Will Charlie’s Angels Return with Lupita Nyong’o?
Lupita Nyong’o is reportedly in talks to join the next iteration of the Charlie’s Angels franchise. According to online reports, the Academy Award-winning actress has been tapped alongside Kristen Stewart to lead a new group of Angels for the series’ second re-boot, which is already scheduled for a June 7, 2019 release.
Should Sony Pictures and Lupita come to terms, Angels will be the latest high-profile role for the Mexico City-born beauty. In addition to her well-publicized co-starring role in the upcoming Black Panther film, Lupita is also set to make an appearance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which bows on December 15th.
As many of you already know, Charlie’s Angels was a popular drama about three female detectives that ran on ABC for five seasons. It originally starred Jaclyn Smith, Kate Jackson and Farrah Fawcett. What you may not know, is that series creator, Aaron Spelling, had a much different view of the show than what eventually aired.
According to an interview the late-producer gave around the mid-nineties, he originally envisioned a Blaxploitation-like series and wanted Pam Grier and Raquel Welch as two of its stars. ABC of course had something else in mind, and wanting a vehicle to launch the career of Kate Jackson, steered Spelling into creating something a bit more family friendly for the times.
