While overseas performing in the UK revival of Chicago, singer Michelle Williams sat down for a one on one interview with the BBC. The budding young theatre star talked about the usual- her new role, a possible DC reunion, and why she thinks she hasn’t had the same level of solo success as her bandmates, Kelly Rowland and Beyonce Knowles.
On being disappointed in the performance of her last album:
“Very disappointed because I don’t go in the studio for my health. I felt like I was ready to go, it seemed like it was doing well at first. So I understand you cannot depend on your label and your management for 100% backing.
I know there were things that I had to do, or could have done, that maybe I didn’t do as well – maybe I didn’t have a good enough internet presence. Sometimes artists have to market themselves now.
On being envious of Beyonce’s solo stardom:
“I wouldn’t say I’m envious but I know that I can have number one songs. We all can. Myself, Kelly [Rowland] – she’s got a number one song now with David Guetta [When Love Takes Over]. It’s possible.
Destiny’s Child, we’re all solo. There’s no reason why A, B and C can’t have their own levels of success in lanes A, B and C. I might get in trouble for saying that but, oh well.
And what I hate people to do is, they don’t think because I’m not visible over here with the number ones, they think I’m not doing anything or they think I’m not as successful.
But I’m in the freaking West End! I’m the first African-American woman to play his role in the West End! But it’s okay. The other day I was walking around London, nobody made a fuss – I like that. I wanna be respected for what I do but I don’t wanna be bombarded and can’t go anywhere.
So that’s what I have over Beyonce. I can go anywhere I want.”
There’s no reason why A, B and C can’t have their own levels of success in lanes A, B and C. I might get in trouble for saying that but, oh well.
and GO!
I didn’t understand that part. Nothing about it comes off as controversial to me.
Michelle will have longevity in her career because she is versatile and seems to have a head on her shoulders. goog luck to her.
I was wondering when this interview was going to make it on here. I am just glad that she realized much sooner than Kelly that you can’t rely on management alone and you have to make things happen for yourself. She is right success is not always about being seen, it comes in many different ways.
Congrats to Michelle :)
She has a certain “it” about her that I like. She comes off as real also. I like that. The best of luck to her.
A=beyonce B=kelly C= Michelle
I guess that’s what she mean by A,B,C lol but michelle is cool
I agreee with Michelle, everyone can be successful if you are talented. It is a shame that she didnt leave her previous manager a little sooner.
Best of luck Michelle, I am rooting for you!!
Determination! I think is one thing that Beyonce has over all. She is very determined and focus ON HER Career right now. Michelle has now realize the key to having a successful career its HER.You are your biggest fan and if you don’t push and make it known that you are on the seen YOU don’t want it BAD enough. Way to TAKE charge Michele.
Determine…has nothing to do with it as you can see they all are. The sad thing about it is dark complexion and brown complexion women have not been big sellers in the record industry in the last few years look at artist like Indie Areie Angie Stone..Phenomenal Sista’s!!!..BEYONCE SELLS!!! The Knowles are on cash really hard and Beyonce sells….My advice to Michelle and Kelly and no they did not ask…stay away from the negative media. choose your words wisely.
Is she still under Matthew’s management? She seems really down to earth and very realistic about what is going on with her career.
I always thought Destiny’s Child members were ALL talanted, but when your Dad runs the show, you will get better representation than the rest and i guess it show….Without Beyonce, they are reduced to doing theater like they are new to the scene..Whats next Las Vegas shows..I wish Michelle and Kelly all the luck in the world.
