Janet Jackson Scores #1 On Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Chart
Less than two weeks before R&B superstar Janet Jackson’s eagerly awaited new album, “20 Y.O.,” hits stores, the lead single, “Call on Me,” has claimed the Number One slot on “Billboard’s” Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart, which is based on a combination of radio airplay and sales.
The Janet/Nelly duet is the music icon’s 15th Number One and 30th Top 10 single on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Janet is now tied with R. Kelly for scoring the most Top 10 singles since “Billboard” began compiling its information from Nielsen SoundScan data in 1992. She tops the R&B chart, in existence for 64 years, ahead of all artists since 1984.
The second single from “20 Y.O.,” the steamy dance-pop track “So Excited,” hearkens back to Janet’s career-making 1986 album “Control.” The track, which features rapper Khia, hit radio on August 28th, while a sexy companion video clip, lensed by award-winning director, Joseph Kahn, debuted on BET’s “Access Granted.”
On September 25th, the day before “20 Y.O.” is released, Janet will appear on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” to chat with Oprah and sing “So Excited.” She will also excite hundreds of fans in New York City when she performs three songs on NBC’s “The Today Show” on September 29th.
In addition, look for Janet this month on the covers of “W,” “FHM,” “Giant,” “Ebony,” and “Billboard” magazines.

I’m happy for Janet cause she deserves it.I hope her album does well cause both Christina, Justin and Beyonce have had albums sell very well.Justin is predicted to sell about 700,000 next week and Beyonce sold over 541,000.Hopefully Janet can sell at least 400,000 to show that she still has it in her to sell even without the support of VH1, MTV and most pop radio stations.

I can usually predict how an album will sell but Janet has me stumped.She is getting major publicity but the video play and airplay is moderate to low.Only BET shows the video and only r and b stations played Call On Me.I think name recognition alone will cause Janet to sell at least 300,000 but after that I just don’t know. :neutral:

Call On Me went #1 because Virgin released a cd single and sold it for like 99 cent.Beyonce’s record company did the same and Mariah’s company did this too to help try and push one of her singles to #1.
COM never took off at pop radio but increased steadily and got good airplay at r&b stations.Virgin messed up by releasing the digital download at the wrong time.
Janet has also hurt herself by not performing one single from the album yet and it is 2 weeks away from being released.Why release COM knowing you won’t have Nelly available to perform it with you?
Beyonce has been performing her singles for months now and Janet won’t start until the day before the album is released when she performs on Oprah.Why is she waiting so long to support this album?
I think the songs are damn good and I have already pre-ordered it on I-tunes but she is messing herself up and so is Virgin.COM was not first single material and Janet is not performing enough to sell the album to the public.
Janet will sell well in the first week but after that it is going to be a fight.She is just being really lazy if you ask me.

I love Janet as a performer. She will do just as good if not better than Beyonce and Justin. She definitely have her own fan base that has been riding with her for 20 years and some new ones, she will do excellent with sales.

I absolutely love Janet’s new album. Her first 3 albums, starting with “Control” will always be considered her classic albums. This ablum certainly has been her best in recent years. “Damita Jo”, “All for You” and “The Velvet Rope” weren’t disappointments and demand a certain respect but this album has Janet on top of her game. Honestly! Call on me and So excited aren’t strong singles and that will her Janet’s fading popularity. Mtv’s cruel punishment with refusing to support Janet is unfair. After all Justin has contributed to the superbowl fiasco and he hasn’t suffered one bit. In fact I’m sure Mtv wants to declare him as the new king of pop - even after Usher’s success. Janet has loyal fans and I’m sure they stand behind her but her promotion stinks! Her album along with beyonce’s are the best of the year. Letoya’s is decent. Danity Kane’s is really good(from start to finish). Which album’s best is hard to say. It’s sort of like Janet’s(yin) to Beyonce’s(yang), aggression and gentleness. Those albums are very different but equally compelling.
