Brown Sista

The New York Chapter of The Recording Academy (Those people who pass out the Grammys) paid tribute to singer Alicia Keys, Bon Jovi, Donnie McClurkin and the Creators of West Side Story, last night at a dinner held at Cipriani’s. Alicia, who has never been known for her sense of fashion, showed up in an outfit that definitely made a statement. I loved the gloves and I can even stomach those gawd awful high waisted pants that have become so popular. However, I have to draw the line when it comes to those shoes. Somehow, once you combine those shoes with the white shirt, black pants and black and white gloves- you get the look of a mime- and I know that isn’t the look Alicia and her stylist were going for.

Foxy Brown isn’t letting a little thing like jail stand in her way of making music. The sista has released her first single, We Will Not Surrender, and to your right is what I am told is the cover art for that single. What can I say? The sista looks good. As many of you know, poor Inga Marchand will be “away” for the next year as a result of her breaking the terms of her probation. It seems the moment she was locked up her label decided to rush her single to capitalize off of the media attention. However I don’t think it’s going to work. With Foxy away she can’t promote her single and album in any way and going to jail to pump up album sales doesn’t work anymore and honestly should have never worked.

Jennifer Hudson was spotted in midtown Manhattan today shooting scenes from her upcoming movie, Sex and the City. As we reported here some weeks ago, Jen will be playing Carrie Bradshaw’s assistant (Louise) and judging from the pic to your right, her shoe game may be just as tight as Carrie’s. Patricia Field who is the stylist for this movie and the series, seems to be pushing the fashion envelope with Jennifer’s character and I like that. Many stylists would generally try to play Jennifer down due to her size but I think what Patricia is doing is far more bold and will ultimately help Jennifer’s character stand out more.

Usher unveiled his new fragrance for men and women, appropriately named, “Usher for Men” and “Usher for Women”, at a star studded party at Cipriani’s in Manhattan. Usher’s mom, Jonetta Patton, as well as Beyonce, Gayle King, Jermaine Dupri, Nelly, and others were on hand to help him celebrate. I received samples of both fragrances about two weeks ago, and though I know many of you have heard awful things about them, I assure you, both smell wonderful. I was particularly fond of his fragrance for men, and I’m happy to announce the 12 year old, 16 year old and 38 year old males whose opinions I asked for, also liked the smell (lol).

Alicia Key’s premiered her video for her single “No One” on Bet’s 106 & Park today. The video is understated as most of Alicia’s videos are. However, this one seems to spend quite a lot of time showcasing her stunning new look and figure. I know most people couldn’t help but talk about Broccoli Spears after the VMA’s, but it was Alicia’s new booty body that caught the eye of most of the people I know. Don’t act like you didn’t see those hips when Alicia’s silhouette first hit the screen (lol). Me thinks Alicia has hit the gym and intends to show more of her sexy and feminine side on this new CD.

Singer Whitney Houston was spotted in midtown Manhattan today having lunch with Clive Davis at the Nobu 57 Restaurant. As many of you already know, Clive was the wind beneath Whitney’s wings at the beginning of her career and is now personally overseeing her comeback CD, which is rumored to be released sometime in the new year. So far Akon and Ne-yo have been brought on board to help Whitney regain the pop stardom she once had, but I would rather see Diane Warren, David Foster or Babyface writing and producing for her next project. Diane, David and Bayface all gave Whitney some of the biggest hits of her career and are true songwriters and producers, not just beat makers.

With the Salt n’ Pepa show just weeks away, VH-1 has released publicity shots of rap music’s original Spice Girls, and I swear looking at these two sistas brings back so many memories for me of growing up in the Bronx. Salt n’ Pepa were to my generation what The Supremes were to my mom’s generation. Yes- it is just that deep. Every Black girl growing up in the NYC wanted to look and dress like S n’ P. The biker shorts and leather jackets, the blond asymetrical hairstyle- you name it- whatever they did- we copied it. I just knew I was Pepa and my girlfriend from upstairs was Salt (lol) .

It was a slow weekend folks. So slow the only thing I have to report is Rihanna’s concert performance and Beyonce being photographed walking down the street. And if I can just take a second to just get real here for a moment, does anyone here ever get tired of just looking at random pics of celebrities doing such mundane things as walking down the street or eating at an outdoor cafe? Lawd knows I get tired of posting such things. I mean, how interesting can someone walking or eating be? But I digress. I am here to let you all know what your favorite celebs are up to and if that only includes them walking and eating, then I guess I had better give it to you. So we’ll kick things of with Rihanna, who performed at the Molson Theater in Toronto on Sunday night.

Model Naomi Campbell, who just turned 37 this year, walked the catwalk in Milan over the weekend and put her younger, skinnier rivals to shame. Sporting an emerald sequined swimsuit, Naomi took the catwalk to the tune of “It began In Africa”, by the Chemical Brothers, which kicked off the Miss Bikini Luxe 2008 Spring-Summer Collection. Naomi however, was not just in Milan to walk the runway and show off the fabulous figure that made her famous, she was also there in support of her charity, Fashion for Relief, which says it has already given away over a million dollars in support of Hurricane Katrina victims.
