I think it is safe to assume that when Dreamgirls was first released Beyonce thought the movie would bring her the validation as an actress she so desperately craved. Unfortunately, her performance was panned and Jennifer Hudson walked away with the accolades and the Oscar. Never one to stay down for long, Beyonce flung herself back into her music, recording a whole new album, 8 new videos and launching a world tour. Many assumed Bey had taken the hint and would stay out of the acting world and instead focus on her true gift- music.

For Robyn Rihanna Fenty, it seems as if it were just the other day when she was strolling about, barefoot, in her family’s backyard in St. Michael, Barbados. But a quick tally of her recent successes—the debut single “Pon De Replay,” the most downloaded song of 2005; her debut gold album, Music of the Sun; the platinum follow-up, A Girl Like Me with the hit “SOS”-reveals that it has actually been two and a half years since Rihanna has enjoyed the easy pace of island life. She hasn’t slowed down since February 2005, when she auditioned for and signed with Def Jam Recordings.

A new track from Keyshia Cole titled Let It Go has hit the net and is reportedly due to be featured on her upcoming sophomore album. The single, produced by Missy Elliott, features both her and Lil Kim as well as a sample of the 1980’s classic Juicy. Because Keyshia Cole is the 21st century version of Mary J. Blige, you can expect this single to become an immediate hit. Keyshia’s fans have been waiting for a hot new single from her and I think they finally have it. Click here to listen for yourself.
If you have been reading then site for any length of time, then you know that I am a huge fan of r&b music from the early 90’s. Groups like SWV, Brownstone, En Vogue and Jade were all a part of my upbringing and anytime I hear their music I am automatically taken back to a time most of us fondly remember- high school. Back in the early 90’s female r&b groups totally ruled the planet and what a beautiful planet it was. One of my favorite groups was Jade, and just like En Vogue, Jade was an all girl group comprised of nothing but lead singers. Each girl was beautiful and could totally hold her own on the mic. Unfortunately, also like En Vogue, they had a very short run in the music business (less than 10 years) and would eventually be replaced with the likes of 702 and the even yuckier 3LW.

Janet is currently in the UK and attended the launch of an exclusive perfume at the Dorchester Hotel in Mayfair, London on Friday evening. Janet, accompanied by her boyfriend Jermaine Dupri, arrived in a white ball gown. The perfume is reported to cost thousands of pounds per bottle. The event organizers went to the trouble of hiring a group of general photographers to snap Janet as she arrived but they were made to sign a disclaimer saying they would not sell any images. One of Janet’s fansites however got their hands on a few and you can check them out below. After the event, Janet returned to her hotel in Mayfair where she changed and went clubbing until the early hours of the morning. It is not known whether Janet will attend any more events whilst in London or how long she plans to stay.

After viewing photos of Rihanna’s last few performance I can see a style for the promotion of her new album emerging. For anyone who has watched artists like Janet Jackson and Madonna transform themselves for every new CD, you know what I am talking about. Rihanna’s first two albums didn’t see much, if any change in her look and personal style. However, one look at her most recent performances shows someone obviously trying to create a new signature look for themselves. Now I don’t know exactly what style Rihanna is going for as she looks a cross between 1980’s Madonna and Pat Benatar. But I give the sista credit for trying to break out of the big blonde weave mold that so many other female artists have fallen prey to. Take a look for yourselves and let me know what you think. Personally, I am loving it !

When it comes to films in general, there are never enough roles for women on the screen, let enough leading roles, or roles for African American women, but so far this year, we have seen a good share of prominent roles go to Black women. While Halle Berry is the only one to have a leading role in “Perfect Stranger”, some supporting roles were given with Meagan Good in “Stomp The Yard”, Thandie Newton in “Norbit”, Gabrielle Union in “Daddy’s Little Girls”, S. Epatha Merkerson in “Black Snake Moan”, Kimberly Elise in “Pride”, Jada Pinkett Smith in “Reign Over Me”, Nia Long in “Are We Done Yet?”, Tracie Thoms and Sydney Tamaii Poitier in “Grindhouse”, Vivica A. Fox in “The Salon”, and Victoria Rowell in “Home of the Brave”.

Singer Amerie spent the weekend promoting her new album, Because I Love It, in Tokyo Japan. Amerie’s long-awaited third album will be released there this week and was released in the U.K last week. Unlike the U.S, Amerie has quite a following overseas which explains why her albums are always released over there first. American Amerie fans however will have to wait a lil bit longer to get their hands on her new CD as an American release date still has not been set. You can however listen and download several of the tracks from the album by visiting Amerie’s Official UK Site .
