Janet fans have speculated for months now that Janet would leave Virgin Records for Island Def Jam and that appears to be exactly what is happening. 20 Y.O was Janet’s last album under contract with Virgin and now reports are circulating that L.A. Reid, President of IDJ, is down in Miami personally overseeing the new album which is rumored to have production from long time collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, as well as Pharell and Ne-Yo. No word yet whether Jermaine Dupri, Janet’s boyfriend, will be contributing tracks to the new project.
Many people blame J.D for the failure of 20 Y.0 but I do not agree. Damita Jo failed as well and Jermaine had no hand in that album at all.
Janet’s problems are corporate related. 20 Y.O in my opinion was a very good album and Damita Jo was a work of art. However, neither was embraced by pop radio, MTV OR VH-1.
Janet’s wardrobe malfunction at the Superbowl put her at odds with a corporate giant that owns over 200 radio and television stations. MTV’s own president, a Black woman, kicked dirt on Janet last year by stating no one likes Janet anymore and that is why they don’t play her.
So until Janet’s handlers realize that they must somehow make nice with Viacom, Janet will continue to be ignored by the very people who made her. Janet can’t make it without video stations and pop radio. Janet is not an R n’ B artist and hasn’t been since the Control era.
Call up the head of Viacom, invite him out to lunch, bake him a cake- just do something-anything- that will get Janet back on pop radio, MTV and VH1.
