Fox Renews Empire + Sleepy Hollow on Hold

After airing only two episodes Fox has decided to greenlight a second season of its hip-hop family drama ‘Empire.’ The show’s pilot was a huge success, drawing in just over nine millions viewers and easily besting its competition. With great reviews and much fanfare being lauded on Taraji P. Henson for her broom wielding portrayal of Cookie Lyons, ‘Empire’s second episode surpassed the first, increasing its viewership numbers by over a million and securing an eye-popping 3.5 in the advertiser coveted 18-49 age group.

If this scenario sounds a bit familiar to you, it’s because Fox did almost the same things with their 2013 breakout supernatural drama ‘Sleepy Hollow,’ which stars actress Nicole Beharie. The show’s initial ratings were through the roof, and after lots of great reviews the show was renewed after airing only three episodes. Fast forward a season and a half and Fox is not so sure now if it wants to bring the show back for a third season, based in part on fan criticism and dwindling ratings.

According to Fox TV chairman and CEO Dana Walden, the network is holding off on renewing ‘Sleepy Hollow,’ but is excited about “creative changes” the show is implementing in order to make it more episodic and less serialized. Walden also said the show went through a “diagnostic process” midseason and that they expect the implemented changes to “return the fun” back to ‘Sleepy Hollow.’

There are also rumors of the show being paired with ‘Empire’ as its lead-in. After looking to white males to lift up the show, i.e. Tom Mison and Matt Barr, it appears Fox may now turn to actress Nicole Beharie in hopes she can help do for them what Kerry Washington and Viola Davis have done for ABC.
