I know Kelly’s most recent album, Miss Kelly, did not sell well but I still expected her to be able to have a successful tour in small venues. Many artists have lackluster album sales but still tour and do quite well because their die-hard fan base always show up to support them. Such is not the case however with Kelly as her North American tour, which only had fifteen dates, is already in trouble and three shows have been canceled so far with rumors of the entire tour possibly in jeopardy. I have made my feelings about Kelly known in the past and I will reiterate them here once again. The lack of support from Destiny’s Childs fans for Kelly is really sad. Fans aren’t the only ones to blame though, radios refusal to even give Kelly’s singles a chance has also hampered her ability to build a successful solo career for herself. Sadly, I don’t see another album in Kelly’s future and think she needs to start looking outside of music to make a name for herself.
Ok here we go again. I know where this post will eventually go but I am going to say what nobody else wants to stay. Kelly does not have IT. IT being that certain something that helps an artist sell and connect with fans.Her songs, her personality, her performances, her image are all just way to plain and boring to ever appeal to the masses. She is a pretty girl and can sing for real but that doesn’t mean she has that special something that makes someone a star.Maybe another duet like she did with Nelly is what she needs cause on her own she just sux so bad.I know that isn’t what her fans want to hear but it is the truth.

I agree Cidina. I think Kelly could build up a solid career in acting too if she takes the right type of roles. Maybe she could even build her career in music back up if she did a few songs specifically for the soundtrack. Sometimes when you come from a group and you are not the top dog you have to go in the back door to eventually come out on top. Because she was not the lead singer on most DC songs she still has to work a bit harder to show she has something to offer. Good luck to Kelly though cause she is beautiful and talented. She just needs to find her spot.
I agree with Cree, Kelly just don’t have the “IT” factor like some other artist have. She has that girl next-door appeal to her and I guess people just find it boring. She’s pretty and has a good voice but pretty and having a good voice is not going to make you a superstar alot of times. Kelly just lacks crisma. Maybe she should start her own business like latoya.
I agree with everyone, she’s lacking that IT factor. When I see her perform she just doesn’t seem confident in what she’s doing. I think she’s still finding herself and her spot in the business. Bottom line is she’s still in B’s shadow and she knows it. She still mentions B in her interviews and I’m like why :roll: Music isn’t it right now for her. She should do movies then once she gets comfortable she can come back to the music. Like someone else said maybe contribute to the soundtrack. I’m pulling for kelly though cause does seem really sweet.

WTF. Why isn’t she going to places where black people stay. I bet most white people don’t even know she has a new album out. Thats the reason why she aint sellin. Whites are the one who buy albums. Kelly is just not interesting. In all her interviews she finds a way to talk about Beyonce and the Knowles clan. She doesn’t even have the leave their fold if she doesnt’ want to. But she needs to please stop talking about them any chance you have an interview. It just takes the focus off of her. Oh and :iagree: . She doesn’t have it. I saw her perform at the Essence Festival and it just was upsetting. She spent the majority of the time holding the mic to the audience. :noway: I would pay to see her on her own if she is still doing that.

