It’s About To Be A Girl Fight !

2007 is shaping up to be the year of the comeback diva and Mary J. Blige has officially thrown her hat into the ring. Mary’s new CD, Growing Pains, is due to hit record store shelves on November 20th, the same day as Mariah Carey and Foxy Brown. To make things even more interesting, the week before, November 13th, will see Alicia Keys, Britney Spears, and Celine Dion go head to head for the number one position, as their new CD’s will drop on the same day as well. As you all know CD release dates are subject change at any time (just ask Mya), but I don’t think any of the above artists, not even Foxy, will have their release dates moved forward or pushed back.

Alicia, Britney and Celine have all shown that they can produce big first week numbers, so it will be interesting to see who comes out on top. Celine is the older of the three and has been MIA from the music biz for quite a few years now. She had a baby and has been performing in Vegas and Vegas is like where big stars go to perform when they can’t sell music anymore (see Toni Braxton). I’m not saying Celine can’t make a come back, only that I think she will have the hardest time. I predict she’ll come in behind both Britney and Alicia.

As for Britney, she’ll be #1. Her crazed fans will buy 10 copies of her album if they have to and those suburban brats can absolutely afford to. Look for her to sell over 700,000 in the first week.

I will of course be rooting for Alicia. I love her new single and I love her as a person and an artist. She has a connection with her fans and that media that will help her sell extremely well. I see her doing over 500,000 in the first week.

However, the most interesting of all the diva battles will be the one going down on November 20th. Mary will go head to head with the #1 selling female artist of all time, Mariah Carey. Now this is so interesting because Mariah has never went Gold (500,000 copies) in the first week as many other female artists have (Janet Jackson, Beyonce, Ashanti, ext, ext).

The Emancipation of Mimi sold 403,755 copies in it’s first week, whereas The Breakthrough sold a whopping 727,000 copies in the first week. Mary came outta nowhere and really shocked people with those numbers. She broke all types of records with that CD and officially proved that she could be a force to reckon with on the charts.

So- who will take the #1 spot? I can’t really say until I hear the first single from both ladies, but I think Mary could pull an upset due to the fact that Mariah can’t seem to get past the 300-400,000 mark in the first week.Over the long haul Mariah may be able to outsell Mary but in the first week, I think Mary has shown that with the right single she can go head to head with any artist- and that includes Mariah- who my gut now tells me will come in behind Mary.

So what do you guys think? Take our Poll Of The Day and tell us who you think will come in at #1.

A week ago I would have said Britney too but I’m not so sure now. Her performance at the VMA’s took a lot of life out of her comeback. The digital single for Gimme More is out October 2. If it does well then I think Brit’s fans are still with her and her album will be number one. Alicia will definitely sell more than Celine though. Does Celine even have a song out? As for Mary and Mariah I can’t say just yet. Mary’s big first week may have just been a fluke. I still can’t believe she sold that much and I doubt she can do it again. If I had to put money on it I would have to go with Mariah who will sell at least 400 thousand in the first week. I can’t fathom Mary doing that again and so quickly after the release of her last album. She needs for time off if you ask me. She is rolling back out too quickly. The public may not want more Mary right now.

I concurr with Dana on this one…at least Beyonce isn’t releasing something within the same month.

Most people will get both Mimi & Mary. The winner will depend on who has the bigger single at the time of release. Should be good either way.

Celine has a new single out since last week. Maybe you guys are not big Celine’s fans but during the first day alone, she was ranked #3 in bestsellers on amazon.com and the album is not out yet. She is already ranked #1in vocal pop category and pop category so… Remember this girl always sells. After she gave birth to her son in 2002, her new album went straight to number one and she has been absent for 2 years so. Also she just had a French album last May and of course it went straight to number one in every French speaking country.

I think Celine will be number one and Britney number 2 because history shows that Pop always sells more than RnB.

Jill Scott’s album comes out September 25. Can that sista ever get some love?

