Mary J. Blige Expected To Top 600k In First Week Sales

Mary J At Her Album Release Party 12.18.2007 Holy Guacamole! Mary J. Blige is clearly “That Chick”. According to one day sales reports from Hits Daily Double, Mary’s new CD, Growing Pains, is on pace to sale about 600,000 copies in it’s first week. That number however is not enough to take the top spot as some guy named Josh Groban is expected to top the charts with his Noel CD, which is expected to exceed 700,000 in it’s 4th. week of release. Still, grabbing the number two position on the charts is nothing to sneeze at, especially when you do it with such phenomenal numbers. Many didn’t think Mary would have as much success with Growing Pains as she did with The Breakthrough, mainly because the first single did not get as much buzz. I guess they were wrong. Me also thinks Mary isn’t so sad about losing out on Umbrella. After all, that single only helped Rihanna sell a 140k in her first week of release.

1. I remember her stating that she did not ming losig “Umbrella”. She was cool about it. But that’s not bad at all. Go Mary, I like what I’m hearing. No.2 is great especially when you been around this long. :dance2: Kill em Mary.

2. I knew she would do well simply because the music scene is so confused and crazy these days… Not knocking Mary but I think every “star” will sell tons of records mainly because music is so vapid and uninspired these days that people tend buy what they know. So, Mary can put out a cd of her blowing air into tires and she would sell 700K the first week because they know her. It’s way less thinking involved that way.

But Congrats, Mary.

3. Also, not being crass but since when did Mary’s passing on “Umbrella” become a preface to the inevitable Rihanna diss? At first, everyone talked about Mary’s passing on it and loving the song and thinking Rihanna was best for it (and she was…it would have had a R&B circa 92 sound with Mary’s voice and style of singing). But now everybody’s mentioning it and saying things like: “oh well Rihanna didn’t really benefit from it/Oh well it will be her only hit/Oh well Mary’s a legend and Rihanna’s all about a look.”
I just think it’s another way to knock Rihanna…she’s already the constant inferior foe in the Beyonce-myth so why further demonize the girl by inflating (and skewing) the Mary/Umbrella situation?

4. It wasn’t a diss. It was a fact. Many have made a big deal out of Mary losing Umbrella which was a huge hit compared to Just Fine. Take into account Mary’s recent statements and many thought Mary was a bit bitter. However with 600k under her belt I doubt she is upset as she has sold more, a lot more.

She wasn’t bitter because Rihanna got the “hit” and her single was met with a lukewarm reception…no…she was bitter because she was asked about it constantly. It seemed that she found it insulting, being asked incessantly about “Umbrella,” because it seems an implication that she missed her chance or something… This IS Mary J. Blige…She seemed, in my opinion, bothered by the insinuation that she NEEDED a hit.

6. Congratulations to Mary. Who cares if she didn’t get “Umbrella.” Mary is a legend and well respected in the music business.

And off the subject, if you don’t know who Josh Groban is, I suggest you listen to his music. This young man has an awesome singing voice and is one of the best of his generation. Unfortunately mainstream radio only promote Justin Timberlake and hip hop artist.

7. Chey I just looked him up and dude’s Christms CD has sold 2.8 million copies over the last 10 weeks. I mean he is selling 700k in the fourth week. That is like unheard of. His 2.8 million tops the Highschool Musical Soundtrack as the year’s best seller. So yeah, I may not have known who he was and America may promote Justin over him, but he too is getting the last laugh with these amazing sales numbers. πŸ™‚

8. Mary has consistantly delivered great albums. That’s why her numbers are so high.

9. Sorry, not to get off of the subject, but this guy Josh Groban is really good.
You have to listen not just to his Xmas CD but his music in general. He is a very young white guy with a very mature baritone voice. His style of music will stand the test of time because it attracts the older and mature crowd as well as some of the MTV crowd. But you are right, he will have the last laugh because Oprah Winfrey had him on her show about a month ago and now his CD sales are through the roof and he is getting much exposure. The rest they say is history.

