Congratulations goes out to former DC3 member, Michelle Williams, who just scored her first solo #1 club hit. Michelle’s most recent single, The Greatest, just vaulted to the top of the charts on Billboard and is the second single from Michelle’s Unexpected CD to go #1 on the music charts. The singer’s first single, We Break The Dawn also went to #1 on the dance radio chart. Michelle recently spoke to Corduroy Magazine about her hopes and aspirations for her solo career and said: “My goal isn’t to sell-out stadiums or be on the cover of magazines anymore”. “My dream path is just to get that loyal fan base. I don’t care if it’s a hundred million or a hundred thousand. I’d rather play an underground club where people all know your songs than perform for audiences who have no idea who you are.”
Good for Michelle. The club scene can keep an artist working for years. The singer is expected to hit the tour circuit in early 2009, playing small club dates across the country. Check out her official website for details.

Sounds to me like she is selling herself short. I’m all about being realistic, but there’s no reason why she shouldn’t aim for the stars – the sky’s the limit!
the reason she doesn’t aim for the stars is that she is scared to fail, or look too ambitious, these days as an artist if you say in my future i want this and this and this, then you are labelled badly for having ambition…personally i don’t see anything wrong with ambition and with reaching for the stars, as long as you are prepared to work for it…
Congrats to Michelle on her second Billboard #1!
Congrats to her. i love her first single
I’m confused. What radio station is playing her songs?? If it weren’t for blogs, I wouldn’t even know she had anything out! Oh well…..congratulations anyway!
@ Baron I agree that she is selling herself short. I think she feels she has to say that, since she is not doing as well as she hoped. I wish her much success in the future. You never know, she may blow up a little later on.
GOOD FOR HER!
I don’t think Michelle is selling herself short. Everyone has different goals and like she said she doesn’t want to have that far off feeling, she wants the closeness of the smaller venues. I wish her the best.
Well…congrats
i agree @ sub..i think its actually smart of michelle to work at getting/maintaining a small but loyal fanbase..why aim to be an it girl..just to be replaced when the next hot, young thing comes along..music industry and the public are fickle..especially these days..people have the attention span of a two year old..lol
I think she can shoot for the stars while maintaining a not-so-blockbuster career. I mean, small venues keep many an artists in business. Sure, everybody wants to be a starruh, sitting on top of the world and its okay to have those hopes and aspirations, but in the meantime it’s also okay to cater to the few who actually DO support you. In this case, for Michelle, it’s the geighs and the dance club attendees….they love her and can support her; obviously WILL support her. Good luck Ms. Michele :brownsista:
I agree with Surabi and Tosha.
I love this girl, she is so simple and not in your face and space everytime…you can see that she has a beautiful spirit…..i think she wants to connect with her audience unlike the stadium where some people are a distance away…..i wish she cud get rid of Matthew Knowles like Kelly did.
I saw video for “The Greatest” recently…although I am not a fan of her voice…I really enjoyed it and she sounded good.
A realistic goal. Congrats Michelle!
I rarely hear from this girl, but when I do I end up liking her more and more.
And Stef ain’t neva lied about the dance scene keeping some artists’ careers alive.
Way to go Michelle.
Her album is actually a certified banger … people just are not giving it a chance. It’s far more interesting that that crap Beyonce has out, that’s for sure. Far more variety and depth …
 michelle keep doing what you love to do…
Hey, what happened to my comment?
Nevermind. It’s obvious, I’ve been working too hard today and am blind as a bat because of it.
Steph, feel free to delete my ‘doh’ moment above. SMH @ myself.
TGIF!!!!
:lol2:
I enjoyed the song, but not enough to listen twice. Who else was on this chart? Who was her competition? That makes the difference in the quality of the chart. Apparently, its not one of the major charts because its not mentioned at Billboards site. The last time y’all reported Solange was number one, her competition was Alvin and the Chipmunks, Sexual Chocolate from Coming to America, and a children’s choir from the Baptist Church on Martin Luther King Blvd. LOL! Give me a break. Michelle’s goals are minimal because she knows what her fans won’t admit. She can’t do any better. :lol2:
Ditto on the club scene. Jodi Watley is STILL doing her thang in the club scene. Gay brothers are keeping the sisters paid.
:hifive:
Congrats to Michelle for another #1 single
I think that michelle could set high standards for herself. and is it just me or is she referring sold out stadiums and millions of fans to beyonce. I really think so. she has nothin on beyonce.
I can connect with Michelle because she is a person not a product, artist are trying hard to brand themselves into a product….look at sasha fierce…..its not about the music anymore, everyone wants sold out venues, win every award, make history….real music is gone…..Gone are those days when artist used to take a break and allow us to enjoy their albums for few years….thats why the industry is falling apart and fans are leaking the music. Put the music first then money and fame will follow effortlessly you wudnt even have to work hard, your true music will work hard for you.
Well, everyone knows what they want, and if that is what Michelle wants, then I say go for it. There is something to be said for being partial to your “comfort zone”.
Anyway, Michelle, good luck to you and you are looking very pretty in those shots. Count me as a “loyal fan”.
Maybe she got her fill of sold out stadiums, cover of magazines, etc from when she was in Destiny’s Child. It’s not like she doesn’t know what she’s talking about. She lived it. I wouldn’t blame her. She’s made her $$ from those DC days. She can afford to play smaller venues and like some others have stated, the smaller venues keep some artists paid.
Kelly is in the UK. From what I’ve read, she is a starruh over there more so than Beyonce.
Since Michelle is selling well in the dance circuit then common sense should tell her that she needs to stick with dance music and promote her stuff more in Europe. Dance is one of the biggest sellers over here, and if its helping her sell and stay in the game then she should stick to it!
Her label are stupid; they should get a producer to remix her songs on the album and maybe add one or two new songs, take her to Europe and promote her as a dance artist. If Booty Luv can have number 1 hits here, then surely Michelle could to.
She could also release her dance stuff in the states and perform at dance clubs/gay clubs wherever they like that kind of sound. Build a fan base in that genre
She needs to go to where the money is if she wants to stay in the game. Its all good singing to 5 people in a piano bar in Kansas, but when your an ex -member of Destinys Child no one is going to get that. She needs new management and needs to sing dance music! Simple
Goodness they need me to be a music manager, I’d have her making millions in a second (oh the modesty)
what is wrong with u people…michelle has been there and done it all as dc3 member…how can she be selling herself short…she’s taking a laid back approach and i agree with her wholeheartedly as an artist with this statement…(I’d rather play an underground club where people all know your songs than perform for audiences who have no idea who you are.)”
really now people…she’s at the perfect point in her career right now..quite comfortable i might add…dont listen to the haters michelle…love ya!
:booty: goddamit stop comparing the three ladies. I just knew when this article mentioned Michelle, somebody was going to throw Bey up in the mix. You all are something else :booty:
