Next Generation Divas

Mya VH-1 celebrated the ten year anniversary of the Save Music Foundation at the Lincoln Center in New York City and singers Mariah Carey and Mya were on hand to celebrate the occasion. VH-1 aired it’s first Diva’s Live concert in support of the foundation back in 1990 and it was a spectacular event, featuring amazing performances by Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, and many others. Diva’s Live became the premiere event for female singers to perform at and for about the first 3 or 4 years I remember watching it religiously. I even picked up the CD from the second year that featured an amazing duet between Mary J. Blige and Whitney Houston. Sadly, after about the 4th year, the lack of female singers who could actually sing, caused ratings to dip and the show to eventually change it’s name.

Divas Live was never the same, but an anniversary concert is scheduled to air next year and I think that would be a great time to resurrect the old format. Clearly Beyonce has moved up in the world and is worthy of the diva title. Patti Labelle was always a diva and complained in the past of never being invited to perform. Alicia Keys is also worthy in my opinion to headline the show. Hopefully the VH-1 people will take note of all the great new women on the music scene and invite some of them to perform on the next show.

In the meantime, here are a pics from the event…

  1. This brings back memories. I’m heading over to You Tube now. Aretha Franklin stole the show that first year and Whitney Houston was high as a kite the second year. I think things went down hill after that terrible year they paid tribute to Diana Ross. It was even worse the year after that when they paid tribute to Aretha Franklin and I haven’t watched it since. I agree Patti would tear the roof off the place and you know Beyonce and Alicia would do the same.

  2. I always enjoyed the Divas Live concert and you know who I’ve always wanted to see on it?…..
Ms. Toni Braxton!! I remember after the last year, I thought, “Next year, they should have Patti and Toni- most definitely!” I also agree Beyonce and Alicia deserve their spots on a Divas Live concert.

  3. I think I’ve seen one of the Diva concerts, maybe the first or the second. I would like to see a newer one, a revival with newer artists and yes, I too think Beyonce and Alicia need to be added to the venue. They are household names and “Divas” now in their own right.

    😉

  4. Mariah looks good for her age she acts like a true DIVA! Mya is ok shes kinda wack to me, but thats my opinion. I think something like that should be dedicated to women who has been out for a long time and worked really hard now thay are Divas. Beyonce is talented and she does work very hard, but there are other females who deserve credit also if you ask me Bee over works her self for no reason, she will always be remember so why try so hard……………………..

  5. I agree. Beyonce and Alicia are really making moves in this generation

  6. Beyonce, alicia k.,fantasia, and jill scott would be my choice of this era’s “DIVAS”!

  7. I have never liked Fantasia’s voice and really don’t want to see her on stage taking her shoes off and acting all low class. She needs to never ever ever make a Divas appearance.

  8. DIVAH’s LIVE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME TO ME. I WOULD RATHER WATCH RE-RUNS OF THE CONCERT MORE SO SEE A NEW GENERATION. NEXT GENERATION OF WHAT? MYA

  9. Tia I must agree I don’t think that Diva’s live will ever be the same either. Stephanie I also bought that same Divas live cd. Whitney and Mary J. tore that Aretha Franklin’s, “Ain’t no way” song up. Now don’t get me wrong I love some Alicia and India Arie. But it seems that none of the Artist out today can compare to the last generation. When and if Whitney ever gets herself back together I would love to see her do more albums and concerts. I was and still am her number one fan. There is no one out right now that can even come close to: Whitney, Patti, Aretha, Michael, Mariah(vocals even though a lot of people don’t like her I must give credit where it is due), Donna Summers, Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Lionel Richie, Al Green, Otis Redding, Chaka Khan, Ray Charles, The Ojay’s, The Temptations etc. Not only can’t they compare to them from a musical talent stand point they don’t even measure up to them as far as merits and breaking records. I was just reviewing musical stats the other day and not one single group or artist out today fall in the same sales category for any of the above artist. Some may argue that the internet was not around and more music is being down loaded. But still when these artists came along in the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s our culture was still coming up financially in many ways and the sales for our black artist was astonishingly far better. Michael is the only black man to have sold 500 million records or more while the other’s fall in the 200 million records or more category. Whitney alone sold 16million copies of the Body Guard while the most famous artist out today can barely make it pass 6million copies. Whitney’s album “Just Whitney”, which was her least highest selling album, still sold 9 million copies. I rarely even listen to the radio anymore I normally play my favorite mixed cd’s of old school R&B. Most of the artist and songs on the radio are so awful until it’s not even worth listening to. Sometimes I can’t believe how some of the consumers and listeners let them get away with the garbage they are producing. But I hope some better artist come out and save R&B because right now it’s dieing.

  10. THAT’S WHAT’S UP REAL TALK. I HAVE TO AGREE WITH YOU, I RARELY LISTEN TO THE RADIO MYSELF, I LISTEN TO MY MIX’S CD’S BECAUSE IT SEEMS LIKE THE RADIO ONLY PLAY WHAT THEY WANNA PLAY , THERE IS TOO MUCH OF THE SAME MUSIC PLAYING, I’D RATHER HERE SOME 90’S R&B AND HIP-HOP MUSIC IF YOU ASK ME! CAUSE THE GENERATION TODAY ONLY LET’S US KNOW WHAT THE NEXT GENERATION IS GOING TO BE LIKE.

