NBC revealed plans last week to bring Jennifer on for a multi-episode arc when their hit show “Smash” returns in September.
According to Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment, “Smash showcases some of the greatest musical talent in the business and that is a fitting description for Oscar, Golden Globe and Grammy winning singer Jennifer Hudson.”
Jennifer will reportedly play a character named Veronica Moore, a Broadway star who has “reached her dream, but also paid a price for it.”
According to Hit Fix, news of Jennifer’s casting was such a big deal it managed to solicit a blurb from executive producer Steven Spielberg: “First ‘Dreamgirls,’ now ‘Smash.’ I have no doubt Jennifer will continue to deliver even more inspiration to the audience responsible for giving us a second season on NBC. It’s wonderful to be reunited with her at DreamWorks Television and NBC.”
“Smash,” which is undergoing a variety of changes in both cast and creative team, won’t return to NBC until midseason, which works out well for Jennifer, who is planning to shoot “Lullaby” and “The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete” this summer.
