Mary J. Blige Taking Over 106 & Park
I think one of the best promotional tools ever devised was having artists host high rating shows during the week their albums are due to hit record stores. Def Jam utilized this strategy with Rihanna and it didn’t work (lol). It did however work for Ciara and LeToya Luckett, who did the same thing. Well it is now Mary J. Blige’s turn as she will share hosting duties with Rosci and Terrence all this week on BET’s 106 & Park. And for those of you who do not know, Mary’s new album, Growing Pains, comes out today and expectations are high.
Nearly 20 years after she first hit the scene (yeah it’s been that long) Mary is now at the peak of her career. Unlike other female artists who have sold big numbers throughout their career, Mary had her highest first week sales in 2005 with The Breakthrough, which sold an unheard of 727,000 copies in it’s first week. No other R n’ B female had ever accomplished such a feat and Mary set the bar not only for other female artists but for herself as well.
So on the heels of of the release of ‘Growing Pains” the industry is all abuzz with talk of whether Mary can do “It” again or at least come close to “It”. “Just Fine” is no “No More Drama”, and has moved up the charts slowly and with little fan fair. So can Mary almost go Platinum in a week? I dunno, but Hits Daily Double will have all the answers tomorrow afternoon, at which time I will post them here.

I predict 350,000 in the first week. Honestly Mary is royalty and can do no wrong at this point in her career. She has a solid fan base that is going to hold her up no matter what.

Is it just me or does it seem like the promo for Mary was a bit low key this time around? Record labels seem so fickle sometimes. I don’t really hear her song on the radio much either, at least not in the MD/DC area. It’s Mary though so It will sell. Been a fan for years.

I hear Mary’s song alot here in NY. But I don’t see much promo otherwise, like commercials etc. I heard she is releasing this album independantly, that might be it.

I mean you can’t say that because Alicia Keys now holds the record for highest first week sales for an R’n'B artist with 742,000 copies for “As I Am”. She also accomplished to have all 4 of her albums debut at number 1 on the Billboard 200 Albums.
