Mary J. Blige vs Susan Boyle

What evil hold does Susan Boyle have over the American people? According to industry insiders, the British sensation in on track to sell another 500,000 copies of her “I Dreamed a Dream” CD. If these numbers hold true it will be more than enough to fend off the Queen of Hip Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige, whose new CD, Stronger With Each Tear, is predicted to sell anywhere between 300,000 and 350,000 copies in its debut week.

Stronger will be Mary’s third album in a row to be released on the eve of Christmas. The Breakthrough started the trend back in 2005 and sold over 727,000 copies in its first week. Growing Pains was released on December 18, 2007 and debuted in the #2 spot with sales of 629,000. The album would eventually capture the top spot in its second week of release.

Mary celebrated the release of her latest creation earlier this week and pics of the singer and friends can be seen below.

FYI: Mary’s rep is denying reports that the singer slapped or punched her husband at the release party. “They’re as happy as can be,” spokeswoman Karynne Tencer said. “They’re spending the holidays together with their three children. Everything’s great.”

  1. Mary looks great, and really how good is that Susan Boyle cd I mean come on really America? but congrats to both.

  2. White america is still -very big,no matter how much hiphop and R&B tries to inflitrate. Sympathy can go a long way right to the bank.

  3. To RESERIOUS- Nothing to do with race. How come Lady Gaga didn’t make it to the top stop then? It’s really because people (like myself) are tired of nowadays music and just want a fresh sound. I don’t know but I am also tired of all the marketing tactic. I sometimes really feel like some artists want to push their album down my throat.

  4. Susan Boyle’s music is no more real
than anyone els’s. RUSERUIOUS is right about the sympathy factor. How this woman is selling this many copies of an album and yet the sogs aren’t being played on radio is anyone’s guess. Boyle has the Simon Cowell machine behind her and she is as much of a product as Beyonce, Rihanna and Lady Gaga.

  5. I also hope this story of Mary hitting her husband is false. It took her years to overcome her badgirl image and now she is a respected artists. If this turns out to be true it will so damage her now respectable image.

  6. Susan Boyle is to adult contemporary as Taylor Swift is to country music. Both women are rocking the sympathy vote like its election year. I think the difference is Susan Boyle is divinely talented and finally getting her due. Her appeal is primarily to white America, just like Taylor’s, but she’s not singing anything we haven’t heard before. I don’t think Mary or Alicia or Lady Gaga even have anything to worry about. To each his own- who cares who has the top sales. Mary, Alicia and soon Gaga will be legends in their own right. Much respect to Susan Boyle, but if she can keep her sanity in check to make another good follow up album, the she too has nothing to worry about. Congrats to all these ladies.

  7. To Cicely- Ya right, what sympathy lasts this long? Her album sells 500K every week for many weeks. I don’t think it’s sympathy.

  8. COCO did you buy Susan’s album? Have you heard one of her song’s on any radio station? I haven’t. Much love to her but an album selling half a million copies every week with no radio play (as reported by Billboard) doesn’t sound right to me. Something is fueling this woman’s sales and it isn’t good music.

Are Black women so happy to see other other Black women fail that they kiss the *** of an old white woman who won’t be around a year from now? Sistas are almost giddy that Rihanna, Alicia and Mary didn’t go #1 but Susan did.

  9. 2 Coco- when i say white america im not saying they don’t like hiphop, i mean the surburb kids rock 50cents, but who is buying Susan albums-not me not you, no one on this forum-White America obviusly. And 4 the record the lady can blow it down, i can appreciate all genres, hers isn’t my preference but i can respect it tho. Why would Mary sell over susan boyle? Rhianna hasn’t. Its not an insult. Mary is for the black audience, yes she has white fans but lets be real- 8 out of 10 are black or spanish. This isn’t shocking. This is what Mary’s 20th album something.
Cicely-yes i am happy susan sold more than Rhianna. don’t care 4 her neva have neva will. Susan boyle isn’t a model, wears clothes and still sell records and guess what-can really sing. So this supposed reign from Rhi, evidently got cut short. Mary and Alicia i luv , both are talented& they will be okay. They got their loyal fan base, so susan can go diamond, still won’t affect those two..

  10. I saw Susan’s album while I was buying Alicia’s and it looked like mostly covers than original music. I know she at least the one orginal but is it mostly covers?

  11. $ignature Barbie

(at)17150918 I was thinkin’the same thing (how good is that susan boyle cd come on now)lol but anyway I am and always will support mjb so…..

