Tika Sumpter’s New Role Irks Fans

Actress Tika Sumpter is the latest thespian to come to the defense of Tyler Perry. Tyler is behind the OWN channel’s latest hit show ‘The Haves and Have Nots, which Tika co-stars in.

Since its premiere, the nighttime serial has come under fire for its depiction of black women, particularly Tika’s character Candace Young, who is a lady of the night, so to speak.

In a recent interview, Tika defended Perry’s depiction of black women on the Haves and Have Nots, and dismissed the recent online petition to have the show removed from OWN’s line-up.

Excerpts from the interview are below.

Tika on her character [Candace Young] being a single mother and prostitute: “The thing I love about Candace is she’s really trying – even though she doesn’t go about it the right way– she’s really trying to do it for herself. She’s not relying on a dude to pull her out of the gutter. She’s using the opportunities she’s getting, definitely, but she’s not leaning on him as a crutch and I love that. She’s standing on her own two feet. Whether she’s fighting dirty, she’s fighting for her life, for her career, she’s standing on her own.”

Tika on the lack of morals shown by her character: “What is morality? What’s the barometer? Who’s saying this is moral and this is not? Are you talking to a pastor or are you talking to a teenager? It depends on whom you’re talking to and what is the measure… Candace is totally comfortable using her body. The body is a temple to some people, but to her it’s a tool.”

Tika on the petition to have the show removed from OWN’s line-up: “You have the right to simply turn the channel. “

Tika on her unwavering support for Tyler Perry: “He empowers people every day by employing over 400 people in his studio. He’s the only black man with a studio; I’m talking about a studio lot…He’s come from no connection in this business to where he is now, a mogul. And if Oprah believes in him, that’s a great thing. She wouldn’t surround herself with people who are not enlightened and not smart.”

Tika on the new opportunities being afforded to black actresses thanks to the success of Scandal: “People want to see women of color, smart women, feisty women, whatever. They want to see these women, and they don’t want to have only one option. Whether it’s brown or Chinese, white. There doesn’t have to just be one type of person on TV; there needs to be a variation, and I think that’s what Olivia Pope did – or Kerry did – for us.”

Tika can next be seen in Tyler Perry’s ‘A Madea Christmas,’ as well as ‘Ride Along,’ ‘My Man is a Loser’ and next year’s full season debut of ‘Being Mary Jane.’

Tika Sumpter is Coming to OWN

Did you guys know actress Tika Sumpter will be starring in one of Tyler Perry’s new shows for the Oprah Winfrey Network? If you didn’t that makes two of us, because I only found out a few days ago while watching a repeat episode of ‘Iyanla Fix My Life.’

Tike will be starring in ‘The Haves and the Have Nots,’ an hour-long soap opera style drama loosely based on Tyler Perry’s film ‘The Family That Preys.’

Tika’s character of Candace Young is described as “a manipulative opportunist who will stop at nothing to get what she wants.’ The official OWN website for ‘The Haves and the Have Nots’ also reveals a secret about Candace they say fans should know before the season kicks off- Candace is sleeping with the patriarch of the wealthy family who employs her mother as a maid. With this knowledge in tow Candace is apparently set to “score the opportunity of a lifetime.”

The show is set to debut on May 28th with a 2-hour 2-night premiere and features an ensemble cast that includes Angela Robinson and veteran actress Crystal Fox.

Peep a just released clip below.

Set in Savannah, Georgia, Jim and Katheryn Cryer, a wealthy couple, become intimately involved with the families of their hired help, creating a web of controversy as the worlds of “The Haves” and “The Have Nots” collide.

Cover Story: Tika Sumpter Rolls Out

Actress Tika Sumpter is looking extra sumptuous on the cover of Rolling Out Magazine. The 32 year old former “Gossip Girl” actress is making her most high profile big screen debut to date, appearing in the remake of the 1976 classic film “Sparkle,” set to hit movie theaters this Friday, August 17th.

Tika plays the role of Delores Williams, a part she says was beefed up by writer Mara Brock Akil. Whereas the original character of Delores in the 1976 film seem to be little more than an afterthought, Tika says her Delores will have an expanded role that will shock fans of the original.

Also on Tika’s plate is her upcoming co-starring role alongside Gabrielle Union in the upcoming BET original series “Being Mary Jane.”

The show’s pilot will air this fall, with the first season set to debut in January of 2013.

Tika Sumpter Joins ‘Mary Jane’ Cast

Now here is some news I am actually excited about.

While unveiling their fall line-up, which includes shows starring Gabrielle Union, Larenz Tate and others, BET revealed news that former “The Game” actress, Tika Sumpter, will be jumping ship and appearing on their new hour-long drama “Being Mary Jane.”

BET didn’t go into much detail about Tika’s character, but word has it she will play another one of Mary Jane’s (Gabrielle Union) best friends.

Tika now rounds out a cast that includes LaTarsha Rose, Omari Hardwick, Richard Roundtree and Aaron D. Spears.

Tika Sumpter Joins ‘Sparkle’ Cast

Actresses Tika Sumpter and Carmen Ejogo are the latest names to be announced as stars of the upcoming ‘Sparkle’ remake by Salim and Mara Brock Akil.

Carmen, probably best known for her role as Alean in the HBO original movie Lackawanna Blues, will play the role of Sista, while Tika will take on the role of Delores.

Cee-Lo Green will play a singer who serves as the girl’s opening act.

The part of Stix Warren will be played by actor Derek Luke, with Jordin Sparks playing the role of Sparkle and Whitney Houston rounding out the cast as the girl’s mother.

Editor’s Note: Though I’m not fond of Derek Luke as Stix, the addition of Sumpter as Delores and Ejogo as Sista, is nothing short of brilliant.

Ejogo, wife of actor Jeffrey Wright, was amazing in Lackawanna Blues and is an excellent choice to play the role of Sista. Kudos to the Akils for bringing her on.

As for Sumpter, she is on fire due to her roles on ‘Gossip Girl’ and ‘The Game.’ No doubt ‘Sparkle’ will up her profile even more. FYI: I have gotten a peek at the script and it is a complete re-write. The Delores Sumpter will play is nothing like the one in the original.