πŸ™‚

And back to the subject, Mary J’s music has stood the test of time because she has stayed true to herself, her fans and R&B music. The media found out that she turned down or didn’t get the Umbrella song and now they want to start some controversy. Mary is in her late 30’s. She does not have time for that high school bullshit. She has and always will beat to her own drum. I respect Mary because she is an artist who does not care about trying to reach the mainstream audience.

10.
Mary has consistantly delivered great albums. That’s why her numbers are so high.
Yeah, that’s your opinion…and obviously in response to my own…so I’ll counter…
It’s an exaggeration. Mary’s legend precedes her talent at this point. Her music is average, at best…simple lyrics and beats that never quite stay under the vocals… I can understand the woman has a message, a mission, even…but she could go about it in a more artistic way.
As I said initially…in this musical climate, where new releases always seem to come from nowhere…even when there’s a fair amount of promotion…fans, confounded and underwhelmed, essentially prefer the devils of old, the ones they know.

11. Wow. That’s good. Josh Groban is going to sell like crazy anyway with that Christmas CD of his (He can sing like crazy, but anyway), Good for Mary! I think she has her own style about her, and her singing voice is very unique. You know Mary when you hear her. I respect her, and Go Mary! I’m glad Mary either passed on or didn’t get Umbrella, I don’t think it would’ve really been her. That song fits Rihanna all and every day. Just Fine fits Mary more than Umbrella, even if it didn’t achieve the loudest bark, it brought on a really hard bite. πŸ˜†

If her sales are high because her fans love her and rushed out to get her Album, then she’s done something right. I can count on one hand the artists I rush out to the record store to buy from no matter what.

12. God, I love Mary! Her new CD is great — minus a few sleepers, but that’s normal. The ooonly problem I am having with Mary – and I hate to even “voice” this – is that she talks about her struggle in every interview. I’m kinda ready for some different conversation from Mary. I mean, she’s been rich, famous, etc. for a minute now. It can’t be THAT bad… can it? I know the interviewers as the questions and she simply responds, but maybe she should just say, “I’m tired of talking about that… let’s move to another subject.” I would SO appreciate that.

13. I think she basically threw away her first week sales rolling with that first single all the way out. Very dumb on the record labels part. That was a terrible single for her as far as first singles go. “Roses” would have almost been better but she just didn’t come strong enough with this one. SHE IS NOT A POP ARTIST!

14. :brownsista: People it’s not Mary’s voice that sells her records. It’s the WORDS. She always has at least 2 songs that most women can relate to and at least 1 song that anyone can dance to, and her voice fits her songs. “Just Fine” is a good song for anyone who has problems within themselves, listen to the message in the words. It also has a good beat, a song doesn’t have to be overrun with bass to be a hit. As a matter of fact if you take the bass out of most of today’s music, these whining men and women would not have record deals, and the many 1 hit wonders would disappear because you would really HEAR that most of them can’t sing.

15. People it’s not Mary’s voice that sells her records. It’s the WORDS.

^^^ you can’t really say that, they’re can be numerous factors that can be contributing to her great sales. Now why doesn’t rhianna sell? Of course they’re can be many reasons to that as well but what is ironic to me is why she had a hit single & SO much promotion yet she didn’t sell. & look @ Josh Groban…I’ve heard of him & i think I’ve seen him on oprah too & he is selling records and Moving HUGE units yet he’s not getting promoted like that nor is he even mainstream. & so the point that i’m trying to make is that promotion does not always equal success & neither does sex appeal. & Rhianna stans can argue all day long that she’s this & that let’s see if she can top her hit umbrella or the slump sales of her last album…. Is she gonna come back with the same ‘good girl gone bad’ gimmick with her next album? or will she even be around??? we’ll see…….

Congrats mary ! I think you should release ‘roses’ next.

16.
People it’s not Mary’s voice that sells her records. It’s the WORDS.

That’s right girl.

17. I Lovvvvve Mary, I’ve Been a fan since what’s the 411? She makes great music.

18. I’m really glad Mary missed out on Umbrella I cant stand that song and the chorus is sooooo repetitive. It really wouldn’t have fit Mary anyway. On another note congrats to Mary!!!

