone else down…I just wish that some people wouldn’t try to diss Brandy by saying that someone else is “better” or talking about album sales which as we’ve established does not really determine the quality of the music. Brandy’s most CRITICALLY acclaimed album to date (Afrodisiac) is her lowest selling one.

So if you love Beyonce (which I do), it’s still okay to love Brandy or anyone else…don’t base feelings for one on feelings for another. That’s just my peace.

I would like for Brandy to sell tho just because I love her and want the best for her….lol. So everyone go out and buy ANOTHER copy as a gift! Go Bran Bran.

  53. :stop: fact of the matter is, the music she made before is MUCH better

  54. No one is talking about how well Brandy is doing here in France. She is in the top 7# and I hear Right here, and Long Distance ever 15-30 min.
In France we make room for more then two or three great singers at a time..
Brandy should come to France were we will welcome her big time, and were she does not have to worry about the USA money problem.

  55. :stop: @ JUDITH….the FACT of the matter is that is your OPINION that the music she made before was much better…Brandy has been consistently great and her albums show growth and maturity…IN MY OPINION, “HUMAN” is an awesome concept album and is clever, cohesive, and exquisitely executed.

@ NUBIAN-FRENCH….maybe Brandy should hang out in France for a minute…cuz not only do we have money problems over here, there’s a severe outbreak of HATERISM. Horrible epidemic.

  56. WOW poor Brandy.. She was everywhere promoting her album from radio interviews to talk shows, just from network to network and that’s the opening number she gets. 73,000k! Her album didn’t even debut at least in the top 5 on billboard rather the number 15. I really taught she was gonna sell at least from 150-200k. I even taught she was going to past Janet Jackson opening numbers from her album, but Janet is a pop icon so it kinda made sense on Janet part. But I aint gonna lie, I never really heard Brandy’s 2 singles on the radio to top it off. I mean, not also do you need promotion but as well as radio air play too. (I should know that, being a Janet fan myself) Anyway though like Brandy said, she really doesn’t care about her album sales, because this album really came from the heart. The public is just to busy stuck up on Beyonce’s and Britney’s *** to even recognize real music.
By the way love album. Her best since “Never Say Never”.
