Beverly Johnson Posed

Model Beverly Johnson has officially come out against actor Bill Cosby, claiming the actor/comedian drugged her back in the 80’s as well.

Johnson, the first African American model to appear on the cover of American Vogue in 1974 and the French cover of Elle the following year, says Cosby drugged her when she went to his home to audition for a role on the Cosby Show.

Beverly says she immediately knew she had been drugged and cursed Cosby out so viciously he eventually dragged her out of his house and threw her in a cab.

Where Have All the Real Men Gone?

Coverboys and Crying Men

Every revolution has its downside… just ask Marie Antoinette! The metrosexual insurgency meant that men NOW had two eyebrows and jeans that fit. Unfortunately, to me, some guys took the metro look a little too far, leaving women to deal with the over-groomed man with skinny jeans. Women are tired of boyfriends raiding their beauty drawer and using their Lady Schick razor. Ladies, if you’re sick of all the over-grooming that men are doing, please raise your hands. If you’re sick of all the men who pluck and shape their eyebrows and in fact, will nudge you in haste to get the last moisturizer at the Clinique counter… lets hear your searing wail!!! I’m so tired of some random guy sitting next to me in the pedicure chair. The manicure salon is a woman’s sanctuary from the day-to-day. Most woman don’t have a woman cave of which to retreat to decompress. All this metrosexual stuff has become annoying and has gone too far, and I’m blaming this on all the makeover reality shows, plastic surgery shows, Snoop Dogg, Ice T and the Southern pimps with curlers in their hair.

What ever happened to real male machismo? Men should get back to having real cojones and stop all this nonsense. I prefer a manly man. Because if I see another African-American or Latino brother with pigtails, bouncing, permed, candy curls like Shirley Temple or afro puffs like Pam Grier, I don’t know what I’ll do. I’ve identified a few of the most egregious over-grooming offenses some men are guilty of committing:

  • Does he shave his chest? Tell your boyfriend, husband… that men aren’t lizards… you have hair! Most women don’t want to cuddle up to a hairless reptilian man and even fewer will snuggle up to a cactus, which is exactly how it feels when their hair starts to grow back. Remind your man that the sexiest men… Wolverine, Don Draper, the Dothraki king from, “Game of Thrones” are far from hairless. But if he does insist on landscaping his chest, he should get it waxed for a smoother, un-razor bumpy result.
  • He doesn’t want you to touch his hair. Does he duck and dodge you? Next time he emerges from the shower, give him a head massage. Do this a few times and he’ll associate touchable hair with touching you. And replace his industrial strength hair hardening shellac with softer products.
  • Are his eyebrows overly coiffed? Okay, you can’t blame him. Men are confused when it comes to eyebrows. We hound them about unibrows, but they could end up looking too well-groomed if they spend too much time in front of the mirror with tweezers. Make sure he’s only grooming the underside of his brows and leave the natural top arch alone. The hottest guys aren’t necessarily the most picture-perfect.
  • Does he wear too much clear top-coat on his manicured nails? There’s nothing wrong with well kept and groomed fingernails, however he should forgo the clear top coat to avoid that pimping look. Another recent trend some men are doing is french manicures. To me that pushes the boundaries of what’s acceptable, in addition to darker colors and nail art, especially if their nails are a bit on the long side. Tell your man you prefer that his fingernails to be neat and clean and buffed to a natural shine. All that other stuff isn’t necessary… leave it for the real pimps.

Another Quickie Relationship Ends in Tragedy

Sistas, this is a very sad story, but one that neesd to open up our eyes to the danger of rushing into relationships instead of taking the time to get to really know someone. We keep hearing stories of black women becoming involved with men they barely even know and the outcomes have repeatedly been tragic. Just two weeks ago we read about Nimeha Milien, the woman who was carjacked by Donald McGee, the man she was on a first date with. Now this tragic story, another case of barely knowing a man and he does something awful to the woman:

After a 37-hour standoff, police in Trenton, N.J. shot and killed registered sex offender Gerald “Skip” Tyrone Murphy, 38, on Sunday May 12, 2013, after he held his girlfriend’s three children hostage for three days.

Murphy killed 44-year-old Carmelita Stevens, the children’s mother, and her 13-year-old son. Police found their bodies in separate bedrooms. According to an article on, Stevens’ body was in an advanced state of decomposition leading police to believe she and her son could have been killed two weeks ago.

Murphy, who wasn’t the father of any of her children, and Stevens had only been dating for a few months, yet both lived in the house where this all took place.

According to the article, a relative of Stevens’ called police worried after she hadn’t talked to her in weeks. Police then learned her children hadn’t been to school in 12 days, which led them to the home.

The three-day standoff began at 3:00pm Friday afternoon and didn’t end until around 3:45am Sunday. Friday, according to the article, police smelled an odor consistent with a decomposing body after entering into the home through a rear door. They also said maggots were throughout the residence.

Police found Murphy in an upstairs 10-foot-by-11-foot bedroom, but had to back off when he told them he was armed with a gun and explosives and had three children with him: two teen girls and a 4-year-old boy.

