On The Set: Ashanti & Nelly; Body On Me Video
Singer Ashanti and her significant other of the past five years, Nelly, have added their names to the long list of entertainers who have mixed business with pleasure. Think: Beyonce and Jay-Z, Sonny and Cher- Peaches and Herb. The list goes on and on and now that list includes this couple as they were seen recently working on a video together. “Body On Me” is a track slated to appear on Nelly’s upcoming CD and features not only the lady in his life, Ashanti, but singer, songwriter, producer, Akon as well. Body On Me is a pretty nice track and may just be the added boost Ashanti needs. Though her CD got rave review from critics, fans and non fans alike, the disc has moved less than 300,000 copies since it was released five weeks ago and presently sits at #49 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart.

I remember when everybody was riding Ashanti’s coat tail like they are riding Beyonce’s and Rihanna’s now. They even gave her an Aretha Franklin soul train award and a petition was started because people felt that she was only getting the award because of her looks and felt that it should have went to someone more deserving like Mary J. Now Ashanti can’t even sell records anymore and Mary J. is still on top.
I also remember when she and Nellie were trying to deny that they were a couple. Now they want to be seen together as a ploy to boost record sales. It works for some celebrity couples but not all.

The committee chose her for the award because at that point she had 3 singles in the top ten and the first artist to sell 500+ the first week. Can you say that about any R& B artist that’s selling right now, it had nothing to do with her looks. Ashanti looks better now than she did back then. I believe she can still sell records. I think she looks great and sounds better than ever! I wish her all the best.

Why won’t people just admit that it is a new day and artists like Ashanti, Monica, Brandy, Toni Braxton and many others can never and will never again be the talk of the town. Now before the stans come down on me let me say that I don’t think it is because they are no longer talented but because radio and the public have moved on to the new people like Ciara, Rihanna, Beyonce and Alicia Keys. Brandy’s fan base was never that strong, Monica’s fan base was even weaker and the same goes for Ashanti who was just a flash in the pan. She had her time and now it is up because radio radio has spoken and radio makes the hits. No need top worry though cause five years from now Rihanna and more than likely Ciara too, will be right where Ashanti is; struggling to make a comeback in an industry that no longer cares about you.
