Mary Doing Just Fine Minus Umbrella

Mary J Blige As reported here some months ago, Rihanna’s hit single Umbrella was originally meant to be recorded by Mary J. Blige, until Rihanna says she intervened and got the writers to give the song to her. Well Mary is now speaking out on Rihanna stealing the huge international hit from her and it seems she holds no grudges. Mary says she is happy for Rihanna and the production duo of Tricky Stewart and The Dream, who penned Umbrella, made it up to her by writing Just Fine- a song Mary says better suits her and her outlook on life.

So, how is Just Fine doing on the charts as oppose to Umbrella? Not so good. After three weeks Just Fine sits at #100 on the pop charts, #20 on the R n’ B charts and #69 on the airplay chart. Umbrella in it’s third week of release was #36 on the pop charts, #17 on the airplay chart and #34 on the R n’ B charts. Granted, this isn’t a competition, but it’s always fun to compare anyway.

  1. I did not like Umbrella at all when I first heard it. After a while it grew on me. Just Fine is not growing on me at all and the video, which was directed by the same guy who made Umbrella, is terrible. Even still Mary is the superior artist. I do think she should have taken a break though. She rushed back into the studio and it shows in this first single which is just too odd and different to catch on. Mary is scared of losing her crown to Keyshia and all the new girls on the scene and made an album just to make an album if you ask me.

  2. I heard this song was meant for Britney Spears too. I guess everbody and they mama wants to claim Umbrella seeing as it was such a big hit 😆

  3. I think umbrella was a good song for Rihanna…………it fits her voice……..(even though she is not to good of a singer)I really like Mary, but she needs to just sit down now her days are over……………I haven’t been feeling her lately, but thats my opinion. She seem like she is very happy now and thats good, but I’m feeling this video!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. I read somewhere that the writers of Umbrella wrote it as a christian song not a pop thing. Google it you’ll know what I’m talking about.

  5. I can’t put Rihanna and Mary J in the same catagory. Mary J been in the business over a decade while Rihanna just been in it for two years. Mary is the queen of hip-hop soul while Rihanna sings pop. Rihanna sings bubble gum music and Mary sings grown-folks music….those two are nothing alike. Umbrella song fits ri ri, I couldn’t see her singing Be without you or Not going to cry, just like I couldn’t see mary singing S.O.S or Shut-up and drive. Both of them are on different levels, but I certainly don’t think Mary days are over. Her last album,The Breakthrough has sold over three million copies in the U.S and over seven million copies worldwide, becoming one of the five best-selling albums of 2006. This year she won three grammy awards and one of them was for the best album. Rihanna hasn’t reach the status of Mary and I doubt that she ever will.

  6. i love umbrella it’s not the first time that rihanna take a song originally wroten by someone else and make it a hit that happen whit s.o.s. at least she admit the fact that she intervened and begged for the song that’s an honnest sista .
And since she didnt try to make it seems like she wrote umbrella and bla bla bla for us to then find out that it wasnt truth
shout out to her she’ll go far by staying honnest
and shout out to Mary to recognize her own style and stay classy and not trying to be what people want her to be but herself!
    they both gorgeous and loveable

  7. I’m telling you……..she is gona end up having to put out 2 more singles and by the time she does that people will be on to someone else. People will already feel like you have put out the best you have to offerup front so they won’t look for her to fix it. She needs to cut another hit and do like she did that last time. With Breakthrough they put out a song like that first and it was up beat and good but Mary isn’t a total up beat artist. Mary is ” Be With You!”

  8. I can’t imagine Mary J singing a song like “Umbrella”. I think melodically, it’s way too simple for someone with vocals like Mary. Rihanna did extremely well with it, and good for her. Mary should stick to the slow jams.

  9. MARY J. BLIGE IS JUST FINE,FINE,FINE,FINE,FINE,FINE………….OOOOH

  10. :iagree: :iagree: :iagree: :iagree: :iagree: TINA MIRANDA U SAID IT BETTA THAN I WOULD’VE SAID IT

  11. for those that say that mary need a break :stop: idk what you are talking about i miss mary since the breaktrougth she is a singer that’s all she do and she is not shoved into no one’s troath so even if she release an album every 2 months i’ll still buy it because at least she loves music and it shows she aint trying to be wonder woman(and failing) just a wonderful woman

  12. I LOVE THE SONG! AND VIDEO!..YOU GO! MARY J. IT MAKE ME WANNA DANCE!

    :dance2: :dance2: :dance2: :dance2: :dance2: :dance2: :dance2: :dance1:

    CAN YOU DIGIT..

  13. I don’t know why a grown woman like Mary J. Blige would even be interested in a song like “Umbrella”. It’s a teen / high school-esque song.
What would a 35 year old woman look like saying “When the sun shines, we’ll shine together, you can stand under my umbrella”?
    LOL

  14. I like both of them but Rihanna has nothing on Mary.
Tina Miranda I agree with what you said too.
Darksister I know who you talking about and I %100 agree.

  15. i really like the song “just fine” it fits mary alot. umbrella had to grow on me then i began feeling it. mary doesnt need a break and she isnt too old for the industry what are yall saying? :stop: :dance2: :dance2: :dance2:

    :dance1: :dance1:

  16. I THINK MARY WOULD OF MADE THE SONG UMBRELLA WITH MORE SOUL IT WOULD OF SOUNDED ALOT DIFFERENT. LIKE THE TWO VERSIONS OF RESNTMENT( VICTORIA AND BEYONCE) THEY SOUND LIKE TWO DIFFERENT SONGS EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVETHE SAME WORDS.

  17. i cant stand that umbrella song the chorus is so repetitive, i’m glad mary didnt do that song shes betta than that pop trash

  18. TO THOSE PEOPLE THAT ‘TRYIN’ TO MAKE RIHANNA LOOK BETTER THAN MARY, THEY MUST BE ABSOLUTELY MAD!!!!!!!
MARY J CAN SING ALSO ANY SONG AND IT WILL BE STILL GOOD. RIHANNA IS NO MARCH FOR MARY!!!!!!!!

  19. Luv Mary……………..very talented, of course once you get older and things change your music does sound a little different …….in this video she seems very happy and joyful …………Mary & Rih are 2 totally different people I must agree. Rihanna like I have said before is not really talented she makes o-k music, but can’t even compare to anyone like Mary! :hifive:

  20. I can’t imagine Mary J singing Umbrella. The lyrics are so immature and young. I like Keisha Cole but neither Keisha Cole nor Rihanna are any kind of threat to Mary J. The two of them will be lucky if they have her kind of staying power in this business.
    :brownsista:

  21. This is one HOT JAM!!! When I first heard this song I was in love with it. It should be getting more air play and I think it would be number 1

  22. Love me some Mary J.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I will always love me some Mary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :dance2: :dance2: :dance2: :dance2: :dance2: :dance2: :dance2: :brownsista: :brownsista: :brownsista: :brownsista: :brownsista: :brownsista: :brownsista: :brownsista:
I totally agree with TinaMiranda, I could not have said it better.

  23. Why would Mary have to worry about Rihanna. I mean there is no comparison. She is not in Mary’s league.

  24. I can’t really see MJB doin Umbrella. I think Just Fine suits her just fine too, cause I cant see Rihanna doin that song either. All things work together…

  25. I don’t understand why everyone is saying Mary is coming back too soon. Her breakthrough album was released in December, 2005. This is a great display of Mary’s staying power. She has been in the lime light for all most two years with her album the Breakthrough and her hit Be Without You winning 3 Grammys in 2007. So, think about it. How many artist can keep an album in the media of talks for two years. You go Mary. I love you, your music, and sincerity to always do your best and achieve at the next level of success.
