Actress Gabourey Sidibe is covering the latest edition (March 2010) of Ebony Magazine. The breakout star of Lee Daniels’ latest Oscar contender talks about her new movie role opposite Zoe Kravitz and why no matter what anyone says she still celebrates being “different.”

Excerpts:

Gabourey on living up to Hollywood standards of beauty:

“I don’t try to live up to the standards of Hollywood or any of that – I know that I’m different and I celebrate it. In a weird way, I kind of really, really love being the alien in the room. I dig it.”

Gabourey on how she came to be an actress:

“I thought I’d be a receptionist my whole life, and I wanted to be a psychologist. This just kind of fell in my lap. It’s very strange. It wasn’t what I planned to be in life, but certainly it’s happened in such a big way and I do plan to act more.”

Gabourey on what type of role she wants to play next:

“I would like to be funny in a film, or I’d like to be a romantic lead. They’re all dream roles. There’s nothing specifically that I want, I just want everything.”

  1. FIERCE!!! LOVE THIS BISH!!!! HOPW SHE CONTINUES ON HER WEIGHT LOSS…IF I WAS’NT WORRIED ABOUT HER HEATH, I WOULD NOT CARE…ALSO KEEP DOING MOVIES GIRL!!!!

  2. weight loss? I didn’t read anything about her losing weight. I mean, I think she needs to, but I don’t think this girl is keen on losing weight any time soon until she is essentially “forced” to.

  3. Yes, she has loss a bit of weight, i heard that on the radio

  4. Agree with Lmao!!!!

  5. oh I didn’t know that… good for her then!

  6. I wish her the best.

  7. Yes she has lost weight. So I give her props. Have you seen Precious ? She was huge in that movie. 2 years later, she is not the same size. I mean she still big, but not as big as she was then.
So at least she’s making an effort, but at the same time she still seems confident.

I hope she continues her healthy weight journey.
    The cover looks nice !!

  8. She’s great but Hollywood is not gong to be throwing roles her away. That’s unfortunate. She also needs to lose weight for her health you can’t feel good about yourself dead.

  9. She looks fabulous! Whoever styled her for this shoot needs to take the reigns for her Oscar appearance.

  10. you need to hit the gym, too young to be that fat..

  11. yes Angel, she is too young to be that overweight. point blank period. although i wish her the best, i don’t think Hollywood will be checking for her that much. mainly because of her weight. but i could be wrong…

  12. 70% percent of black women are overweight, so why don’t we all focus on our own weight less journey and leave gabby to hers.

  13. Okay she’s huuuuge,i got it thanks to all the dieticians with eyes, Anywho, she killed that role, unfortunately she will be typed cast. Sorry gAbby, don’t see an romantic lead ones coming your way-not in hollyweird anyway.

  14. Yeah ruserious. She said it was a “dream role”.

SO I guess “only” in her dreams will she get that romantic lead
She seems to want a lot of things

  15. I think she can get a role..I would love a story about

“A OVERWEIGHT WOMAN FINDS LOVE”…It unrealistic, but cool…

I think she is FAB, so what if she is overweight, we are all not perfect..

  16. Here we go, being judgmental and attempting to disguise it with your “concern for her health”. Yeah, right. If Nikki Blonsky and America Ferrera (she’s lost weight NOW)can have lead roles as plus-sized actresses and Queen Latifah, Monique, Loretta Devine, Rosie O’Donnell, Camryn Mayheim and Roseanne Barr preceded them – WHY IS IT IMPOSSIBLE THAT THIS YOUNG LADY CAN NEVER BE CAST AS A ROMANTIC LEAD?

It’s ironic, WE don’t like to be judged and discriminated against by others BUT MOST of us find it extremely easy to discriminate against someone because of their differences. As an actress, I am not concerned with her weight (because that’s an issue that over 60% of Americans can’t seem to conquer), my only focus is can she effectively transcend the boundaries of the role she is cast to portray.

  17. I agree with Sepiastar there is no specific picture indicating that beauty is a specific style and size. Only an openminded and mature individual would understand that beauty comes in all colors, shapes, and sizes. I think that we should stick to facts that she did her thing in the film Precious and yes I can definately see her in a Romantic film or a Comedy…Maybe even a Romantic Comedy :o)…Either way lets not be closed minded, ignorant, and disguising it with a concern for her health…How do you know that she’s unhealthy…atleast she’s happy in her own skin and knows what she wants out of life…;o)

  18. Loving Gabby and all her glory. So tired of the plastic society that claims you can only exist if you are thin. This is reality people. Everyone is not skinny and fat people fall in love everyday. I sure would like to see some pictures of some of you that sit behind computer screens spouting health concerns. Thin doesn’t mean healthy folk. My mom works in the health industry and I have volunteered in it for years. Seen some thin folk suffering from high bllod pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. YES, thin folk.

  19. Wow, it’s weird that so many people who don’t know Gabourey are so concerned about her health.. That’s a load of bull, and you know it.
If she was thin, but a closet drug user, or alcoholic, would you post comments about being worried about her health?? I don’t think so!
Those of you who use the “health” excuse in your reasons for her to lose weight should just admit that you find fat repulsive and quit hiding behind the “health” excuse.
At least be honest with yourselves.
