“For Colored Girls” Casting News

While attending the premier of their latest movie “Why Did I Get Married Too,” Tyler Perry and Janet Jackson announced that they would once again be teaming up. The pair will reportedly start production on their next venture “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf,” in June. The project will be the film adaptation of Ntozake Shange’s poem-play featuring 20 Black women speaking on the challenges they face in modern society. Other names associated with the film include Whoopi Goldberg, Jurnee Smollett, Mariah Carey, Kimberly Elise, Loretta Devine, Macy Gray, Kerry Washington and Phylicia Rashad. Kimberly and Mariah are the only two that made the cut from Perry’s initial wish list that he mentioned back in September 2009, which initially included Beyonce Giselle Knowles, Halle Berry and Oprah Winfrey.

  1. I’m not thrilled about Mariah Carey but her acting has gotten better. BUT, I like the cast. Can’t wait for this one.

  2. i can’t believe tyler actually considered casting beyonce with all the talented people he has worked with.

  3. Rather than trying to get an all star cast, he should have focused on trying to get a qualified and capable cast. Some of those names are fine but he could have traded in some of those singers for real actresses. Beyonce cannot really act. No need to fight over it, she cannot. I have seen Macy Gray in Lackawana Blues and she was ok, but she could have been left off the list right along with Beyonce. Same goes for Mariah Carey. Her role in Precious was small and not so well acted that she needs to be given a role that would have served another Black actress much better. Tyler’s wish list had some great names but many others were clearly only wanted for the attention to the project they would bring.

  4. I read this book and it was a powerful read I pray that Tyler and Janet can really bring this to life in a way us sistaz can be proud of.

  5. yeah I would prefer to see more actors than music stars. Somebody like Alfre Woodard, Regina King, and Minnie Ripperton’s daughter from SNL. Love her. Tracee Ellis Ross, the Mowry twins – just switch it up a bit and surprise us.

  6. @ Cicely,

Absolutely, the limelight is big enough to share with new people.
Urgh… even celebrities have monopolies! :noway:

  7. hah….@ black sista.
but it’s not like she can’t act. she should get something to start up her career again. because i saw that bet movie and i must say if that was neicy reprised then i don’t know nothing.

  9. Umm..Tyler was very straight foward about who he wanted in this film and yes the woman everyone loves to hate Beyonce was someone he really wanted(I thought he said Oprah to) but I guess she didn’t want to do it or something.
If Beyonce was in this film Tyler’s fanbase would probably decrease drastically which is 🙁

  10. I feel the same way. Beyonce can perform and sing but she needs to stay away from acting. I’m saying this as a fan of her music. Love her! I haven’t looked at the movie OBSESSED because of her. I just don’t want to see any of her bad acting. C’mon Tyler give the real actresses a chance. I’d love to see Victoria Rowell in this.

  11. I agree with Cicely. Sadly, Tyler Perry plays into popularity (probably for sales’ sake) and not necessarily working out of principle and purpose. Also, to piggy-back on what MellyColley said, there are so many talented black actresses who just can’t get a break due to singing talents taking all the good roles. These ladies are cast because they are believed to bring notoriety to the film/play. It’s all about the dollar and not talent.

  12. I’m Glad he left Most of the Non acting brats out of this movie, Maybe i’ll check it our, It’s time to bring some new talent Tyler…