19. All i have to say is go mary. I love her style and she a voice for women everywhere and she teaching the young generation what not to go threw with a man and life period. Her music is off the hook. We need someone these days that is singing with some sense. Between her and alicia keys that is real music. That what we missing these days. We r listening to senseless music we need to put real music back on the map. GO MARY

20. HONESTLY MARY’S VOICE IS TOO GODO TO HAVE SUNG UMBERELLA REALLY. I DON’T THINK THAT SONG WOULD HAVE FIT HER STYLE AT AL. I SEE WHY SHE DID NOT CHOOSE IT. I JUST ISN’T “MARY”

21. 600,000 with a song that everyone hated is damn good.. And keep in mind that the weekend Christmas rush didnt come in yet so it could be more………………Who else that came out in 1992 could sell 600,000 plus albums today hmmmmm my point exactly even Mriah only did 400,000 first week

22. My prediction was way off! I guess the love for Mary is OH SO universal! 600k is remarkable! If not for Oprah – Josh Groban wouldn’t be doing those numbers – the power of Lady O ain’t no joke. But Mary did her damn thing and AKeys is on her way to Double Platy! I love to see these women do it real big! And Mary’s CD is fantabulous!

23. I have heard a lot of people saying that they get tired of hearing about her struggle but I can guarantee you that 200 years from now women will be going through struggles and that is why peeps don’t mind it at all. there is always a Mary song that will say exactly what you are feeling at that moment.
Mary has tapped into a certain area of a female’s pysche and she has sold millions of records doing that – if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!

Now Josh Groban is the truth! That boy has a voice outta this world. Reminds me of a low key Andre Bocelli! LOVE HIM!

And for the blogger that said Mary’s music is “average”… :lol2:

24. Just because Mary has been rich and famous for a “minute” doesn’t make all of her emotional and mental issues go away. I mean hello, Amy Winehouse anyone? Hasn’t she just gotten worse as the months gone by since becoming an International star? Yeah.

And for that matter, people complained about The Breakthrough and the articles Mary gave when promoting that she had changed her style, she wasn’t singing about pain, she was singing too much “happy” stuff, and too many songs and giving too many articles about her husband. So maybe she put in a little more “pain” songs on this album, and people are complaining that she needs to “get over it”.

That’s why you can’t listen to the masses. They’re so fickle and quick to judge. πŸ™„ πŸ™„ πŸ™„ πŸ™„

I’m not the biggest Mary J. Blige fan, but I respect her and where she’s come from because really, she could still be that stank-attitude-having, drug- and alcohol-dependent, bad-relationship-having singer from the 1990s. She has changed and grown as a person, has healed and been set free, and that’s the most important thing in life.

25. I DONT KNOW WAT RIHANNA DID TO BLACK PEOPLE THAT THEY HATE HER SO MUCH. I MEAN CAN THE POSTER MENTION THE ONLY NAME IN THE THREAD INSTEAD OF BRINGIN IN RIHANNA. RIHANNA IS BEIN BLAMED BY BLACKS SO MUCH FUH OTHER BLACK ARTISTS DOWNFALL, OTHER BLACK ARTISTS WHO ARE NOT PROMOTED AT DEF JAM, ETC, ETC. MARY IS SELLIN MORE CAUSE SHE IS MARY JBLIGE, JUST LIKE BEYONCE. BEY CAN PUT OUT A THRASHY ALBUM AND STILL GET PAST GOLD IN THE FIRST WEEK CAUSE SHE IS BEYONCE. THE SAME THING APPLIED TO MARY AND ALICIA KEYS.
WHY DID MARY USED THE SAME VIDEO DIRECTOR AS UMBRELLA?
WHY DID SHE GO AFTER THE SAME SONG WRITER AS UMBRELLA?
WHY DID SHE PUT IN THE VIDEO THE MAGICAL THINGS FLYIN ROUND LIKE WAT RIHANNA DID WITH THE WATER?
I HAVE NUFFIN AGAINST MARY J BLIGE BUT IT IS OBVIOUS THAT SHE IS MAINSTREAM WHICH SHE THINKS SHE ISNT. JOKE.

RIHANNA SOLD 172 000 IN HER FIRST WEEK NOT 140000.