  12. Yeah, this susan Boyle lady isn’t going anywhere yet.

  13. you can call this an opinion if you want but white people are more loyal fans than any other race they don’t download, and bootleg AS MUCH as blacks etc. I mean some of these people literally travel around the WORLD constantly to see their favorite artist/bands toursd and when I say constantly I mean hope on a plane to London then on another plane to Malaysia etc. Now how many black people do you know that does some s*it like that? I’ll answer for you (a big goose egg)

  14. If you hoppin on planes 2 different countries at the drop of hat that means you got $,no matter ur race and someone in the minority category is actually buying records if mary is pushing those numbers of her last albums. loyal don’t mean you ain’t broke

  15. Susan Boyle is quite talented and her rise to superstardom is part fad and partly rooting for the “underdog,” but at the end of the day, she can have a lengthy career because her core audience will be the ones who love Josh Groban, Charlotte Church, Bocelli and other adult contempory singers, these artists sell recors. Singing covers was wise given her age and physical image.

This Boyle rage will continue until the next big thing comes along…white people are much, much better fans, they honor their idols new and older ones, i.e. Cher, Madonna, Celine Dion, Barbara Streisand, Rolling Stones, U2, Amy Winehouse, Katy Perry, Pink, Christina A., Britney Spears and introduce their kids to the music and artists they love, BUY even when it’s not their best work. Why Eminem is the artist of the decade, not the best by no means, but his fans have crazy support for him and buy, whether he’s in the spotlight or not!

How do we treat our artists?

  16. Mary will continue to do well…she doing well for first week numbers, which have been down for other heavy hitters, but her exposure has been great and she’s grown vocally and have expanded her brand greatly. Opening the center for women, the films, endorsement deals plus the music, Mary is still very much on top after two decades! I bought her new album, not because I was moved by the single or even her other work on the soundtracks, I just know Mary’s album always have some tracks I really like that won’t make it to radio or a video and to show support, I’m a fan!

  17. Mary new album is great black people naw sum black people are lazy and always want thing on a silver platter they go based off what other people tell them instead of going an pick the album up and c for their self Mary album is really good……………

  18. Right on to Cynthia and Coco to EVERYTHING they said! Plus, I’m really happy for Susan Boyle. Her music is absolutely beautiful and timeless. I just checked her out on YOUTUBE and I’m a sista of color about to get her album. She has a truly refreshing sound and it’s nice to know that QUALITY music isn’t dead.

Honestly, I wish MJB success, but none of the songs she’s released thus far offa this album sound like anything of quality I’m willing to buy so if she sells 325,000+ this first week than wow, her fans are dedicated and she shouldn’t complain. Plus, it doesn’t matter where you debut, it matters how many you sell in the long run. Mariah Carey’s debut album started of at #59 and treked it’s way to #1 in a matter of weeks and actually STAYED there and rocked the charts over a year. Most artists who debut at number one today might be #13 the next week, then #28 the next and just continue to drop.

Merry Christmas all, and have a blessed New Year! :-)

  19. @RUSERIOUS- Im sayin they (whites) are more loyal bottom line. And you dont have to have cash to be…loyal (I would NEVER do this personally) but when Michael Jackson had his funeral there was a black woman who said she sold ALL her furniture and belongings just to fly out and attend the funeral service because she “wanted to pay her respects” so it could be they are crazy or really love their favorite artist but I say crazy lol.

    Merry Christmas to all!

  20. I can give Susan Boyle another one more album. This sympathy reaction from fans won’t last long. MJB is at the other different position.

  21. Looks like Mary J Blige has to keep relying on Christmas Eve in order to sell records. Since the first week sales fluke of TBT was released to high numbers only due to Christmas sales she continues to try to milk the market.Funny thing is she never gets past the 3 mill mark on these albums and stays in the top charts which means past the first week her sales plummet. I guess these lower numbers for this cd proves that the public is finally catching on to her little racket.

  22. I brought Mary’s album because I am a fan. And if you r really a fan of an artist you will be the album no matter what. And Mary will do good no matter what.:)

  23. Susan Boyle’s cd is an instant classic. Its the type of cd people will be listening to for years to come. Mary and em are good for only a season. People get tired of fast food and yearn for freshly prepared homecooking, and that is what Susan Boyle represents. She represents talent in an industry that has bcome so derailed by image and looks. Susan Boyle may be just the thing we need to get music back on track with real singers with real talent. Don’t be fooled into thinking there is sympathy involved or that only white people are buying her cd. People are sick of gimmicks, smoke and mirrors. Its time to make Sasha Fierce, Gaga, Adam Lambert, Rihanna, etc…deliver or sit down with the foolishness. I am getting a copy for my birthday! I can’t wait!

  24. @ Lisa Mary sold 7million world wide with break through case close

  25. I don’t like Mary’s album. Only a couple of tracks but congrats for her success. :)

  26. As for Susan Boyles most of all the songs are covers of other people popular songs nothing orginal so congrats to her Mary is syill the better total package 18 yrs strong lets c where Susan be in 3yrs from now lol…………….

  27. Jamison B. Rhodes

Susan boyle is ok, but Mary J.Blige is a bonafide superstar as well as a legend. She earned her title 4 the past 18 years. THE QUEEN OF HIP HOP SOUL!!!
