R n’ B singer Janelle Monae has landed the third lead alongside Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer in the Fox 2000 sci-fi drama Hidden Figures. The film is based on the true life story of Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan, three black female mathematicians who helped provide NASA with the raw data they needed to launch John Glenn and his fellow astronauts into space.

The story is adapted from Margot Lee Shetterley’s upcoming book Hidden Figures: The Story of the African-Women Who Helped Win the Space Race, which is set to be published this September by HarperCollins.

Janelle will play the youngest of the three, Mary Jackson, Taraji will play Katherine Johnson and Octavia will play Dorothy Vaughan.

This is Janelle’s second film role. She recently wrapped shooting on Moonlight, Brad Pitt’s latest Plan B production.
