Erykah Badu Attends Essence ‘Black Women in Music’ Event

Erykah Badu Wows in Ashi Studio Black Velvet Gown

Essence magazine’s 8th Annual Black Women in Music event was held last night at the NeueHouse in Hollywood, California. This year’s ceremony honored singer Erykah Badu, who per usual, showed up and showed out. Erykah was literally drooling jewelry as she graced the red carpet in a black velvet gown from Ashi Studio’s 2016 Fall Couture Collection.

Erykah toned things down later as she took to the stage to perform, but as always, her look was just as eye-catching. It’s been 20-years since the soul diva burst onto the music and fashion scene, yet she remains an undeniable force that continues to inspire a whole new generation of women.

One of those women, Solange, was on hand to present Erykah with her award. The ‘Seat at the Table’ singer prefaced her introduction with a story about calling Badu for guidance after feeling overwhelmed by the success of her most recent album.

“I was crying ugly tears at 3:00 a.m. Out of all the people I could have called, I called her. She told me a story in the only way a woman could who has written songs that we all confessed and saluted ourselves in. Then I was at ease in the same way that I was the first time I heard On & On. I am forever grateful for that phone call, her guidance and, most of all, her art and how it has changed the way that we all see, hear and feel ourselves. She is a beautiful reminder that you cannot put us in a box”