I agree with all of you about her management, her choice in careers, and her it factor. The record companies do not push artists the way they used to. Even if you get a record deal you have one shot to hit #1 and if you don’t get there you are left in the dust; unless you have excellent management. If your management is on point then they will be able to get you seen in other venues until you have another album to offer (See Rihanna). She should be taking more acting lessons and focusing totally on movies. She is well known and she can get the attention from the masses and the movie deals if she gets a good agent and maximizes her assets (which is her acting ability and her good looks).
Right now by putting out albums with OK songs on it, launching tours in small venues that she can’t even sell out, and doing no advertising deals, she is only making herself look pitiful and pity can only get you so far.
Kelly won’t and can’t get away from Matthew Knowles because it’s a well kept secret that he is her father. Kelly is a pretty lady, I won’t say beautiful, but really pretty that needs to figure things out for herself. I love Kelly but the material is lacking and honestlyacting is more her. I think vision is lacking. Alot of people are saying acting and that may be her way. Sometimes you have to guide careers to blosom. Every case won’t be open and shut like Beyonce or Rhianna. They are just easier to market. She needs a good acting role and start doing beyond good. The game is calling for multi talent and extremely noticable muti talent. She needs to emerge from the “she’s good, i like her” statement and move to she’s dope, did you see what she did, of she did that. No one ever says that about her because everything she does is just good. It’s not all managements fault either. You can’t blame the coach because the player has to make the plays work on the field. Kelly Rowland does not need to try acting. Most Black Actresses have a hard time getting good roles that represent black women correctly. Kelly and acting is just wishful thinking. She needs to either find a new label (because it is not always management, they can advocate for her until they are blue in the face but, if she is not selling records, the label will not support her) and get a new image or RETIRE. The music she is putting out now, fans have already seen (Bee & DC). Kelly needs something fresh and original to get people’s attention. When Dangerously In Love first came out, there was not a lot of promotion about it. There wasn’t even a whole lot of talk about her album until she did her live performances during the “Award show seasons”. Bee took advantage of her exposure and ran with it. As a solo artist she “up” her live performance 100%. That is when folks started to really take notice to Beyonce. Maybe Kelly doesnt want a lot of help from her friend. Maybe she wants to prove that she could do it on her own. And as stated before. “Papa Knowles” cannot make a label shell out money to promote Kelly if she is not a major player as a solo artist. If I was Papa Knowles I would be embarrass to represent her anyway, clearly he doesnt need Kelly. She needs him.
I think Beyonce ruined any chances for the other DC girls. Michelle has gone the gospel route, which is good for her. Though I’m not sure if her gospel album sold well or not?? Kelly is talented, but I’m sad to say that I agree with the others. She doesn’t have “IT”…whatever “IT” is.

And then, you have Letoya Luckett, who was kicked out of the group because she had the courage to stand up for herself, struggled for SIX DAMN YEARS (if not more) trying to make it, she is now PLATINUM in the USA and sold millions worldwide with a label that doesn’t even promote their R&B artists that well to begin with (Capitol), can we say Faith Evans (it’s disgusting)? She opened for Mary J Blige, she has her own store, she songwrites, now this woman is working with Dr Dre, Raphael Saadiq and Babyface among others for her sophomore??

You are right. Kelly doesn’t have “it”. “It” being light skin. C’mon people, this ain’t new. If you look at the most sucessful black female arists: Aretha, Billie Holiday, Tina Turner, Whitney, Diana Ross, none of them are the gorgeous chocolate brown that Kelly is. (Well, Diana Ross was, but now she is the color of her biracial daughter.) Women that are darker like Kelly or Patti Labelle have never been as sucessful. That’s not to say that these women aren’t talented. But so is Kelly.
Someone tell me what is so special about Cassie, Mya, Rihanna, Ciara or Ashanti? None of them can sing well and the only one with a personality is Ashanti. Ciara is boring, Mya is super shy, Cassie is a waste of space, and Rihanna seems more like a manequin than a real person.
The reality is that the state of Black music today is appalling. Ragtime, blues, jazz, swing, rock & roll, gospel, hip-hop even country was all created by us. Yet the only music that gets promoted nowadays is “Hip-hop/R&B.” Two forms of music that have absolutely nothing to do with each other, but since they are made by black people get lumped together.
Kelly should distance herself from this and try and discover her own musical voice. That way she could at least develop a cult following like Alice Smith, Lizz wright, Shemekia Copeland, Martha Readbone or Amel Larrieux.
Forget about selling millions of albums and focus on making incredible music. Then true loyal fans will follow. And in the meantime you will at least have gained the respect of the industry and people abroad who understand the difference between a “hit” song and a “great” song. I think for now anyways that knowledge is lost on Americans. Especially, Black Americans who think that Amy Winehouse, Robin Thicke and Joss Stone are the greatest thing since slice bread. Not realizing that we have been doing that Sh*t for forty years. Otis Redding people! Coco Taylor and the Ronettes, Martha and the Vandellas, the Dixie cups, that’s the real stuff!

