America Gets It’s 1st Black President

Barack Obama November 4, 2008 is a day that will live in the American consciousness for years to come. It is the day so many of those who went before us hopes and dreams were realized with the Election of Barack Obama as the first Black President of the United States. Who amongst us would have thought this possible just a year and half ago? A Black family in the White House is not something any of you reading this would have thought possible in your lifetime. A celebration is in order for what Brother Obama has accomplished. The inspiration it will conjure up in the hearts and minds of Black people in America and in the Diaspora is immeasurable. Congratulations to Barack and Michelle, as well as Joe Biden and his wife Jill.

Reader Mail: Where Are The Black Women?

Ananda Lewis Host BET Special Last week I got an e-mail from someone named “Fed Up”, who wrote to me, and several other websites, to complain about the lack of Black women hosts on BET. Because I haven’t watched the channel in years I wasn’t sure what shows the channel had on or who the hosts were. I knew both AJ and Free were replaced, AJ by another Black male and Free by a Hispanic female. What I didn’t know was that the other two hosts BET has that are women are also not Black. Julissa, host of the now defunct College Center, was a Latina and Sharon Carpenter who has a news show on the channel, is half White and East Indian. Even after finding this out I found it hard to care and I definitely wasn’t surprised. I have been saying for years that there has been a movement to remove Black women from all things Black and replace them with multi-ethnic women, who oftentimes are just accepted as Black simply because they are of color. So the question is, does anyone care? As more and more people start to take notice of this, and they have, what will BET do? What will we as Black women do? Will we demand to see our own image represented on a channel with the name “Black” in it, or will we just fall back and disappear into oblivion?

Girls, Gadgets & Gizmos

LG Shine (Red) I recently bit the bullet and decided to replace my broken down unlocked Motorola SLVR with a new and more updated phone. Now because I am not very tech savvy and really don’t use my phone that often, I didn’t really look for features, rather I decided to buy one that had qualities most women look for when buying new things- I bought one that I thought was pretty (lol). Yep, my sleek new $319.00 (before tax) phone is none other than the LG Shine- the red one y’all. This phone is so cute. It is a slider phone that has the basis stuff phones have camera, video, mp3 player- but most of all ladies- are you sitting down? This baby has a mesmerizing 2.2 wide mirror LCD- that means when idle you can check your make-up with this cute little thingy because it turns into a mirror. This feature alone sold me on the phone.

I Think I’m Addicted To Chapstick

Actually not just chapstick, but anything balmy that goes on the lips.I actually did a search of “lip balm” or something like that and to my surprise there are websites devoted to this obsession and some actually believe it’s a conspiracy… to do what I have no idea. Anyway, I used to chalk this up to me being a girly girl, but now I’m not so sure.I buy lip products in bulk and rarely if ever go inside a store without picking up Chapstick, Blistex… something.I hate lipstick and can’t stand lip gloss, but I am absolutely mad over anything designed to keep my lips soft, supple and extra plump looking. Carmex is one of my favorite products, but recently I found -> this website < - and my life has not been the same since. If you are a lip balm fan as I am you will be in absolute heaven.

… And I Should Care Because?

A few days ago I got an interesting e-mail from a man who says his name is Brian. Brian for some reason came to this site, used my contact form, and sent me a very lengthy e-mail explaining to me why he hates and refuses to date Black women. Brian titled his e-mail “My Confession”. Brian contacted me, a Black woman who runs a site in support of other Black women, to confess his dislike of us. Why? Why me? What made this man come to Brown Sista, see what I do and then feel his confession would be of interest to me? What exactly was Brian trying to accomplish with his e-mail and why was he trying to accomplish it with the very type of woman he claimed to despise- A Black Woman?

American Gangster’s Portrayal Of Black Women

I meant to post a Talk To Me Tuesday article yesterday but totally forgot. I know we pretty much have a free for all on Tuesdays but I wanted to devote yesterday’s segment to the movie American Gangster and it’s portrayal of Black women. I have not seen the movie but have read a great a deal about what people think of it on my forum. Quite a few complaints were about the way sistas were portrayed as appose to how the film’s only non sista, the character of Denzel’s wife, was portrayed.
