Ciara’s New Movie Going Straight To DVD

For reasons not expounded on, singer Ciara revealed to Billboard magazine earlier this month that her new movie, Mama I Want To Sing, will not be hitting theater screens later this year, but rather will be going straight to DVD in early 2009. If you all remember, jaws dropped when news spread that the dance diva was cast in the starring role and even more questions were raised when the only clip from the movie to be released did not feature Ciara and had the title song being sung by another singer. If this news is true, (IMDB still has October 10th. 2008 listed as the release date) it is truly sad because outside of Ciara, the casting for this movie, which included Lynne Whitfield, Hill Harper, and Billy Zane, was truly spectacular.

If you haven’t seen the trailer for the film yet you can view it here, and the few photos that were released from the set can be seen here.

I thought this was going to be Dreamgirls worthy but I knew something was wrong when we didn’t hear much about it and the clip featured reviews from the stage play years ago and not from the actual movie.

It doesn’t take a genius to know that Ciara’s acting is what tanked this movie. Not only that but she is not a singer singer and should have never been cast in the first place. Why does Hollywood always have to try and hire people like Janet and Beyonce when real Black actresses are in need of work. They could have put Heather Headley in this role but I guess they wanted a bigger name and to hell with acting and singing talent.

I agree JBL, but I would still like to know why they have chosen to send it to DVD? Was this always the plan and if not what exactly led them to this decision?

    hey ya’ll.
many black movies are going straight to dvd. but what some people don’t understand is that the straight to dvd market is huge for black actors. so i really don’t think anything is wrong with the film why it’s going straight to dvd.
but then again i am curious as to why it isn’t getting a chance in the theatres……then again this could just be a rumor. either way, when the film comes on tv, i’ll watch! lol.

^^^ It doesn’t take a genius to ‘watch the actual movie’ before they judge or critique an actor’s acting skill in the damn movie. smh @ people.

The reason why? many movies go to Straight To DVD
is because they are not expected to have financial success.

I agree with twa. sari sounds like a jealous dumb *** hater. How you know Ciara acting killed the movie if you ain’t even seen it yet? smh Typical dumbass. And Janet and Beyonce must be doing something right because they are getting cast in movies and your favorite actresses are not. People will still pay to go see them no matter what your hating *** think. Cry a river and get over it.smh

You know, JBL, I have just started getting into black straight to DVD. I have: A Good Man is hard to find, Dirty Laundry, Three can Play that Game, Sunday School, All of those movies were great. I’m not mad I will be adding this to my collection.

@diddy kong, you’re exactly right. The straight to DVD market and rentals is extremely huge. This market is grossing a few billion dollars a year. It’s a great route for black movies and actors who can’t find the budget or support from the major studios.

I don’t know how true this rumor is but it may be better if it goes straight to DVD because I think it would have bombed at the box office. I mean besides a Tyler Perry film, a “black movie” has a history of not doing well in the Theatre but better on rentals and dvd purchasing.

Straight to DVD doesn’t mean it’s bad, but straight to DVD with a MAINSTREAM CELEBRITY in it means that there must be something wrong about this movie, especially when you see the list of the other big names. They choose these famous international young artists to generate money in the first place not to make the movie go straight DVD. Something is wrong.

I think this movie going straight to DVD is an excellent idea. I personally don’t think it would’ve done well in theaters and it’s really good for my fam and me because we love watching straight to DVD films during the holidays. :)

I get what many of you are saying…. the DVD rental for Black movies is REALLY big right now. I know I check them out whenever I can. Some of the films are great while others are horrible, however it’s like that w/ ANY movie… it’s a gamble. However, most , well the majority, of those movies are INDEPENDENT films… which means that the producers knew that the movie would not be marketed to the main stream & not make it to the big screen. This movie w/ Ciara was PROMOTED ,@ least in the beginning, as a big screen movie. The fact of the matter is that the producers put Ciara in a title role b/c they felt that she is a “megastar” & can generate big numbers which equals big bucks. But obviously they picked up that the majority of ppl really didn’t care about the movie & decided to downgrade. I know that I personally didn’t see anything in the trailers that would want to make me spend my $7.50 @ the theater, but hey maybe someone else does. And yes there are some really great actors in this film & good acting is ALWAYS a plus, but sometimes you need a tad bit more than an all star cast to make a film float… like a decent plot are something of that nature. I have seen plenty of films w/ great actors & the movie truly sucked b/c the plot was just horrible. Either way I am not surprised by this change of heart by the producers.