Someone mentioned this up above and I totally agree…I don’t recall much with Beyonce’s first release in terms of crazy promotion (particularly compared to how she leveled the playing field with her sophomore effort). She took advantage of that, “Oh, who is THIS?”-factor and exploited the hell out of it.
Also, another mentioned that her songs (and I take it they meant on this second album of her’s) sound a lot like songs that have been done before. I agree, hence my total disinterest. But a lot of music out there today all sounds the same. I did like “Stole” song…a little. I thought it was a bit different and had a bit of a rock edge to it. Why not continue this way? Oh yes, she wanted to get back to her urban roots.
I applaud her wanting to do the type of music she loves the best, but if you’re going to do that, especially in an age where typically ALL OF IT sounds MUCH OF THE SAME, you’ve got to be able to put an individual twist on it….is this the “IT” factor? I suppose, so, but…

I can’t totally gel with you on the whole “lightskin” issue, but I respect your opinion and would like to add that I think it’s even MORE than that. Most of those ladies you mentioned are also YOUNGINS. LOL It’s also an ‘age’ issue, too. But most of those have only made a ’splash’ in the water…who among them will have longevitiy in the biz? Not many of them. So it will come down to talent, ultimately, right? India.Arie is a beautiful artist who’s on her what, 4th album right now? Sure it’s not as successful as her first and second but she’s still going strong; and guess what, her music will stand the test of time (my humble opinion). Or the likes of a Leela James or Angie Stone or N’Dambi.
Kelly could be among them if her music proved to be good enough, ya know? Those sistas do smaller venues but still put out records, still have a cult following, still get the praise and acclaim their artistry dictates.

Although she flopped with her last album, she’s in a position of power in the industry, is an established artist and sold over 20 million records.
It’s NOT impossible. Sometimes bringing this up repeatedly only makes matter worse because we perceive ourselves as people with LIMITED OPTIONS. I tried not to bring “that something” up but I need to share my belief, a lot of people say lightskinned are signed to appeal to white people. There’s some truth to that…BUT the white man may have power, he’s not the end all be all to everything, there’s “that something” that can break all the barriers, and is BEYOND the white man. How do you think women like Whoopi or Oprah, darkskinned women, who don’t represent the European standards of beauty AT ALL, MADE IT BIG, mad cash, mad recognition?? There’s something more powerful than “massa’s power”…our problem is that some of us think the white man IS “that something” and we allow him to tell us who we are…Can’t nobody stop us but ourselves…no matter how hard it is, it’s NEVER impossible.

Chante’, Vonni, and Candy :bowdown: I agree with all of you. India Arie, Whitney Houston, Oprah Winfrey, Aretha Franklin, Lauren Hill need I say more. All perfect examples that white supremacy can not dominate a person despite their skin tone. It’s an inside job and once you have tapped into that level of confidence and people can feel it from you then they are more prone to take notice and follow your lead. All the women named above when you watch them perform their jobs have a level of confidence that Kelly just has not accomplished yet. And I think that’s the key to Kelly’s success. Now I do like Kelly. However, I think that because her personality is not that strong and her family background either that plays a big role in her lack of confidence. Example, she was just reunited with her father earlier this year and she was taken in by the Knowles at a very young age. She probably was wondering what is wrong with her especially being around Beyonce and seeing how her family fight nail and tooth for her. So she is probably feeling inadequate because of those two issues alone. Maybe she will come around and maybe she want. But I wish her the best in all that she sorts out to do: thumbsup: .

As long as Kelly is with Matthew Knowles she’ll never make it big. Matthew Knowles is not going to let Kelly have a more successful career than his daughter. That’s why she keeps getting those garbage *** songs. He’s going to keep Beyonce as the #1 black pop/R&B princess. Name the last time Beyonce recorded a duet with a black female singer aside from Destiny’s Child members. It’s not going to happen b/c that’s competition.
Michele has gone off and is doing the Color Purple. Kelly needs to split from the Knowles, find out who she is and be herself. That’s the only way she can succeed. I feel bad for her because I think the people she trusts, the Knowles, are not helping her. And she needs to grow up outside the Knowles. Unfortunately, that’s easier said than done. But, I wish her the best.

