Brown Sista

Singer Keyshia Cole was spotted over the weekend performing at the NFL PLAYERS Party prior to Super Bowl XLII. The singer performed wearing a black chicken feathered vest (lol, I couldn’t hold that in) and a noticeably darker do. I can’t decide whether I really like this new look or not as the quality and angle of the picture is not so good. My first impression however was a thumbs down. Keyshia, like Mary and Beyonce before her, has worn her hair light brown for so long that I just cannot imagine them without it. Mary I believe can and has pulled off black hair in the past. Keyshia and Beyonce however are not having the same luck. But that’s just my opinion. What do you guys think? Does Keyshia’s new do get a thumbs up or thumbs down?

Keyshia Cole latest CD, “Just Like You”, hasn’t been out for six months and yet the singer says her record label; Geffen, is already pressuring her to have a new album ready for the Christmas season. This is bad news as far as I am concerned because in my opinion artists need time to rest and rejuvenate so they can live a little and come back with fresh and new ideas. Throwing albums together in a couple of months may work for fluffy pop acts but I believe Keyshia’s fans want more than a bunch songs thrown together for the sake of appeasing the record label. They want Keyshia herself. They want Keyshia to come back singing about her life, her pains and her experiences. In other words, they don’t want “Umbrella” from Keyshia. They want some real soul.

It could just be a disgruntled producer’s sour grapes, but producer Damon Elliot says Keyshia Cole has virtually wiped him from her musical history, even excluding him from Grammy nominations he says he deserves. Elliot, who is legendary singer Dionne Warwick’s son, says that he was instrumental to Cole’s discovery and success through his Confidential Records label, which Cole is still signed to. In a press release, Elliot claims that he discovered the Bay area singer via actress Meagan Good, who invited him to hear Cole sing on the Los Angeles set of “Biker Boyz,” the movie she was filming at the time. Elliot says once he heard Cole sing, he then introduced her to songwriter/producer Greg Curtis. Cole’s hit song “Love” was a result of that meeting. Elliot says he played “Love” for a recording executive, which led directly to Keyshia being signed by Interscope. Elliot even included the aspiring singer in several interviews he was doing for projects he was working on with Mya, Destiny’s Child, Pink and Jessica Simpson. A 2002 ASCAP.com profile of him talks about his work with those artists and more as well as his debut in film scoring with the Jaime Kennedy vehicle “Malibu’s Most Wanted.”

Keyshia Cole has done it again. The season finale of her BET reality series, The Way It Is, gave the network their highest ratings ever for an original series. More than two million viewers tuned in to the finale to learn the results of a DNA test. After seeing the show last season a man had come forward claiming to possibly be Keyshia’s father. Adding to the drama was a family reunion staged by Keyshia’s manager that brought her entire family together, including two siblings she had only recently met, as well as Keyshia’s foster and biological families. If you missed all the drama, fret not as BET will be re-airing the finale several times over the weekend.

“I Remember”, the third single from Keyshia Cole’s platinum CD, Just Like You, had it’s video premiere last night on BET’s Access Granted. Arguably the best song on “Just Like You”, “I Remember” is a big ballad and obviously meant to be this CD’s “Love”. The video was shot last month and Benny Boom, who has directed several videos for Keyshia in past, directed this one as well. Overall I like the video and think it goes nicely with the song. It’s not too over the top but definitely shows Keyshia attempting to upgrade her image from around the way girl to full fledge grown woman. As many of you already know Keyshia Cole is Vibe Magazine’s December 2007 covergirl. Keyshia set tongues a wagging and officially elevated herself to sex symbol status when she posed topless for the cover. Vibe promised more breathtaking photos of Keyshia inside the magazine and I think they delivered on that promise. Keyshia’s inside pictorial features her totally dressed, but no less stunning. I compared these photos to those she took for Vibe back in 2006 and truly there is no comparing the two. Keyshia seemed quite uncomfortable with the sex symbol label back then but without a doubt seems to embrace it more as she says “she is comfortable in her own skin now”.