Theater or straight to dvd, I still get to druel over drop dead gorgeous Hill Harper.

There are may reasons, some financial and some political, as to why black movies are shelved more than those pointless foolishness that white actors do that seem to find their way to major theaters around the world. But, wherever our movies land, we must support it to the utmost. Just like we got together and lifted Barack up, we can do the same for black hollywood. We need to let these distributors know that our money is just as green. We are happy for the success of Tyler Perry, Spike Lee, etc… But, there are many more diverse talent and perspectives that need a chance.

We’ve got work to do black people.

I hate that the movie is going to dvd, but also now these movies tickets getting so high now, I always wait til the movie comes on dvd. I don’t see why people hate on ciara. Like it was said watch the movie first before you judge. Give her a break, she gets alot of bad press any way about her not being a good singer, not acting good. **** she is not rihana. I think this movie would of put her on the map! Give her a chance, she has her own swager!

I would spend $9 at the theater or buy a DVD just to watch her dance in 2/3 scenes!

@BadGirl23: Black movies do bad at the box office because for one black people boot leg too much. And, the movie industry knows this so they are not investing a lot of money in them. So stop buying all of those terrible boot leg copies and get to the show and see the picture. The second reason is because most of the black pictures are the same picture or they market them wrong because the movie executives think we all think alike, talk alike, live alike, and have the same tasted. Those are some reasons I think that black movies don’t do well.

Movie studios get kickback on dvd sales; sometimes moreso than what they did via theatrical runs. Okay, what I really mean is sometimes they are just more successful going the dvd route… And maybe with this feature the studio is hesitant about fronting the $mula$ for a cinema-run; maybe they’re playing it safe because they WILL get their monies back this way. I’ll rent it.

Exactly @ Carman, Where is my baby BILLBOARD COVER ? This is the reason we are not taking serious by white media. I blame it on the negativity on black blog. Why do we tear each other down rather than uplift. Ciara is a producer and a director so it only a matter of time before she funds her on project like Beyonce. Both of these beautiful lady have made history with their music background opening other doors for success. Ciara will not lose. FANTASY RIDE will be out Nov 02,2008

I have been sick the last few weeks and posting very little. I do check the site via my PDA and hopped outta bed to hit up this post and answer a few questions.

First, BrownSista has never torn down any Black woman here- even those I do not particularly care for, and trust me there are quite a few.

Ciara’s Billboard cover and pics of her with the dog didn’t get posted because I already had a Ciara post on the front page. It wasn’t any personal gripe I have with her. Make no mistake about it, when she starts promoting Fantasy Ride this blog will be going along for the ride.

FYI, Rihanna’s pics with Chris Brown and Whitney’s pics with Ray J also weren’t posted- again because I had posts about them on the front page and didn’t want the overkill factor. Plus, I woke up late yesterday and figured you all had probably already seen those pics anyway.

Also, many pics that don’t make this site do make our gallery at http://brownsista.net.

Ciara is looking most awful in those new pics of her with her dog. She looks terrible. She looks anorexic and totally unhealthy. Everyone is talking about it. Ciara was never fat or thick. She was always fit and toned looking but now that has gone totally to the extreme and I can only assume her desire to be a model has caused this drastic change in her look.

The movie would have debuted at the box office if they had someone else play her role. I’ve seen the few movies Ciara was in and she didn’t do it. That’ my honest opinion. Like it or not. Honestly the last movies I saw that portrayed a singer was Introducing Dorothy Dandridge and What’s Love Got To Do With It. Y?!!! Because those were real actors. Even though they lip synched, they played the hell out of those roles. With Whitfield in it and a few others hopefully it sell pretty good.