Everytime I post about Jill Scott the posts go un commented on. I hear crickets chirping. But I just did 2 posts on her album, one of them last week I believe.

Stephanie, I know you do and that’s sad! What happened to all the “brothas and sistas” on this site that continously talk about wanting more meaningful music from black artists and less booty shaking? This is a sista that looks Black and is a representation of the Black experience and she gets NO LOVE! The next time someone rants on about Beyonce’s booty shaking or style of dress, they need to think about using that energy and time to leave a post on Jill Scott or Angie Stone…

So many Black people are full of SH*T!

You know what Des, I started to write that earlier but decided not to. But seeing as how you brought it up, I will co-sign. I got my hands on a 16 minute sampler of Jill’s upcoming album and couldn’t wait to post it. I was excited and thought the people who come here would be too. That post got 2 comments. I kept it on the front page for an entire week and two lousy comments was all it garnered. I remember thinking had that been a 16 minute sampler of Beyonce’s new CD it would have had hundreds of comments, and mostly from people claiming to be tired of her. So I learned a long time ago that people complain for the sake of complaining and when you give them what they claim they want, you discover they really don’t want it at all.

I also posted about Angie not long ago and again, nothing. Honestly, I don’t like posting things that end up with a big fat 0 comments shown beside them. It looks bad and most blogs feel the same way. When they see certain people being ignored they pull back on posting them because people are showing no interest.

    Sad but true…

I will get Mary and Mimi albums when they come out. As far as guessing who would be the #1 seller, like others have said it all depends on their first single. But then again you can’t just go by the single, you have to go by the fan base too. Obviously there are alot more MJ fans than there are MC, that’s why her album sold more. Mariah had great songs but Mary has songs that people can really relate too. Mary nor Mariah need time off, but if Mary can outsell Mimi once than she can surely outsell her twice.

Jill Scott has a great voice, but I never really was a fan of hers. I always wanted to see her in movies though, so I can’t wait to see how she acts. I’m sure she’s great.

The only one I’ll be picking up for sure is Alicia Keys. I have never purchased a Mariah album and haven’t purchased a Mary CD since her last live album she released about ten years ago. Foxy doesn’t stand a chance. She won’t even sell 100,000 copies. Who cares about Britney and Celine and I cast my vote for Mary. Mariah never has a huge opening and probably never will.

This may sound strange, but I think that Mariah will do better than last time because she sorta recaptured her original fan base. When she started doing the R/B type albums that displeased a lot of mainstream people, but a nice solid ballad (we belong together) sorta solidified her again.
Looking at the dismal record sales so far, I am really looking forward to for these real divas.
Umm would it be bad if I dont consider Britney a diva?I think she will sell for shock value. I wouldn’t be surprised if she comes in at #1, then drops off like the week after.

Here’s my prediction for Nov 13th-
    1. Alicia (cuz I figure if IM buying it, and I am ms. frugal, then lotsa other people will too lol)
    2. Britney (shock value)
    3. Celine (people might wait to hear what other people say first…Alicia and Brit have dropped singles…has Celine ?)

    Nov 20-
    1. Mariah
    2. MJB
    3. Foxy

    Just my prediction though!

I just started checking out this site about a week ago. If I had been coming on earlier, I totally would’ve commented on the post about Ms. Jill Scott. I luv her!!

I can’t stomach Mariah so hopefully Mary will win in record sells but I don’t really care either way cause even though I like Mary, I haven’t purchased one of her albums since…. like….. 2002?!

I think Alicia will do very well with her album sells- I have to see if I’ll purchase her album. I like her but I’m really picky with my music and the artist I love and support.