The story said the officers noticed one of the dead victims before retreating from the second floor and rescuing Stevens’ 19-year-old son from the basement. Her son told them he hadn’t seen his mother or his siblings since about April 24.
Police kept in contact with Murphy throughout the standoff, passing food into the home through an upstairs window, the article said.

On Sunday, police re-entered the home where an officer shot Murphy because, the police said, he was threatening one of the children. Murphy had also assaulted and abused the children.

Sistas, the story went on to say Murphy had a long criminal history:

    • convictions for aggravated assault and criminal conspiracy
    • arrested for robbery and weapons offenses and child endangerment
    • warrant out for his arrest for failing to register as a sex offender in Pennsylvania

Ladies, we must do a better job of being selective about the men we bring into our lives, and especially around our children. This is an awful and unfortunate story, but hopefully it will serve as a “wake up” call for black women. I don’t know Carmelita’s story, but let’s stop picking up any and every random guy (or ones we hardly know) just to say we have one. It’ not worth it.

    Ciara’s Bathroom ‘Body Party’

Ciara is set to unveil the full length version of her single ‘Body Party’ later today via Billboard’s official website. The track will go online live at 12pm EST and is being billed as the official lead-off single from the singer’s upcoming fifth studio album ‘One Woman Army,’ due out later this year in June.

While you wait for the full song to drop, Ciara has decided to grace the public with a short a cappella version taped in her bathroom.

Give it a listen below and let us know what you think.

Update: Here is the full version, unveiled just moments ago.

Ciara also reveals that she co-wrote the song with her new main squeeze, rapper Future and that the song “definitely comes from a sincere place.”

“He’s such an amazing, creative person,” Ciara told Billboard. “I can be very creatively expressive myself, but there’s nothing like being able to work with someone that can bring a new flavor. What I like about working with him, it’s almost like I got to learn more things about myself.”

Look for ‘One Woman Army’ to feature production from Rodney Jerkins and collaborations with Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross.

Kelly Rowland on the Set of Her New Show

Kelly Rowland’s plate is fixin’ to be pretty full for the rest of 2012 and probably for most of 2013. Besides a new album to finish up and promote, Kelly has also taken on the role of television actress and will be starring in her own BET comedy series ‘What Would Dylan Do?’

Kelly was spotted on the set of her new show today, reportedly taping the pilot episode. As previously reported, Kelly will star as Dylan, a struggling relationship blogger who moves to L.A. hoping to find success in both her personal and professional life.

Gabrielle Dennis (The Game) and Melanie Liburd will also be joining the cast, playing Kelly’s (Dylan) best friend and roommate.

‘What Would Dylan Do?’ will be joining Gabrielle Union’s ‘Being Mary Jane’ on BET next year, for what the network hopes will be a stellar Tuesday night line-up of shows aimed at black women.

Esther Baxter, You Should Have Known Better

While browsing Twitter today I came across the story of rapper Joe Budden and video model Esther Baxter. For those of you who may be learning about this couple for the first time just as I am, I will take a moment to fill you in.

The couple, who once dated and were expecting a child together, had a physical altercation that resulted in Budden being arrested (Esther eventually dropped the charges) and Baxter losing the child (a girl) she was carrying. Joe went on to record a song about the incident and post details about their relationship via Twitter, thus pushing Esther to respond by giving Bossip an interview in which she claims Joe’s abuse caused her to miscarry. You can watch the interview and view some very disturbing images of Esther’s bruises, as well as images of what is said to be the deceased fetus here.

Listening to Esther tell her tale of abuse and mistreatment at the hands of Budden truly saddened me. However, I could not help but wonder why Baxter didn’t kinda see some of this coming. Budden has been extremely public when it comes to his relationships with women. From Dominican model Tahiry to El Salvadorian rapper/singer/reality star Somaya Reece, Budden has made videos with many of his conquests and then turned on them viciously when the relationship went sour, often posting private images and disparaging their charater online.

Both Tahiry and Reece were involved with Joe before Esther and so surely she knew his reputation and was aware of the many videotapes he posted online about his private affairs. So my question is this- did Esther really think Joe would treat her any differently than he treated the other women he had been involved with?

As far back as February of 2010 Tahiry had accused Joe of beating her so badly she had to be hospitalized. Likewise, Somaya, who once clowned Tahiry, eventually claimed she too was abused by the D-List rapper. According to Reece “He [Joe] is like verbally and mentally abusive, like real bad.”

Now don’t misunderstand me. I don’t blame Baxter for the abuse she suffered. But I do blame her for not knowing better. All this man was he had shown to the world. He hid nothing. He was someone who had no problem airing his personal business, as well as that of the women he was involved with. He was scum. He didn’t say he was scum, but he damn sure showed it and when someone shows you who they are, you should believe them.

But most of all, why didn’t Baxter, at 27, know the golden rule: If you want to know how a man is going to treat you, you need only look at the women in his PAST, to see your FUTURE.
