Janelle Monae Designs for Refinery 29
If you thought Janelle Monae’s best fashion days were behind her, think again. The Electric Lady performer hit up the premiere of Refinery29’s 29 Rooms showcase in New York City last night, where she not only showed up, but showed out. The recently turned 32 chanteuse wowed photogs in an eye-catching Minnie-Mouse meets Space Barbie get-up, which she paired with simple Spiga boots and a clutch from the Charlotte Olympia Multi-Face Collection.
Janelle has become a designer favorite since she branched out into movies and retired her tuxedo uniform a few years back. She often crafts her more outrageous costumes, which is most likely why Refinery29 tapped her to design a room in their New York City showcase, which opens today and runs through December 14th.
Janelle told fans via Instagram her costume above goes along with the room she designed for the exhibit, which is titled What’s Your Frequency. It reportedly deals with the government’s abuse of power and citizen’s lack of privacy. How Janelle’s costume ties in with the theme of her room is anyone’s guess, but hey, it’s Janelle’s fantasy world and we’re all just kinda standing back laughing at it. LOL.
