Mary J. Blige: People Magazine’s Most Beautiful

Mary J. Blige Singer Mary J. Blige, 37, made the list of People Magazine’s 100 Most Beautiful People. Mary, who has been entertaining the masses for nearly 20 years now says: “I’m at my most beautiful when I’m in a good mood, not dealing with any drama, and feeling healthy,” says the singer. But when she wants to get glam in a pinch, Blige has a quick beauty tip. “I put on eyeliner and mascara and some liner on my mouth and some gloss in the middle, and that’s the perfect five-minute face.” Congrats to Mary for making the list. Nice to see People step outside the box when it comes to Black women who they choose to include on their list. Still, only one of the 18 shown on their site is of a sista. I suspect the other 82 will feature the usual Black suspects- Halle, Beyonce and Rihanna.

Let me add a lil side note to this post…

I’m glad to see sistas make any list that is positive, but at the same time I don’t think we as Black people or Black women should put too much emphasis on lists made by White people. We should not care what they think of us or our particularly kind of beauty. Oftentimes we put too much emphasis on what they think of us and not enough on what we think of ourselves.

So yeah Mary made “The List” and a few other Brown Sistas will make “The List” as well, but we should not take the list too seriously. Besides, every year a million lists are made and we tend to complain when not enough of us are shown. But as I said over a year ago- we don’t need anyone’s list but OUR OWN.

  1. Neither Rihanna nor Beyonce is on the list. And I am not sure about Halle. This time People said, “to hell with all the black women – light, dark ,and in between”. I guess everyone’s satisfied now.

  2. You’ve already seen the entire 100? I doubt Mary is the only sista on the list. I saw Zoe Saldana too but I think she is classified as Latina.

  3. Stephanie, what do you think of Italian Vogue doing their latest/newest issue using on models of color? I’ve been meaning to go to the site (if there is one) and see the images/spreads.

  4. @Steph:

AMEN!!!! We should never define ourselves by someone else`s standards. You know how they do it; if you`re light you`re right and if you`re dark stay out of sight. To hell with that. So yeah we definitely shouldn`t put a whole lot of stock into these lists.

  5. That preview list is so off….Sarah Silverman? Are you kidding me? Vanessa Hudgens? A million girls with that look. And the entire Gossip Girl Cast gets a spot? Please. Somebody push the editor over his/her desk next time they start thinking stupid.

Anyway, I’m glad to see Mary there, and I hope to see more black women there. Perhaps I shouldn’t care, but when I look through magazines and fashion week photos, I don’t say “Oh well, no black women! We don’t need to be there anyway, we have our own shows and magazines!” To let society’s ignorance go isn’t as easy for me. Reminds me of how happy I was when I saw that Old Navy commercial featuring the black woman as the main model. and I said “Go Old Navy, get it together.”

Good for Mary! Someone powdered the heck out her for some reason though, and she should have had a full-face shot like everyone else. But I have a feeling there will be more black women on the list. They won’t leave out Beyonce and Rihanna, but I hope for more.

  6. Mary J. Blige is at the top of her game right now. She has been around for some time now and its good she is getting the attention she deserves. One of her last cuts the remix with lil wayne was the shit. Not to mention she is looking good for 37.

  7. Mary made the list Kudos to her,,,there should be others Jessica White,Lauren London,Bipasha Basu,Michelle Obama,Paula Patton the list goes on and on People needs to get it together.

  8. Wow I am surprised because Mary is what I would think to be “too black” for that list. She is an exceptionally beautiful woman and I’m proud she is on there. Stephanie, I feel you 100 percent on your comments as well.

  9. GOod for her!!! Her beauty has just enhanced as she matured over the years. Love QUEEN MARY!

  10. Kudos to Mary for being apart of the list :-D! But you made a very good point indeed brownsista ;-).

  11. How ironic a Mary song was playing in the background as soon as I opened this site.

Kanyade, the Italian Vogue is causing quite dust up over there. Italy is a very xenophobic society. Particularly in the North, where they tend to be fair, blonde, and blue-eyed. I was reading where the Editor-of-Vogue Italy is catching a lil’ flack for this move. It seems like a publicity stunt IMO, they’re getting worldwide press for this issue.

Stef, as far as I know, Zoe but classifies herself as black. My mom is Naomi’s complexion and she’s Venezuelan. I wish Americans would understand that Latino isn’t a race.

We all know People’s list more of a popularity contest. Agents negotiate their clients’ way on the list, they even bargain their position. All the more reason no one, other than the celebs themselves, should take it too seriously. I know I don’t.

  12. zoe saldana, jason taylor and mary are the only three according to sandra rose.

  13. As I’ve said before, I find Mary J.’s music to be very interesting. As a guy, I also find Mary J. to be very, very attractive. She’s got a nice shape to her body and that little mole over the left side of her mouth is very sexy.
Nefertari, it’s so nice to hear from you again. Don’t stay away so long next time. Be blessed.

Greetings Bro. I’ve been reading a lot but not commenting as much. I have a case that is taking up a lot of time and energy. Glad to hear from you. Peace and Blessings.

  15. Actually both BEYONCE AND HALLE BERRY ARE ON THE LIST FOR BEING HALL OF FAMERS. Halle is mentioned for being on the list 12 times and Beyonce is mentioned for being on it for 5 times. RIHANNA is also on the list in the category of the ‘charity’ thing

  16. MARY???? Ok, I’m submitting my photo for next year’s list!

  17. @Truth Hurts

I think it is even sadder that the only people who seem to be able to recognize that Mary is a unique beauty–are white. Boy has history and the media done a number on the minds and souls of black folk.

  18. @NEFDONTGIVEADAMNWHATUTHINK!

    B*TCH Please!!
