Miss Kelly Finally Gets Her Props

Singer Kelly Rowland and music industry veteran Sylvia Rhone will be honored during Grammy week at this year’s third annual Essence Women in Music event.

Kelly, who really came into her own last year with the release of her summer blockbuster “Motivation,” will give a special performance accompanied by rappers Eve and Mc Lyte.

“We’ve watched KELLY ROWLAND for over a decade grow from a teenage sensation into an international superstar. Her talent, drive and remarkable creative force show what it truly means to be a young powerhouse in an ever-changing industry,” said ESSENCE editor-in-chief CONSTANCE C.R. WHITE. “KELLY embodies the ‘soul’ of young Black women through her music and we are proud to salute her dynamic contributions.”

Kelly’s Destiny’s Child bandmate Michelle Williams tweeted her congrats to Kelly this morning, saying “You really deserve this mama… I will be there to support you.”

  1. Eve and MC Lyte?!??! Oh yes, I definitely want to see this performance! Love those lady MCs!!! Also, congrats to Kelendria. Blessings all around to everyone. 🙂

  2. Kelly deserves to be honored. It took a group effort to catapult DC and subsequent solo careers to historic levels. She’s achieved a much higher level of success overseas and the Grammys is seen around the world. Black people only want to celebrate one or two we deem as the biggest as the best! We don’t even want to comment, support or buy from anyone outside of this realm of narrow reality. But complain about artists like Rihanna always getting publicized!

I’m always amazed to see how many white artists and bands I didn’t know of and come to find out it’s their third album or more. When you watch these television talent shows, R&B is becoming white! I only think of Kelly, Monica, Jill and Mary J for R&B…that’s shameful! Melanie and Marsha are still building…Ledisi is an anomaly…as Erykah…Janelle, etc.

We ourselves are more “Jim Crow” than whites will ever have to be!

So yeah, I’m glad they’re honoring Kelly!

    Congratulations!
