J-Hud, Latifah and Alicia To Work Together

Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson and Oscar-nominees Queen Latifah and Sophie Okonedo have been signed to star in Fox Searchlight’s big screen adaptation of Sue Monk Kidd’s best-selling 2003 novel “The Secret Life of Bees.” Jennifer will play the friend of the film’s central character, Lily Owens, a 14-year-old girl who escapes her lonely life and troubled relationship with her father by running away with her caregiver and only friend to a South Carolina town where she is taken in by a trio of bee-keeping sisters. The film is set in South Carolina in 1964. Latifah and Okonedo will play two of the sisters, while singer-actress Alicia Keys is in talks to play the third. Variety reports Dakota Fanning is in talks to star as the 14-year-old girl.

Gina Prince-Bythewood (“Love & Basketball”) will direct from her own script. The film will be produced by Lauren Shuler Donner, Jack Leslie and James Lassiter. Will Smith and Joe Pichirallo are also set to handle producing duties. Filming is to begin next month in North Carolina, and will be released later in 2008.

  8. i am happy for alicia! that makes two new movie deals for her…first the lena horne biopic and now a new york times best seller adaptation…and for miss latifah i LOVE that woman!!! she is a multifaceted talent and i wish her much success in the furture!!! and for miss hudson i am THRILLED for her that she is doing big things! that’s THREE new movies for her!!! i bet you she kisses that OSCAR everyday before she goes to an audition!!! and that dakota fanning is as adorable as a button but a true blossoming hollywood talent…i hope she can manage to stay away from the sex scandals and drugs and all the vices that plague hollywood’s young stars!!! and as for the moderator i am pleased that you removed the comment of the person above…it’s bad enough that every black female get’s compared to beyonce, but here is a chance for three people to get their shine which has absolutely NOTHING to do with beyonce but we are forced to see her name splashed across every thread by some stan who has nothing better to do! THANK YOU!!!! and again kudos to three very talented, classy black women!!!

SIDENOTE: alicia better work!!! her album sales after six weeks stands at 2.35 million copies!!! i’m so happy!!! and i look forward to her new movie!!!!!

  10. I’ve never heard of the book but this sounds like a really good drama movie. I can’t belive Dakota Fanning is growing up so fast. Looking foward to the movie.

  11. hate to be cynical, but I’m not a fan of Queen Latifah’s acting…sorry…I think it’s got more to do with the roles she’s chosen over the years…the best she’s ever done IMO was in “Set it Off” and I think that’s because she was comfortable 😐 Get it?

Anyway, I am definitely looking forward to seeing Jennifer and Sophie Okonedo.
I was only impressed with Anika Noni Rose’s performance in “Dreamgirls” so I was a bit underwhelmed with the Jennifer Hudson carnival last year…that was, until I saw stills from the “Sex and the City” movie…I mean, her face looked completely different, physically the same, but different…she was in character…and I realized, wow…this girl CAN act! I can’t wait to see “Winged Creatures,” ensemble casts and stories told in vignettes are my fav!
As for Alicia, I know she’s been acting for a while, but I’m always one for undiscovered talent, actresses who have studied the art and yet have never been given a chance. But, Congrats…

  12. Hello,,,,this is Keep it REEL,,,I do not consider this to be a mammy movie. This movie is set in circa 1964. All of the actress involved has very good qualities for this movie. Queen Latifah is a very good actress. I loved her in the movie Chicago. She has played comedy and drama (Set It Off).
I just recently saw Dream Girls. The movie was good. Jennifer Hudson did an excently job for her acting debut. I abosolutly loved Anika Noni Rose. I would love to see her on broadway in anything. And yes Bey did an ok job, but truly not Oscar worthy!!!!!!
Alicia Keys is an ok actress, she has a long way to go. And Dakota Fanning will eventually win an Oscar, because she is a really good actress. I am looking forward to the movie.

  13. Alrighty keepitreal :brownsista: its a quick read…shouldnt take too long to get through.

  14. to those who wish to doubt latifah’s acting talent…just watch reruns of “living single” and watch “hairspray” and “chicago” and “set it off”…not only can she ACT but she can SING! i was really blown away by her voice in hairspray…she’s by no means an aretha but she has been doing us an injustice by not singing more…it’s a pity her album wasn’t very well received by consumers because it was critically praised!!!

  15. i’ve also watched dream girls on cable and j.hud was probably born to be an actress/singer it was her first movie but her attitude was rigth on it she was in her character thumbs up for her and i agree that queen latifah can sing i would even say that she is a better singer than actress ,sophie okonedo made me cry and laugh in hotel rwanda she was great and i find her really talented and beautiful [african women are the most beautiful if you ask me  ]

  16. I never read the book but this sounds like a good movie and real talented stars in it.

“keepitreal” your comment was so stupid and ignorant, it’s people like you that make this site look bad. You sound like you have a problem with your own race, keepitfake suits you better.

  17. The movie sounds good!! Since some of you giving good reviews on the book i ‘ll go to the local barnes@ nobel and pick it up.

i also agree Queen Latifiah doing her thang ! A lot of people are sleeping on her

  18. I love Queen Latifah.

Jennifer Hudson is smart and is picking very good supporting movie roles. It looks like she will have a successful movie career and do the music thing a little later. I don’t blame her. The music business is all about visuals and image anyway. Her winning that Oscar award and picking movie roles along side seasoned actresses and actors just puts her in a whole new league. You go girl.

AGAIN…THEY SHOULD TAKE A BREAK LIKE YOU SAY BEYONCE SHOULD DO! ALL THESE SISTERS ARE WORKING…WHY CANT BEYONCE…..SUCH HATERS!

  20. I AM STILL IN SHOCK THAT ROTATING YOUR NECK, POPPING YOUR GUM, AND DOING THE FAT-BLACK-MAMMY ROLL IS ACTING!!!!!! ANGELA BASSIT IS SOMEWHERE THROWING UP! JENNIFER HUDSON NEVER IMPRESSED ME IN DREAM GIRLS…I HAVE SEEN THAT MAMMY ROLL IN EVERY HOOD MOVIE. IF THATS THE CASE WHY DIDN’T THELMA FROM GOODTIMES GET AN EMMY FOR HER ROLE AS THE “BLACK SISTA GIRL! GIVE ME A M*THA’ *UCKIN’ BREAK!