I NEVER SEEN RIHANNA BEIN TREATED LIKE SHE CURSED THE ENTIRE BLACK POPULATION BY WHITE PEOPLE. THAT IS WHY I HAPPY THAT SHE MOVIN TOWARDS A WHITE AUDIENCE CAUSE THE BLACKS ARE ENVIOUS.

26. BTW, THE TALENTED ARTISTS LIKE WHITNEY, MARIAH, AMY WINEHOUSE, ETC GO INTO DRUGS, ALCOHOL AND MENTAL BREAKDOWNS.

WHITNEY IS TALENTED BUT STILL IS A DRUG ADDICT.

MARIAH HAD A MENTAL BREAKDOWN.

AMY WINEHOUSE GETTIN ARRESTED AND DOIN DRUGS.

RIHANNA IS NOT AS TALENTED LIKE DEM BUT AT LEAST SHE STAYS HER GROUND CAUSE THE TALENTED ARTISTS ARE WASTIN THEIR OWN TALENTS DEALIN WID DRUGS.

27. You go Mary, especially in a time when top-selling artist aren’t selling the way they usually do, it is good to see Keisha, Alicia, and Mary really getting the respect from their audience and racking up the numbers on the billboard. I think the artist who use their body and looks to sell are usually only good for Awards shows/videos/visual gratification. The sistas singing about relevent issues in day to day life goes much further into hearts and souls across the world, and that build longevity

28. “…THE BLACKS..” πŸ˜† Come on, I’m pretty sure each and every black person has a mind of their own and opinions vary.

29. @majesa, yes, it is the blacks. i go on white blogs like perez hilton, hollyscoop, pop music blogs etc and i never have seen rihanna being TRASHED by dem. on the majority of the black blogs rihanna name is carried thru the dirt like bossip, brown sista, mediatakeout, crunk and disorderly, the only black blog showin a lil support is CONCRETE LOOP, SHE AINT NO OSAMA BIN LADEN but she is treated like if she blew up some black community.

the blacks blame her fuh gettin too much promotion from def jam, wtf, if the others at def jam dont want to sing music that appeal to the masses, why blame someone who is doin it? rihanna is not the first mediocre singer nor will she be the last, she is not the first to use sex appeal nor will she be the last.

TALENTED ARTISTS LIKE MARIAH CAREY AND WHITNEY TURNED TO DRUGS AND ALCOHOL AND HAD MENTAL BREAKDOWNS. WAT DOES THAT SAY BOUT WHITNEY HOUSTON GETTIN COKED UP ALL THE TIME? SHE WAS TALENTED. LOOK AT AMY WINEHOUSE. RIHANNA AINT DOIN THAT BUT MAKIN MONEY TALENT OR NO TALENT. STOP BRING DOWN THE GIRL WHO DID NUFFIN TO DESERVE SUCH TREATMENT.

the thread is bout mary j projections for her new album but then the POSTER dragged rihanna’s name fuh a COMPARISON. tell me somethin, IS MARY J BLIGE A WORLDWIDE INTERNATIONAL MEGASTAR LIKE RIHANNA. no she isnt. MARY J BLIGE HAS MADE A NAME IN US INDUSTRY RIHANNA IS STILL IN THE PROCESS OF BEING ESTABLISHED. GIVE HER THE TIME AND STOP TREATIN HER LIKE IF SHE LIKE AMY WINEHOUSE ON DRUGS SCREAMIN AT MIDNIGHT, KIM KARDASHIAN LIKE IF RIHRIH MEK A SEX TAPE, PARIS HILTON, BRITNEY AND LINDSAY LOHAN. SHE AINT DEM NOR IS SHE DOIN WAT THEY DO. TALENT OR NO TALENT.

30. It’s funny how everyone wants to talk about how Mary is not an “international artist”. Who cares? At the end of the day, she sold more records than most of these artists out here. What does that say? Her fans love her and are willing to support her. They ain’t worried about Rihanna or anybody else for that matter. I know I personally will buy her album. She makes music for the soul.

