Erykah Badu’s “Honey” Video
Stephanie on January 27, 2008 at 10:58 pm (8 months, 1 week ago)
The video for Erykah Badu’s new single “Honey” has been enveiled and like many of Erykah’s past videos, it is incredibly stylish and in a class all it’s own. Erykah pays tribute to great artists past and present and is pure fiyah during the Andre 3000 tribute. Check out Ms Badu above doing it as only she can.
Btw, can anyone here name all the artists Erykah pays tribute to? I got about five of them but quite a few stumped me.

hmmm i’m kinda disappointed with the video. maybe it’s because i didn’t recognize some of the tributes, but really i think it’s because i hate the song! this song is a FAR cry from the erykah that gave us “on and on”, “tyrone”, “bag lady” and other erykah classics. this sounds like a punked out and watered down pop tune…i want the old erykah back!!!

Yeah shout out to Ms Badu–This song is excellent–its hot–
Now for the youngin’s go listen to rhianna alicia and mary scream about nothing and the good life This is for the born before 1985 Crew
For errybody else just paid off all their student loans and remember what a real house party was listen
C’mon Brownsista–first of all the song Honey and the album cover with the girl drinking the honey is the ohio players OMG!!!
It was released in 1975 the cover was very controversial for that time is an all time classic–My uncle had it on the wall in his room–remember the poster on the wall in the room–these are internet babies–OMG!!
Other tributes
Diana Ross the Boss
Prince’s cover
Chaka’s lips
The 1970’s imports of black classics like minnie riperton(because record labels could release them over seas with different cuts)ew the internet is killing us–yougins at least now why there are no more foreign releases–the reason because you can download them now ew wee other tributes include
Grace Jones/Bobby brown
First of all again —you had to go to the record store and buy the music you could not download it so that is a political statement in itself==with Tower records closing that was the end on an era—and payola was addressed in this video—when she declined the cash at the register—the ape at the end–what to signify how we now have gift cards and that should be primal not the record store…ew our children dont know their ancient history their history or nothing about nothing but pop-drop and lock it—weed-and designer clothes at citi trends—–the end is near–I take that back yougins look at this video and learn something …this is totally said beautyand brains must be 16—our children dont know anything…the Japanese children are winning….

I saw these unmentioned tributes:
Eric B & Rakim (album with her and a man in b-boy outfits with dollar signs)
Tribe Called Quest (the colorful one)
That was from back when hip hop was still great!

I thought it was great… but I’m from the South too and we love everything Erykah does. That lipstick she was wearing, I looked at it last week! lol It’s so striking on her and she’s got a gorgeous figure.
ChocoLush 71, I liked your breakdown but I think Erykah sorta likes the fact that we don’t “get” it all…she likes being esoteric… Remember her first record? There’s an interlude where she explains the meanings of all these terms she uses… I think she very much likes leaving most of us confused…

I think Nas “Illmatic” wasn’t mentionned….
And part of the video is a remake of Andre 3000’s “Hey Ya” video, she’s paying hommage to the father of her first child.
Go ‘head Badu!!

I didn’t like the song at first — but that was probably the best video I’ve seen in a while. So original and creative!
I wonder why she had the Sa-Ra guys in the video. Not fans of them…

i must say i am offended and disappointed by your comment. why did you feel the need to disrespect me? simply because i have an opinion? it it YOU who are limited, and your comments prove such! why did you feel the need to label me as a 16 year old girl who isn’t very cultured? all i said was that i don’t like the music video. what’s wrong with that? and i don’t like the song because it’s not the ORGANIC and rootsy erykah that i’m used to…is that a crime? and so what i didn’t get all the tributes? it’s not my fault i was born in 1986…and my age has nothing to do with my musical taste…you know why? because my generation has youtube…i can go there and listen to classic artists i’m introduced to…i love otis redding, aretha, roberta, the turtles, and the temptations just like the other older person because i can go on youtube and appreciate the music. and furthermore i can go on the internet and listen to a stream from india, ireland, pakistan, or africa…because of youtube i can watch classic broadway plays like les miserables…how dare you? it’s about respect and i did not disrespect anyone so i fail to see why your tirade was warranted…and why did you feel the need to diss mary, alicia and rihanna? everyone has their own musical style…if every artist sang the same thing we’d all be bored…i’m sure you don’t only listen to one type of music, do you? and furthermore not every youngster downloads music…anyways i’m done…and for the record i am a well rounded 21 year old young woman and damn proud of it…sorry if makes you uneasy!!!

BeautyANDbrains, hey you are right, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But you did rag pretty hard on a sister that a lot of sisters and us brothers love. I’m down here with “E” and she prides herself with putting out new songs with a different flavor but still “Old School”. As a matter of fact before she puts out anything she gives us a taste of it first and if “HOME” thinks it’s “Hittin” then it goes on the album. A perfect example is one of the songs that you love,”Tyrone”. In that video she announces to the crowd how she was messing around and put together that particular song and thought she would try it out. You know she IS sensitave about her _ _ _ _!! In the music world you can’t stay the same. You have to keep evolving or you will get left behind. Her attitude with the way she approaches music is just that way. Thats how you stay ahead or with the game. Janet,Mary,Mariah,to name a few are still here because of that. I love the oldies too but you have to keep moving. So be yourself but try not to attack em so hard.
beautyANDbrains said,
hey del,
i appreciate your comment, and the fact that you didn’t have to dip low for it! i respect that. on the other hand, i didn’t rag on her hard…the song is just soooooooo pop! lol! i dunno, maybe when i hear the second single…right now i’m just not feeling “honey”…and i so understand the need to switch it up! i mean look at jill, her three albums sound different but she kept that jillesque sound you know? and look at alicia, one every album her sound evolves and this last album was waaaaaaaaaay different, but it still had that alicia stamp. it’s just that this song in my opinion sounds…i dunno…sort of forced, and i hope her label isn’t trying to turn her into some neo soul pop tart… i really can’t judge the album by one single though, i just hope that this single isn’t representative of what’s on the album…again thanks del!!!

Love this video and the song. It’s HOT, HOT, HOt!!! I like the old school album/artitsts references (i.e., Eric B & Rakim, Chaka Khan, Ohio Players, Nas and was that Minnie Ripperton?). Clever and witty. Plus, the guys in the video are sexy. 9th Wonder did his thing. I like it alot and it has me anxiously awaiting the albums arrival on February 28. It’s a far cry from what these youngins are putting out. She’s a class act and a true talent. Do your thang Erykah. You’re representing the 30 something crowd well. We luv ya.

Summerbreeze,
The one with the honey is the Ohio Players. If you look good at that she has a sly reference to the group (in the upper left corner) where it says Okay Player. What was the one with the big afro that took up the whole album? Couldn’t figure that one out. The others I got (except John and Yoko).