Maybe Beyonce should have taken Kelly on tour with her as one of her opening acts, because at this point, Kelly’s music career is in major trouble. It is time for her to thank the Knowles family and leave the pack. If she doesn’t take control of her career, she will always be looked at as one of Beyonce’s backup singers. Which in reality that is all her and Michelle were in the first place.
As far as getting acting roles, neither Kelly or Beyonce are great actresses, so the two of them will be lucky if they get any hefty dramatic movie roles of substance. But as long as Matthew Knowles is her Manager, he will pass any decent movie roles offered to Kelly to his beloved Beyonce.

The music industry is very very hard to get into, and is very competitive and I think that Beyonce is amazing at what she does, and does it for herself. So what if she bought out the 2nd Bday, when Kelly was about to release her album, it’s business!!!!

Kelly’s poor record sales and cancelled concert tours cannot be blamed on DC fans. Fans were just that….fans…..OF THE GROUP! Kelly needs to just try something different. She needs to take a break from the music scene and find a man, get married, have a baby or two, and maybe that will inspire her.

I hate to do this seeing as how the other girl who said it was bashed. But don’t any of you think that maybe Kelly’s problem is directly related to the way she looks? The industry ain’t feeling brown and dark girls, not in the image obsessed era of the music video. Cassie lacks everything but still gets lots of publicity, promotion and airplay. Latoya was given a chance because people thought she was pretty and gave her a chance. What happened to Latavia? Why is no one checking for her or offering her a recording contract? I think Latavia will suffer the same fate as Kelly is she ever attempts to release an album because visually she is just too dark for Black people to accept her. :hmph:

I think it’s been discussed about the ‘dark skin’ and I honestly, I won’t accept that because there ARE sistas out there doing their thing who are dark-skinned in the biz. I think it’s all a matter of finding your own niche and style and quite frankly, with Kelly, I think she’s just ‘floating’ out there. :( I think she was more focused or had more of a ‘direction’ during her first run. I think Kelly should concentrate on making music for her European and Asian fans. They love her over there. She got so caught up in trying to make it over here in the US that she just about forgot about her great fanbase overseas. Plenty of artists are doing it that way, Kelis, and Amerie to just name a few.
Kelly not selling has nothing to do with her skin colour! I completely agree with Madame Zenobia, its because she is boring and all she talks about is beyonce when she should be focusing on selling her own products. I feel for Kelly I think she should definately leave the Knowles camp and maybe go work with Timbaland and let him produce a hot album 4 her!!

Will you please tell me how to go about even applying for this type endorsement? Also it seems like some sort of inner circle you have to break into with the modeling, music, and entertainment industry. Who would I personally need to call at Maybelline or put myself in front of? What agency do Maybelline normally like to chose models from? Do they always chose the extremely tall models or do they also chose print type models? Please write back I am very interested and serious about furthering my career in this area. :smile:

I agree with everyone and would just like to add one more thing. It should not necessarily be made into a personal issue that Mathew Knowles is doing a poor job for Kelly. The fact is that he has a lot of people on his label that are not doing well. He is just not a great manager. Don’t get me wrong he is a good manager because he has kept Beyonce going for all these years and Beyonce’s talent aside, it takes a good manager to reach that kind of success. But he is not a great manager/label head. A great manager is a manager that has several acts at the same time and manages them all successfully; he does not seem to be able to do that. He is a one trick pony and if Kelly was as carreer driven as the Rihannas, Ciaras, and of course Beyonces of the business she would have very nicely told her management team that she wants to go in a different direction. She would have told them that she loved them, wished them well, and looked for a new management team to achieve her goals.
I think that the problem is that Kelly does not have any goals. I think that she does not know what she wants . If you want to talk about having it , that it is not necessarily talent or the ability to draw a crowd, it is amibition. I think she is fine just settling and if that is the case she needs to stop wasting her hard earned money on these promotional tours and just go live a good life off of her DC money. I don’t think that anyone would blame her.
