R n’ B newcomer Jazmine Sullivan is poised to have a breakout year. The 21 year old singer, who signed her first record deal at the age of 16 only to be subsequently dropped, has been nominated for five Grammys- the most for any female artist this year. Jazmine’s first single, Need You Bad, went to #1 on the R n’ B charts, but the singer has still struggled for name recognition in an industry that no longer rewards artists who can actually sing and write their own music. However, like India Arie a few years back, Jazmine is about to discover that just being nominated for a Grammy can turn one’s career around. Being nominated for 5 can instantly make you a household name and most of all, send your album flying up the charts. Jazmine has been nominated for Best New Artist, the most coveted award for a new singer. She also recieved nods for Best Contemporary R&B Album, Best Female R&B Vocal, Best Traditional R&B Vocal, and Best R&B Song for Bust Your Windows.

Jazmine will walk away with a few because Alicia Keys isn’t nominated. Alicia won all the awards besting India Arie who later complained that the Academy was biased in favor of Alicia.

Congrats to Jazmine I hope that she collects a @ least 1 award. But I wouldn’t want to compare her to India. I remeber that award show very clearly. India didn’t even get a sip of what winning a Grammy felt like. A keys hogged all the water. India took that defeat hard, Stevie(Wonder) had to give the girl comfort. You know to this day I think that India still has a salty taste in her mouth about that. I am sure that she has pushed on, but even when u push on, you never forget. I also believe that that moment is what has pushed India to make some of the records she has made. It seem like after that Grammy show her demeanor changed a tad. Funny how instances in our life can change our whole out look. Needless to say, India is known, but the name is still not a household like A keys( go figure). However I hope Jazmine much success & even tho it is nice to have that Grammy, I hope she doesn’t put that much emphasis on the award. The industry is picky & sides w/ their favs sometimes. Maybe if India did that, she might not have been so upset…

I’m happy she’s nominated but what about our other brownsistas from my side of the pond like Estelle ( Record of the Year… or is it song of the year, am not sure) and best new artists and Leona Lewis. Leona is a rare rare talent with a killer set of pipes. I hope she wins her awards as with Estelle and M.I.A. They may not b brown sistas but I hope Duffy and Adele do well to. :bowdown:

I saw her in concert last month and she is the truth. Her voice is so amazing. She is one of those few recording artisist that sounds better live than the cd. Like Whitney was back in the day. Who can totally change up a song and make it better live. That is called a songstress.
I’m am loving this girl!!! I just got her CD yesterday because I’m sooo in love with “Bust your windows” that I had to go ahead and buy it. I keep that song on repeat and sing along to it in my car like I’m in concert. :thumbsup: I give the people driving around me a live performance. :lol: I actually didn’t like JS when I first heard her on “Need You Bad” because I thought she was a Lauryn Hill wanna-be, but there is so much soul and passion in her voice that I believe she is the real deal. I love the raspiness in her voice. Whether she wins the grammys or not, the girl is the truth and I hope she knows that. She sings with so much passion that I’m shocked to read that she’s only 21. I wish Jazmine the best! Congratulations to her on her nominations!! Her CD is one of the best of the year and it stays on heavy rotation in my car. “I’m In Love With Another Man” is one of my favorite songs on the album and I would love to hear her sing that live.
I am betting that she win at least four/best new artist is always tight because it is against a broader category

Congrats to her! I love her and her CD, and I think she’s the kind of artists music needs more of. She’s got some real talent and it’s not from the studio either. I’ll be cheering for her. I think she’s the best I’ve seen in a while and she’s certainly on my top list right now.

Go Jazz and Jennifer!!!! I always been a Jazmine fan. I am from across the river from Philly(camden, nj) so before people knew of her, I already did and has been tooting her own for a minute. I am glad to see this talented woman get her due thus though I don’t know if I would consider her contemporary R&B. She is more traditional than contemporary.
However, she is an awesome vocalist and great songwriter. I hope for even bigger things for her in the future.
BTW, Alicia got robbed only getting 2 nominations. That’s ridiculous. :thumbsdown:
