Mary J. Blige Debuts New Music on Tour

First Listen: Thick of It by Mary J. Blige

Over the weekend singer Mary J. Blige debuted new music during the first of her two shows at the Foxwood Resort & Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut. The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul performed to a sold out crowd Saturday evening, where for the first time she performed Thick of It, a new single rumored to be featured on her upcoming 13th studio album.

With lyrics like “Love ain’t black and white, it’s not that simple/ It’s hard to tell who’s wrong or right/ Should I stick it out/ Are you worth the fight/ Are we worth the fight,” fans are sure Mary is talking about her now failed marriage to longtime manager Kendu Isaacs. The pair separated earlier this year and are now divorcing. Mary hasn’t commented on the separation, but given her new album is expected early next year, I think it’s safe to say whatever she has to say will be said on wax.

Mary spoke to Billboard about her new project back in June, saying she would continue to explore new sounds, and that she has no intentions of moving backward musically. “I don’t believe in doing what I’ve already done,” Mary told the publication. “Life is all about exploring and discovering new things, and that is how I view music. I want to do things I have never done before. I want to feel things I’ve never felt before, and all I can hope is that the fans want to come on the journey with me.”

  1. Her fans will be happy she’s making miserable music again. Happy Mary didn’t seem to please them.

  2. Mary J. Blige is the Queen!!!! I like the record! I know her new album will slay!
