Jurnee Smollett Lands New Role

According to IMDB via Shadow & Act, actress Jurnee Smollett is set to star in “Blondie: The Florence Ballard Story.” This story comes as somewhat of a shock to me considering Faith Evans told Wendy Williams just last year she had been handpicked by Florence’s daughter, Michelle Ballard-Chapman, to play the role.

For those of you not in the know, Ballard was the founding member of the The Supremes and the original lead singer before being replaced by Diana Ross. Following bouts with her weight and depression she was removed from the group by Barry Gordy and eventually died of cardiac arrest at the tender age of 32.

The character of Effie from the 1980s Broadway play, and subsequent 2006 movie “Dreamgirls,” was loosely based on the life of Ballard and her eventual falling out with both Ross and Gordy.

The film is set to be shot in Atlanta, Georgia and will be produced and distributed by Ballard’s daughter and Spirit of Life Films.

  1. great for her! but @sista- maybe they decided to go with an actress, and also someone who may look closer to the original singers age?
with that said, can jurnee sing? (will singing be needed ?!)

  2. jurnee can sing. i heard her sing lena horne’s stormy weather. i love faith, but i am just happy to see the film is gonna be done.

  3. Good to know Jurnee can sing…she’s such a good actress…I would love to see her in such a wonderful role…I”m sure she’ll do well! I like Faith, but I like when producers get away from names and go with the best actor for the job, not that Faith can’t act!

I hope this film doesn’t go straight to dvd…does well at the film festivals…it happens!

  4. Good decision? Faith Evans is a bit fat and kind of a has been.

  5. IM JUST GLAD A FILM ABOUT FLORENCE IS BEING MADE NO MATTER WHO PLAYS HER.

  6. Congrats to Jurnee she is my daughter’s twin so I have a soft spot in my heart for her. However me being a 90’s girl feel bad for Faith. Its never a good feeling for me to hear someone missing out on a job or opportunity to shine especially in this day and age/economy. Y2K locked the vault on a lot of great female divas from the ’90s and hasnt opened it since 🙁

  7. Good for her, i hope she kills it.
    SMH@ diana ross…

  8. I love Jurnee because she has always been a great actress since she was a child.
