With all the Superbowl hoopla going on I almost forgot that Fashion Week in New York City’s Bryany Park was in full swing. Every February designer’s from around the globe converge on the city to showcase their fall fashion collections. One of the most popular showings is Kimora Lee Simmons’ Baby Phat line, which is alaways heavily attended by celebrity sistas. This year was no different as Tyra Banks, Vivica Fox, and Amerie were just a few of the ladies who showed up to see what Baby Phat had to offer for the Fall of 2008.

Fashion icon (yes she is worthy of that title) Rihanna did her part to help fight the spread of AIDS by showing up at H&M to sign copies of her “Believe” t-shirt. Rihanna teamed up with trendy store to launch the “Fashion Against AIDS” collection, which will feature t-shirts for guys and girls, with slogans like “Stop and “Think” and “Believe”. The new line will be available in H&M’s Divided departments starting February 2008 and prices are expected to range from $12 to $34, with 25 percent of the sales from the collection going to HIV/AIDS-prevention projects around the world.

During the Super Bowl XLll press conference today Alicia Keys revealed that not only is she joining the performance line-up for the big football event, but will also be heading out on the road for her “As I Am” Tour- which will be sponsored by Lexus. The tour will build upon the success of Alicia’s latest CD which has already sold- get this- over 3 million copies since it was released back in November. The tour will kick off in Europe on February 25th and make stops in Paris, Milan and Zurich. The U.S. and Canadian parts of the tour kick off on April 19th in Hampton, Virginia and continue throughout the early summer. Alicia’s “As I Am” tour will visually step it up a notch as the singer has called upon iconic designer Giorgio Armani to create a custom wardrobe for the her, which I suspect will rival that of the great Cher, Tina Turner and Janet Jackson. Look for Alicia in the meantime to perform at the SUPER BOWL XLII PREGAME SHOW at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona, which will air live on Fox, Sunday, February 3rd.

Just as they are dressed in this new publicity shot, Salt-N-Pepa are becoming the ‘Laverne & Shirley’ of hip-hop. The Grammy Award winning hip-hop duo have bounced back onto the scene with their VH1 reality series ‘The Salt-N-Pepa Show,’ which returns on Feb. 11 for a new batch of shows. According to a network rep, this go round Cheryl James (Salt) taps Sandy Denton (Pepa) to help her 16-year old daughter Corin, plan her first co-ed house party. As Sandy’s party plans grow more and more lavish and elaborate, Cheryl starts to wonder if she made the right choice! This is just the first show. Upcoming episodes will include their former dee-jay Spinderella inviting them to join her at a DJ gig in Atlantic City Salt N’ Pepa seeking the help of professional life coach, Iyanla Vanzant with their communication problems Confronting their future as Pepa wants to know, “What’s next for us?” and attempts to write a new song as they cope with family interruptions, writers’ block, and each other.
Keyshia Cole latest CD, “Just Like You”, hasn’t been out for six months and yet the singer says her record label; Geffen, is already pressuring her to have a new album ready for the Christmas season. This is bad news as far as I am concerned because in my opinion artists need time to rest and rejuvenate so they can live a little and come back with fresh and new ideas. Throwing albums together in a couple of months may work for fluffy pop acts but I believe Keyshia’s fans want more than a bunch songs thrown together for the sake of appeasing the record label. They want Keyshia herself. They want Keyshia to come back singing about her life, her pains and her experiences. In other words, they don’t want “Umbrella” from Keyshia. They want some real soul.

As the release date for Janet Jackson’s new “Discipline” CD gets closer and closer more and more promo shots from the CD begin to surface and above we have three new ones to share with you all. In the past I have not always been particularly fond of Janet’s promo shots but this era so far is shaping up quite nicely. Janet is looking beautiful and most of all natural in these new shots, which I believe were more than likely photographed by Mark Liddell, who also photographed Janet for Rolling Stone and Prestige Magazine.