31. Mary’s new album did not disappoint. I wasn’t a fan of hers until “Breakthrough” and that album made me go back and buy all of her albums. I’m proud of her and as a 34 year old “grown woman” I can relate to her and her transformation. I’m very proud of her and all of the black women who are holding things down in this society. On a lighter note her song “Grown Woman” has GOT to be a sista anthem. I can’t turn it off! Its fun and its real. Mary’s voice can be beautiful at times, and sometimes its the emotion in the lyrics that makes her sound better. I remember when “Be Without You” came out I felt like she was looking in on my life because it described perfectly my and my husband’s relationship. I feel the same way about “Work it” and “Grown Woman” on this album. Mary is loved because many black women can RELATE to what she is saying.

I see “stop snitching” T shirts everywhere. I swear black people need to start wearing “Stop HATING” t shirts because the crabs in a barrel stuff is just ridiculous. If you can’t find something to love about other black women–and if you can only point out what you HATE about every other black woman–you just hate yourself and need deep and immediate therapy.

Go Mary!
Go Janet!
Go Beyonce (not a fan of her music but I can’t knock the girl’s hustle. She is on her hustle”.

Go buy Mary’s CD and get your “grown woman” on. It will make you smile.

Nef

32. Mary is doing great with her music, because she crossed over. In order to succeed, one cannot stay in the whole , “Black ” label or box. She’s begining to understand that. Why do you think, Mary has rid herself of that ghetto persona, with the excess hair, and outlandish clothes and make-up. And now, she’s doing songs, that are less urban. The numbers suggests that, hey did anyone see the news anchor rockin to Mary on NBC? That was funny.

33. Bohwe :iagree:

 I was not expecting mary to do those type of numbers not with Fine being the first single. I am happy for her! I think she picked up some new fans with the breakthrough and I think that is the difference. I am a fan of hers I own 4 of her CDs I haven’t had a chance to pick up the new one yet but I will. Mary did not need umbrella I think that song was meant for Rhianna. I respect mary because she constantly puts out a WHOLE album that you are willing to spend $10-$15 on. That is what’s lacking in music people focus on getting ONE hot song instead of a whole album that is worth it. I really think R&B is making a come back people are tired of what hiphop has become. Mary and Alicia have bigger numbers than JayZ!

34. :iagree: KSH, Josh Groban does remind me of Andrea Bocelli. I used to sing ‘Per Te’ so much it wasn’t even funny lol πŸ˜† .Go Mary Gooooooo! :dance1:

35. Congrats to Mary J a sista that is conscious of being a queen :brownsista:

y r u all on Rihanna :booty: Im a black woman and all blacks are not envious of her. OJ moved toward the white audience and then when he got in trouble he came back to the black audience y was that. I really could care less what kind of audience because its all about the benjamins. And I feel like Rihanna name shouldn’t be mentioned with Mary or Bey they have already proven theirself. I only heard 1 cd what else have she done and no im not a :hater: but Mary is my girl and Rihanna reminds me of the clean up woman.

37. Everyone has the right to express their opinions but I can’t STAND it when people refer to Black/African American people as “blacks”. “The blacks…”. And to top it off, we’re always lumped up together like all black people share one brain. We do have our own opinions and do not think alike.

38. Bajan, you are a liar. You are a Rihanna stan who searches blogs daily looking for Rihanna posts. You only show up when a Rihanna article is posted. Brown Sista has never slammed Rihanna and didn’t slam her in this post. You dumb 12 year old girls have your personal self esteem so wrapped up in these celebs many of you can’t think straight and start crying like a baby whenevr you think your idols are being attacked.

Fact is Rihanna is a no talent hack who can’t sell records. It was an insult for the public to keep harping on Mary missing out on Umbrella as if one song can make or break her career. Rihanna is like so many artists of the moment who have gotten more mainstream support but whose careers burn out quickly. With a hit like Umbrella Rihanna still couldn’t sell a paltry 200,000 in the first week and guess what, she still hasn’t gone platinum.