I am anticipating the Alicia Keys CD! To me she always delivers and has always come in number one with all of CDs, including the unplugged album. Her current single is already #10 on billboard R&B Hip Hop (3weeks) and #71 on the hot 100 with the video coming tommorrow and it is number one on itunes R&B I see her picking up momentum. As for Britney if she does come in at #1 it would just go to show how messed up the game really is. I’m not spending my hard earned money for shock value or for the person who has the most write ups in the tabloids. The people who do have issues and I wouldn’t even feel bad if I came in second to that cause what can you do about shallow crazy people who are going to end up sticking that CD at the back of their collection in embarassment at spending their money on it. Mariah will outsell Mary hands down. Mary had a great single last time around to me that is the (mainstream) album of her career. I do not see her topping that. To me her best album is still my life and I have both along with two of her other CD’s. Foxy shouldn’t even waste her time. Celine will sell but she will not be number one.

Speaking of Jill Scott she will be up against Keyshia Cole and Jagged Edge. I personally didn’t get into the “living my life like its golden era”, so it is going to be hard for me to automatically slap down my 10.59 @ best buy! But I like the two songs I’ve heard so far. Yet, I liked keyshia’s last CD (along with what I’ve heard so far) and Jagged has always given me a few songs to put on repeat, although they’ll prob only sell like 95,000 which would be die hard fans, cause I don’t know what their current single is all about!

listing the ones I think would have a possibility of doing some numbers on september 25th
    Melissa Etheridge
    Foo Fighters
    Will i Am
Jordin Sparks is also coming out on november 20th

I’m listening to Keyshia right now I really do not like the song with short dog to much going on plus seems like his rap goes on forever but digging Fallin Out! I’m definitely purchasing the Keyshia CD

Best of luck to all of the artist. You never really know what’s going to happen with each cd an artists puts out. one album you love the next you may feel you’ve wasted your money(and vice versa)Once the competitive spirit leaves, music is wonderful. I love music from classical to hip hop.

I can tell this site really is for black performers. Of course Celine has a single out, it’s just you guys are not pop music fans. The album was ranked #3 on amazon.com for pre-order the first day it came out last week, it’s not even out yet. Anyway, Celine is a worldwide star and like all her previous albums which went number one in every country in Europe, Latin America, and Japan, there’s nothing to worry about her. She’ll do fine since her fanbase is the world. I am from a small country in Africa myself and she is the best selling female artist there so…

I still think Britney will be in the top 2. But as you said, you never know because 50 cents thought he’ll be number one all along and he’s not even number 2 so…

Albums I will be buying fo’ sho’:

    Alicia Keys
    Mariah Carey
    Jill Scott

And I think Mariah might sell MORE than Mary, but as someone pointed out; it depends on the strength of each single. Currently, I’m loving the heck out of Alicia’s “No One” and Keyshia’s “Let it Go”. I probably won’t buy her or Mary’s album—will just download select songs. As for the three ladies mentioned above, I ‘collect’ their stuff :)

Arggghh, I just posted and it didn’t show up. I’m glad someone mentioned Jill Scott…you have ‘reminded’ me to add her new record to my wish list. I’ll definitely be buying Jill, Alicia and Mariah. Keyshia and Mary, I’ll download what I like. Currently, I’m loving the heck out of Alicia’s “No One” and Keyshia’s “Let it Go”. Love those songs; look forward to Mary and Mariah’s single cuts. ;)

Miriah will win that war I think. Mary doesn’t have as much cross over power as she does. I love Mary but it’s just the truth. Mary should either push it up or wait till after the baby is born and enjoy that anyway. Miriah shuts down music stores and Mary lost her top spot the second week to Jamie Foxx last album so it says alot about her pull. She’s not broad enough in being a DOUBLE THREAT to market herself across the board. I love her though don’t get me wrong.

At the end of the day the only names that is recognised worldwide is Mary J, Mariah , Alicia, Celine and Britney as for the others people will ask who? Mary will always be my girl - she is firmly grounded, Jill Scott the same. Mariah is not anybody to go crazi over she always screeches in her songs and go on about her octaves, Alicia should be ok as she attracts different types / class of people. But at the end of the day I’m into those who keeps it real and dont sell their souls and their culture to be recognised with Mary you feel her pain and her joy so I will buy Mary’s album when it is release - as I have all of her albums. You go Mary God Bless You!!!!!!!!!!!
