Mary J Blige: Stay Down Video
Stephanie on April 17, 2008 at 4:15 pm (2 months, 2 weeks ago)
It’s been a long time coming but the second single and video from Mary J. Blige’s Growing Pains CD is finally. “Stay Down” comes almost five months after the release of Just Fine and I am sure Mary fans are happy to see that her label, Geffen Records, has not abandoned the project. Growing Pains debuted at the top of the charts and has already sold a million and half units here in the US.
Below we have Mary making an appearance at the Ritual Nightclub last night and look for Mary, along with Jada Pinkett Smith, to make an in store appearance for Carol’s Daughter at the Fox Hills Mall in Culver City, California on April 22nd.

A male friend picked this his fave so I am not surprised it was selected as the next single. I just got the CD last week. I really like “Work That” & track 6 (”Never Fall in Love Again”?) & track 11 “What Love Is”.

I love this song. Mary sounds fabulous. Video is a bit weak, though.

Mary J Blige is so ten years ago. Her fans continue to buy her albums in bulk when they debut but then Mary tends to tap out at around a two million and that is why Geffen waited months and months to release a new video by her while releasing several new videos from Keyshia Cole who they are grooming to be the next Mary. Keyshia is also more interesting and the face of the new generation of urban Black sistas.

I absolutely love this song. I agree that the video is lack luster but Mary does look really beautiful.

I love the song, but it looks like they didn’t put very much thought into the video. What’s the point of the snow and her singing on mountain tops?

I agree with everyone about the video being bland and pointless; to me it looked cheap. The song is great though, love Mary!

“Renee” and “Teeda”, good day to you. Please allow me to shed a little light on the “Stay Down” vid and in that way you will hopefully understand it better.
Mary J. is singing about her relationship with her man. It is plain to hear in the song itself that this relationship has come upon some bad times. By reason and logic, you can assume that the relationship was doing just fine, at one point. But now that things have gone bad, Mary J. says that “sometimes when we fight, it don’t seem like God’s design…” and ” The trauma won’t last for ever, we’ll beat it as long as we’re together”. So Mary J. is also singing about hope and how the romance will return to the relationship if her and her man keep the faith and keep on keeping on.
The words to this song relate to the video very well. Here’s why: Again, by reason and logic, when Mary J.’s relationship with her man was going well, her world was filled with love and romance; it was a world that was warm, it was filled with light. It was a world that gave her comfort, securtity; she felt safe in the love between her and her man. But now that things have gone momentarily wrong, Mary J.’S world has become cold, desolate, empty. Mary J. sings from mountain tops that are frozen to show that she feels all alone. In the end, she pleads with her man telling him to “Stay Down”. In other words, to stay committed to their love, to their relationship. Stay committed to eachother and to their future together; stay committed to the gifts of love and fidelity which have been sent to them as a part of “God’s Design”. Mary J. says that if they do this, then their love will return and their relsationship will once again be the source of their strength, their joy, their happiness.
I hope that it is now a bit clearer.

I love Mary and she just can’t do any wrong from my perspective. I love the song. I understood that the video was meant to appear bleak and cold. That is how life feels when there are problems in a relationship that is normally beautiful…it makes the problems feel that much colder and dismal. It is a beautiful song.

I love Mary. I think she is inspirational, and her music is the soundtrack of her life. From “Whats the 411″ to “Growing Pains” you can see the growth and transformation of Mary not just as and artist but as a woman. I must agree with some of the earlier posts in regards to the quaility of this particular video. If a video requires an indepth explanation of the symbolic meaning of the props…then maybe the video is a little too deep for the song. I think Hype Williams is a bit over-rated as a video director. Back in the late 90’s his video production was considered revoluationary…now it’s becoming a bit predictable and lame. With that said I must admit that I love Mary and i love this song. As long as Mary puts out albums I will forever be a consumer of her music. And all us true Mary fans have “stayed down” with her from Day 1!.

I’m sorry Rashida but I gotta disagree with you. Mary is not so 10 years ago. She’s still hot and I don’t know too many artists that came out in 92-93 who are still topping the charts. And like you said Keyshia is being “groomed” to be the NEXT Mary. That’s because Keyshia isn’t original. Her music is cool and I like some of her songs but she totally bit her style off of Mary. A lot of these new artists need to try to stop being the “Next” Usher, Tupac, Mary J., etc. and come with something NEW and ORIGINAL.