And as for the notion that White blogs love her, you lie again. White bloggers and their posters slam her constantly and you know it. And seeing as how this blog bothers you so much, how bout you execise your free will and never come back :loser:

39. Mary has every right to be proud and even gloat. Everybody and their mama made such a big deal about Mary losing out on Umbrella because Just Fine clearly wasn’t as good a single or as big a hit. This in my opinion was very disrespectful to Mary and attempted to negate the fact that Mary is an established artist who has never really needed a hit single to sell her music. With or without a hit pop single Mary is going to sell because her fan base is strong. It is not built upon White pop fans who will turn on Black artists in a hot second. Mary’s fan base is full of Black women who have been riding with Mary since 1990. Congrats to our girl for proving who the real Queen is. No one hit wonder with a push up bra is gonna take Mary’s crown. :lol2:

40. I just got her CD and I love it!! It’s one of my favorite Mary J Blige albums.

41. Oh and I know “Just Fine” didn’t get that much love, but it has grown on me. I feel like this album is not a happy Mary, but more like an empowered Mary. And the songs “Work That” and “Grown Woman” do speak to the sistas.

As for Josh Grobin, he can sang.

42. the album is great miror , grown woman roses and just fine are my favorites i love mary

43. MARY ALREADY BEEN IN THE GAME LONG ENOUGH TO KNOW HOW THE MUSIC BIZ. WORK SHE IS “JUST FINE” 😎

44. I’VE BEEN RIDIN WITH MARY SINCE “WHAT’S THE 411” WORDS CAN NOT EXPRESS MY HAPPINESS FOR HER. MJB IS THE ONLY ARTIST I WILL RUSH OUT AND BUY HER CD. SHE NEVER DISAPPOINT!!!!!! DO YO THANG! NA LET ME GET MY GROWN WOMAN ON

45. I’m sorry but I did not think Mary’s latest CD was all that. I was very dissapointed considering I’ve loved all her other cd’s..Her best CD EVER was that one from some years back I can’t remember what it was called but it had a duet with Aretha on it. That was one bad cd, as in good! Man, they don’t make cd’s like that one anymore….I have to cosign with one of the other comments above. I’m tired of Mary whining about how she’s been done this way and that way..o.k we get it, we feel your pain, we have sympathized with you and can even relate because we all have had struggles, but now it’s time to move on from that and be thankful that you’ve been delivered from that…

THE ONE WITH ARETHA FRANKLIN ON MJB ALBUM WAS THE “MARY” ALBUM THE SONG WAS CALLED ” DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME” . THIS ALBUM I CAN PLAY ANY DAY :iagree:

47. I must say that I am very happy to hear Mary is doing very well. She does have some competition with Josh Groban who has been keeping Alicia Keys from returning to the top spot on the Billboards 200. Mary is an artist who stays true to herself, and I respect that. Mary does not need one single like “Umbrella” to make or break her career. She is already established to her urban audiences. What I can say about umbrella is the “video” itself had a huge hand in how successful the song was. It was a big comeback for Rihanna with a new look and sound. I don’t think it would’ve been as huge with a Mary version. The video would not have been on the level that they did for Rihanna. I know it’s sad that sex sells, but it was “hot”. It was more tasteful as well, but anyway, Rihanna really sold the song. I am not hating on Mary, but it would have been a huge difference if Mary had the song and a different video.

As for JBL’s quote:
Fact is Rihanna is a no talent hack who can’t sell records. Umbrella for Rihanna was moreso a pivotal point establishing her with a broader international audience. Rihanna is no Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, or Celine, but It’s hard to say if she’ll burn out quickly because you never know what she can bring. I’ll keep a look out to see if she can top this “Good Girl Gone Bad” album. As for the statement about her not going platinum, she has achieved this even in several other countries. The album is also up for six (6) Grammy Nominations. Including two of the “Big 4” with “Record of the Year” and “Song of the Year”.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Girl_Gone_Bad

You also have to take into consideration that apart from the album the single can go multi-platinum as well, and it has done this as well.

http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/riaa/singles.jsp

The “Umbrella” single itself made histroy. The song is officially the biggest song of 2007 on the United World Chart, gaining more than 8 million points in less than 9 months. It is also the 9th most successful song in the last decade. “Umbrella” topped the UK Singles Chart in May 2007 and stayed there for a phenominal 10 weeks making it the longest chart topper of the 21st century.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umbrella_%28song%29

I just wanted to clarify those statements. As I’ve stated before “Good Girl Gone Bad” was pivotal, and I would like to see what she releases after this because she has improved on sales/fans from album to album.
