Ok, somebody obviously done told us wrong because Beyonce and Jay Z did not open the BET Awards as previously thought. Instead BET gave Jennifer Holiday the gift of a lifetime by allowing her to duet with J. Hudson on the Dreamgirls anthem, And I’m Telling You. I must say it was a big surprise to see Jennifer Holiday take the stage but it was a pleasant surprise nonetheless. I think both Jennifer’s did an excellent job, if not a bit much at the end. Sill, this year’s show is an upgrade from last year’s and keep getting better.
So what do you guys think so far… ?
8:27 pm T.I takes to the stage performing his hit single Big Things Poppin’. BET must have put some sort of one rapper on the stage at a time rule in effect cause T.I took the stage all alone- a very un-rapper like thing to do- lol.
8:36 pm Ne-Yo takes to the stage and performs Becaue Of You. At 8:42 Ne-Yo is joined by Fabolous to perform their hit, Make Me Better. I love this song and think they tore it up.
8:53 pm Diddy and Keyshia Cole perform Last Night, later to be joined by Lil Kim.
9:03 pm Beyonce takes to the BET stage in a futuristic gold outfit and performs a laid back version of Get Me Bodied. Bey is later joined by Monique who basically just poses. Up next Bey introduces Kelly Rowland who perform Bump Like This with Eve. Later Michelle, who backed up Beyonce, joined Bey, Kelly and Solange on stage to do absolutely nothing. I saw Beyonce’s hips swaying but that was about it. They didn’t perform a song and Solange taking the stage was weird. Still, I love the way one performance leads into another.
9:21 pm Affirmative Action was in full effect as I can see no other reason to have Robin Thicke on the show. His performance of Lost Without You annoyed me. His time slot should have been given to Lyfe Jennings.
9:37 pm Eddie Levert pays tribute to his son Gerald, singing Wind Beneath My Wings. He is joined by Yolanda Adams, Patti Labelle and Galdys Knight.
9:48 pm 50 Cent takes to the stage and totally ruins his career. As if things for him weren’t bad enough he takes his time getting into his song and his back up man curses several times, totally ruining the classy vibe BET obviously went out of their way to create. 50 is obviously feeling the heat and choked tonight.
10:04 pm Eykah Badu, Chaka Khan and Stevie Wonder pay tribute to the great Diana Ross. Her children, all 100 of them (lol), then took to the stage and presented their mom with the 2007 BET Lifetime Achievement Award. Diana accepted her award graciously and really made me proud. Diana is why so many Black singers try to be actresses. She’s a true trailblazer.
10:44 pm Ciara performed Like A Boy and the first half of her performance was straight Janet Jackson- ya’ll know it was. The second half saw her strip down and take her show into crowd finishing things off with her signature booty pop.
11:00 pm The last performance of the night was another tribute, this time to James Brown. Rev Al brought out Public Enemy who did a medley of their and James Brown’s hits.
