Letoya Luckett to Play Dionne Warwick in Biopic

Letoya Luckett to Play Dionne Warwick in Upcoming Film ‘Dionne’

Former Single Ladies actress Letoya Luckett has been cast to play singer Dionne Warwick in an upcoming biopic about her life. The news was announced earlier today at the Cannes Film Festival, where Dionne herself was on hand to make the announcement. According to Warwick, she is quite pleased with the casting. “Letoya is perfect,” the pop icon told the press. “She has the right look and will bring out what is needed in the part.”

For those of you outta the loop, Dionne Warwick was THE first African American female pop star. She is one of the most charted artists in history, with 69 of her singles appearing on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1962 and 1998. She is also as many of you already know, Whitney Houston’s cousin.

Other notable additions to the cast of Dionne include Lady Gaga, who will play Cilla Black, a white artist Warwick described as her musical nemesis, having “stole” her music back in the day. Danny Glover will play her manager and Olympia Dukakis will play Marlene Dietrich, who served as Dionne’s mentor.

Filming is set to begin later this year, with Mario Van Peebles in talks to direct.

  1. Not a good casting choice in my opinion. I’ve seen Letoya’s acting and it is passable at best. Her singing voice also leaves a lot to be desired. A more worthy actress with a better voice should have been chosen. Anika Noni Rose automatically comes to mind.

  2. This sounds interesting. I’m excited for Letoya. I wanna see her pull this off. I haven’t seen her act in anything so I don’t know if she’s any good or not. Hopefully she’ll do Dionne justice.

  3. Wow, this is great news! I’m very happy Dionne’s story is being told. I’ve recently seen old footage and performances, and she is indeed THE FIRST BLACK POP STAR!!! I couldn’t believe how she got her start, and what a remarkable career she’s enjoyed.

While people will certainly have their doubts whether Letoya can do a GREAT job, only the finished product will tell. No one really thought Jaime Foxx would slay the Ray Charles biopic, well, I didn’t. She has veterans actors to assist. Her role in The Preacher’s Kid, where she was starred and carried the film is about the greatest measure as to her acting skills, along with other smaller roles. I thought she did a great job as a newbie! She says she studied acting growing up, and the camera does love her.

Dionne’s vocals were pristine, light and airy, in spite of her powerhouse vocal ability. LeToya has to work on vocal technique and especially melody (1960’s), not runs and looking the part, something that old school singers mastered, and why Whitney Houston reigned, where she could take the notes, convey the lyrics, move people without over-singing or screaming is amazing!

Gaga wants an Oscar or Emmy nod for sure, and Dionne comes from the old school that didn’t know anything but talent, and wouldn’t go along to get along with a casting choice she didn’t feel could do it! I hope she’s an executive producer, and is very hands on with this project! It’s bad scripts, bad creative licensing and directing, that sink projects like this.

This is LeToya’s time to shine, and I hope she does! I didn’t see Andre’s Jimmi Hendrix, or Toni Braxton’s biopic, but most don’t turn out well, so I’m hoping that this project exceed expectations!