  11. I have to agree that Divas will never be the same. Now a days, more emphasis is placed on the attractiveness of a singer than their actual talent. In my opinion, Beyonce and Alicia Keys shine because there is no real competition. Neither one of them has ever had a song that moved me, they’re both Soul Music lite. I seriously doubt that either one would have a record contract if they were not beautiful. Not knocking them but the industry.

Funny enough, I was listening to Nina Simone last night thinking, I wonder if she was trying to come out this day and age would she be signed? Honestly, I don’t think so. It makes me sad that there is most likely so much talent out there and so many powerful voices that we’ll never hear because of the package it comes in.

  12. Jennifer Hudson, Jill Scott, Carrie Underwood, Alicia Keyes,Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Fantasia, Tamia, Nelly Furtado are among the group of divas worthy imho.

  13. It would also be a great surprise to have En Vogue or some classic/legendary group to be the opening act.

  14. Diva’s Live on VH1 to me could be the same if they find real aritst to perform like J Hud, Chrisette Michelle, Tamia, Bee, A. Keyes, Mariah (again), C. Agularia, Mary (again) and some old schooler’s like Clien, Whitney, Patti, even Tina! Didn’t at one time they had diana Ross on there.

I’m all for save the music foundation and I’m all for VH1 to have TRUE artist on there performing. But I hope they don’t have these tiny bopping little tone chicks like Mia. LOVE HER but her voice is not at all in the LEAGUE of the true diva’s!!!!

  15. I agree Real Talk and Tia. That show will never be the same again. The only new comers that I can think of worthy of a spot is Jennifer Hudson (very strong Vocals), Alicia Keys (classically trained pianist, good vocals, good writing skills), and Christina Aguilera (very strong vocals and good writing skills). Beyonce is a big a no simply because she is over hyped and a mediocre singer. There are also a lot of things that are questionable about Beyonce. Number one she steals other people’s material then claims it as her own. Number two she copies other artist all the time. So her originality is questionable. She has also been sued for payola which is paying radio stations to play her music over and over. She has also been sued earlier this year for copyright infringement. Last but not least we can’t forget her famous statement “I wish I was born Latina” now that her Spanish version album has been released. Real Diva’s don’t have to copy, steal, and cheat. I have seen her in concert and let me tell you don’t waste your money. She is an average pretty girl but Diva no way. Let’s leave that to Whitney and Mariah because those women have phenomenal voices and talent. Also by the way please don’t attack me about my post it is only my opinion. I know how people are about Beyoncita no matter how out of order she is or how badly she steps on her own race. Amazing!

  16. STEVE I AGREE OF YOUR OPINION. THE REAL DIVAH’S WERE BACK IN THE 60’S, 70’S, 80’S, AND IN THE EARLY TO MID-90’S. I MEAN IT SEEMS LIKE EVERYBODY IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY TODAY ARE TRYING TOO HARD TO BE ORIGINAL . IT SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BE LIKE THAT. IT’S ONE THING TO COPY, BUT HAVE YOUR OWN ORIGINALITY. MAKE IT BELIEVEABLE.

I LIKE BEYONCE, BUT IT DOES SEEM LIKE EVERYBODY OVER-HYPES HER. (NO HATER)
BUT I REALLY WOULD LOVE TO SEE SOME REAL TALENT, YOU KNOW STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF NOT TRUE TO THE GAME

  17. Is it because this website’s name is brownsista, that’s why you can only talk about black singers. I mean from the begining the Divas live had every race and category no just black so I’m surprised when everybody gives a list of who should be on the next one, that it’s a list of all-black singers. Maybe you’re one of those people who think that only black people can sing. Well, Martina Mcbride, Faith Hill, Leann Rimes, Gloria Estefan, Shania Twain, Carrie Underwood, Celine Dion, just to name a few aren’t black and for the past 3 years, their careers were alive, till now, and they can really sing. Of course there are black singers who should be on that stage too.
For a long time when they talked about divas they talked about Celine, Mariah and Whitney. Now diva means more like a demanding, high maintenance female, in one word a good word for bitch. I mean Omarosa calls herself a diva. Jlo is a diva and now Mariah is a diva too.

  18. Brown Sista seeks to celebrate the beauty, style and accomplishments of African American women in Hollywood

So to answer your question, yes. This website is about sistas.

The title of the website also says: Brown Sista >> Black Female Celebrities.

  19. So a website about sistas only recognize black talents. hmm. So yo are limiting this website to black celebrities.

  20. Beyonce has been on one of the Diva live shows. The one where they paid tribute to Stevie Wonder. She was just becoming a solo artisist, she did the song dangerously in love. I would like to see her on the Diva live show as a student. So that she can see that you don’t have to yell and scream and have all the theatrics when you have a voice.

I would like to see the Diva’s paired up. Like the new with the classics. Maybe Fantasia and Gladys Knight, Mary J Blige and Betty Wright, Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin, and Toni Braxton and Beyonce, Patti LaBelle and Jennifer Hudson and Mariah Carey and Barbara Striesand. I think that would be a reall great show.

To have Ms. Franklin and Ms.Houston singing together would be great. Everyone needs to get over Whitney’s pass and accept her future. She is the voice and that can never be take away. In her worst day there is not one new singer who can say that sounded better than her in their best days.

  21. I have seen the past DIVAS concernt and some the VHI classifies as DIVAs are questionable to me. If we are looking at young DIVAS I say add Heather Headley to the list
