Gabrielle Talks Love, Career & Being A Survivor

Actress Gabrielle Union is featured on the cover of the June 30th. edition of Page Six Magazine and opens up about her career, why her marriage failed and why she blames the gossip blogs for keeping her dateless. Gabrielle, who is starring alongside Eddie Murphy is the new movie ‘Meet Dave”, continues to deny rumors that she is dating good friend Derek Jeter as well as Kid Rock and says internet gossip blogs paint her love life as being more active than it is, which she believes causes potential suitors to run the other way. Rarely talked about, Gabrielle also delves into the brutal rape and beating she endured that left her unrecognizable and hospitalized for months.

Interview Snippet:

She makes jokes about her strength and what she is and isn’t capable of, but Gabrielle’s been through a lot in her 35 years—including a devastating attack. As a 19-year-old college student, she was raped at gunpoint and beaten beyond recognition during a night shift working at a Payless ShoeSource. “I blanked out and had an out-of-body experience, like I was hovering above seeing this horrible thing happen to someone else—not me,” says Gabrielle, who got through the trauma partly because of an episode of the Oprah Winfrey Show she had seen days before on victims of violent crimes. After her ordeal, she immediately turned to UCLA’s Rape Treatment Center. “It gave me my life back,” she says. “My dignity and self-esteem were gone and they helped me find them again. That’s why I now lobby for state legislatures across the country to help raise funds and awareness for rape crisis centers, and I speak to college girls about what happened to me. My goal is to never hear the words ‘me too’ from someone after I say ‘I was raped.’ ”

    I READ ABOUT HER RAPE IN ESSENCE MAGAZINE. I THINK SHE’S REALLY BRAVE FOR COMING OUT ABOUT THAT. SHE WILL PROBABLY BE AN INSPIRATION FOR OTHER WOMEN AND GIRLS WHO HAVE WENT THROUGH THE SAME THING.

    Gabrielle always seemed like the kind of person that you wouldn’t mind hanging with and this article proves just that. She seems down to Earth. She is a beautiful sista. Good for her to be able to talk about something so personal, sharing her story will definitely help others.

    And the pictures are beautiful! @ Nne: that’s my favorite one too!

    Bless her heart and her tenacity. Dealing with rape is not an easy task. Gabrielle is beautiful inside and out, and I’m sure she will find a wonderful partner one day.

    I really like Gabrielle Union. I really wish she were in more stuff. That picture of her sitting down is so beautiful–I want one of those done of me! LOL!

    I think it’s great that she’s talking to other women about her rape–a lot of women never open up about it because it’s just too painful and some are embarrassed. I can’t imagine. :-(

    @dark sista,

    Typical celebrity, they always want attention on their terms when its about promotion, money or furthering their career.
