Dreamgirls Storms The Box Office

The movie “Dreamgirls” took the Christmas Day box office by storm, raking in nearly 9 million dollars in it’s first day of limited release according to figures released by the studio. The big screen version of the hit Broadway show which is loosely based on the story of Diana Ross and The Supremes generated ticket sales of $8.7 million as it expanded on Monday to national release in 852 theaters from an early run in just three theaters. The tally was enough to land “Dreamgirls,” in second place in the Christmas Day box office race, just behind “Night at the Museum,” which grossed about $11.8 million but was released to twice as many theaters.I think it is safe to say that had “Dreamgirls” been released to the same number of theaters as “Night At The Museum”, it would have easily come in at first place.Hopefully this weekend Dreamgirls will take the number one position as it is due to be released to even more theaters across the country.

  1. Why did the studios release the movie the way they did? Why the limited release crap? Why not just open the movie across the country in as many theaters as they could the way it is usually done? After all this promotion, for Dreamgirls to come in at any spot but #1 looks bad. Here is another tally I saw and it sux if you ask me.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Monday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Wednesday.

    1. “Night at the Museum,” $42.2 million.

    2. “The Pursuit of Happyness,” $23.1 million.

    3. “Rocky Balboa,” $17 million.

    4. “The Good Shepherd,” $13.9 million.

    5. “Charlotte’s Web,” $9.5 million.

    6. “Eragon,” $9.3 million.

    7. “Dreamgirls,” $8.9 million.

    8. “We Are Marshall,” $8.6 million.

    9. “The Holiday,” $7 million.

    10. “Happy Feet,” $6.6 million

  2. DG is a movie with an all Black cast and still to this day there are places where such movies cannot be played. All Black movies always get released to a limited number of theaters, even those with an allstar line-up are not exempt. The released DG the way they did to test the waters of American acceptence and now bit by bit they will open it to more places and hope for the best.

What did you all think of the movie.I thought it was sort of a let down. No one was as good as I had heard and Beyonce wasn’t as bad as I had heard.Eddie didn’t rock my world and Jennifer was okay at best.It wasn’t the worst movie I have ever seen but it wasn’t one of the best either. It was totally saved by all the performances.I give them all that, they can blow and dance their behinds off.

  4. I feel the same way. The Movie was Over-Hyped and it wasn’t all that(kinda dull).. The performances saved the movie and Jennifer Hudson singing ” And I and telling u”

I agree with yoiu totally. The hype machine was in full effect and we all fell for it hook, line, and sinker. It was still a good movie though, just not a great movie. The performance is the only thing that kept this movie from being a total stinker.I loved Jennifer and her character was the only person you really cared about.Beyonce’s acting was a little stiff but she still pulled off her role and of course Anika was the best out of all of them.

  6. I think the reason some people didnt like this movie is because they are too young and ghetto to understand that this is a classic and not to mention adated from a play. What do you expect? Its a musical.
